Mission & Impact Statements Mission To recognize and preserve the history and legacy of all forms of gospel music and to provide educational resources that encourage participation and appreciation by the general public. Background The Gospel Music Association (GMA) was founded in 1964 by leading southern gospel music industry executives for the purpose of promoting, encouraging, supporting and developing gospel, religious, and sacred music. The group of four men and one woman who formed the GMA in 1964 did so out of a concern for a fragmented industry badly in need of cohesion. James Blackwood, J.D. Sumner, Cecil Blackwood, Dorothy Pate, and Donald W. Butler, Sr. intended the GMA to be a centralized resource center where those interested in the gospel music industry could obtain information about, among other things, artists, record companies and publishers. According to the official Charter of Incorporation, this group of southern gospel music industry executives formed the organization "For the purpose of the promotion of music generally, and the promoting, encouraging, supporting, developing, and dissemination of gospel, religious, spiritual and sacred music, and to approve, encourage, and endorse gospel music, conventions, concerts, programs, recordings, sheet music, hymnals, orchestration, arrangements, television and radio shows and productions, and other means of bringing gospel music before the public. Originally established as a 501c(3) public benefit organization, over the years the GMA began to operate more like a mutual benefit trade organization. In 2003, the GMA Board of Directors decided to separate the public benefit activities from the mutual benefit activities by forming a new organization. The result is that the GMA Trade Organization and the GMA Foundation have differing missions and each is governed by its own Board of Directors, although operated by the same staff. Hymns have connected generations while also giving us a pathway to praise our Creator. Spirituals have done the same with the added benefit of encouraging one another to press on through trials. In modern times, radio has created an outlet to share new "Gospel" music in many current formats--rock, jazz, inspirational, urban, R & B, etc., giving rise to an "industry" that has helped get this music out to the masses. It is this "industry" that the Gospel Music Association (GMA) was created to serve. Like most trade organizations, the GMA was put together by industry leaders who wanted to build a sense of community among the ranks of those behind the scenes and on the stages of the world. This community has created opportunity for all facets of the industry to come together to learn from one another; to discuss and debate methods and ideas; and to educate ourselves on how do to things better and smarter. For 50 years (since it's founding in 1964) the GMA has been the "go to" trade organization for relationships and education and recognition of excellence. While no one involved in Gospel Music does it for the money or recognition, it is gratifying to know that excellence is recognized through GMA's Dove Awards and Gospel Music Hall of Fame. The music industry that GMA,Inc. represents has been hit by the recession and a decrease in records sales due to online technology and peer to peer music sharing. It became evident that the GMA, needed to increase it's revelence and find ways to serve and support our creative community. By developing stretegic alliances with other organizations and institutions such as universities with simular missions, we have been able to stabilize 3
our events and offer opportunities. For example our partnership with Lipscomb University has proved to be mutually benificial. Lipscomb has taken GMA in residence, providing office space on their property and allowa us the use of their arena and other settings on campus. In turn we bring our industry leaders and events to the Lipscomb campus and offer students internships and opportunities to have hands on experience at our events and productions. Charles Dorris, Chairman of the Board CEO Statement The Gospel Music Association serves as the face and voice for the Christian/Gospel music community and is dedicated to exposing, promoting and celebrating the gospel through music of all styles including pop, rock, praise & worship, black gospel, R&B, hip hop, southern gospel, country, and more. The GMA community is multi-cultural and multi generational, and includes agents, artists, church leaders, managers, promoters, radio personnel, record company executives, retailers, songwriters and other industry visionaries. The GMA focuses its efforts on a past, present and future model. Through the GMA Foundation and the GMA Gospel Music Hall of Fame/GMA Honors we aim to preserve the legacies (past) of those that have blazed the trail for Gospel music. Through the GMA Dove Awards we seek to support and bring awareness to the best and brightest in the current (present) Christian and Gospel music industry. We focus on the future through our training event, IMMERSE, which seeks to develop up-and-coming artists, songwriters and music business professionals. This was our first event so we have no measurments to track other than our overhead was covered and we raised $30,000.00. Examples of Program Success Strong attendence. We had over 550 for a sitdown dinner on our first event. The event paid for itself and raised over $30,000.00 for GMA, Inc. CEO Comments Most of our events have been around for a long time so our challenge, recently, has been how to keep them fresh and relevant. We ve spent the last 3-5 years restructuring, tinkering and experimenting with how to do this and I think this will continue to be our challenge. How do we maintain relevance and continue to grow each to reach its maximum potential. 6

Most of the challenges that the organization faces result from a lack of resources. We currently address this lack by filling needs with contract/part-time staff that have the potential to grow into full-time as timing permits. This structure allows for slow but sustainable growth and also allows our team to adjust to new members over time. 10

For years, the GMA Foundation has been supported by the revenue from its various events. For the long-term health of the organization we need to offer the opportunity for donors and grants to partner with us to create an even greater impact in our communities with the arts. We have just started the process of making this opportunity available and pursuing interested parties. 12
