Development in the last 50 Years 1961: Founding of the Ruhr University (opened in 1965) 1968: Opening of the University of Dortmund 1972: Duisburg and Essen formed as a new type of a university, merger of both in 2003 Since the 1970`s a lot of Universities of Applied Sciences were founded today there are in the region: 6 Universities 15 Universities of Applied Sciences 3 Max Planck Institutes 4 Fraunhofer Institutes 4 Leibniz Research Centers Making the Ruhrgebiet one of the premier scientific hubs in Europe (140.000 students) 4
