The job outlook is looking brighter, especially for those high school graduates who are leaving Pioneer with a specific skill. Thanksgiving Break Winter Break, No School PERFECT ATTENDANCE Sixteen seniors were recognized at the Pioneer Honor s Night in May for having two years of perfect attendance. Employers in the area are looking for students who not only have skills in a trade but who also have the necessary soft skills, such as reliability in showing up to work, said Glenna Cannon, Pioneer Superintendent. Maintaining perfect attendance for two consecutive years in high school is a step in the right direction. Their photo is also displayed in the Student of the Month display case by the Welcome Center at Pioneer. MAY Tyler Kegley, Sr., Shelby/Welding, is the SkillsUSA treasurer for Welding as well as a very active student in the community. Kegley donates clothing to those in need, supports the Red Cross by donating blood and participates in trash clean-up days around Shelby. My experience at Pioneer has been very positive, said Kegley. I ve made tons of new friends, learned all different welds and, thanks to Pioneer, I have an understanding of what my future holds. MAY Tyler Niederkohr, Jr., Wynford/Welding is active in FFA, helping with the annual fruit sales. Niederkohr also serves as an animal helper at the Crawford County Fair and helps in the concession stand at Wynford games. He is part of the youth group at the Nazarene Church in Bucyrus. Pioneer was the best choice I have ever made, said Niederkohr. I ve always enjoyed welding, and Pioneer has helped me continue what I love. I think Pioneer has set me apart from others in my welding career.

RELEASE OF STUDENT INFORMATION It is important that students and parents understand Pioneer s policy on the release of student information. Pioneer s Student Directory contains a student s name, physical address and telephone number. This information will be released to various third parties such as employers, colleges, military recruiters, and agencies. Parents may opt out of Pioneer providing this information to third parties but, in doing so, this information will also not be released to any colleges or employers. Based on the law, if you have NOT opted out of the release of your child s Student Directory information it will be released to all third parties, including military recruiters. TEACHERS OF THE YEAR Congratulations to our 2012-13 Pioneer Teachers of the Year: Melinda Shaum, Facilities Services Instructor, and Dan Burtscher, Math Instructor. The two were chosen from a pool of 10 nominees. Shaum and Burtscher will receive Pioneer s Golden Bell Award for being named Teachers of the Year, along with a $500 cash stipend. The other Teachers of the Year nominees will receive a small congratulatory gift as well. Shaum earned her Bachelors degree from Ohio State University and her Masters degree from Ashland University. She has been employed at Pioneer as the Facilities Services Instructor since August, 1997. Burtscher attended Grove City College from 1987 to 1989, majoring in Secondary Math. He then graduated from Kent State University in 1992 with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics Education. Burtscher has been employed at Pioneer as a Mathematics Instructor and Success Center Coordinator since August, 2004.
