Keynote Presenters Las Vegas Strip Shooting and its Effect on Schools, Students and Staff On the night of October 1, 2017, a gunman opened fire on a crowd of 22,000 concertgoers at the Route 91 Harvest music festival on the Las Vegas Strip in Nevada, leaving 58 people dead and 546 injured. The shooter fired hundreds of rifle rounds from his suite on the 32nd floor of the nearby Mandalay Bay hotel. The incident is the deadliest mass shooting committed by an individual in the United States. The Clark County School District, the fifth-largest school district in the nation with 320,000 students and 41,000 employees, will present on lessons learned from form this tragedy. This emotional general session presented by members of the Clark County School District Police Department, administration, and counseling staff will provides a detailed overview of not only the District Police Department s incident response; but also the District s recovery role in the aftermath of the tragedy not only for students and staff but the community as a whole. Dr. Marissa Randazzo Dr. Randazzo served for ten years with the U.S. Secret Service, most recently as the agency's Chief Research Psychologist. Among her various responsibilities, she co-directed the Safe School Initiative, the landmark federal study of school shootings that was conducted jointly by the U.S. Secret Service and U.S. Department of Education. Dr. Randazzo is an accomplished presenter and instructor on threat assessment investigations, having trained over 10,000 professionals in law enforcement, management, administration, mental health, and the intelligence community throughout the United States, Canada, and the European Union. Dr. Randazzo has testified before Congress and has been interviewed by major television, radio, and print news outlets, including 60 Minutes, the Today Show, 48 Hours, Dateline NBC, MSNBC, the New York Times, and National Public Radio. She has published numerous articles on threat assessment and violence prevention and currently serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Threat Assessment. She has also published under her maiden name, Marisa Reddy. Dr. Randazzo received a Ph.D. and Master s degree from Princeton University in Social Psychology, and a B.A. in Psychology and Religion from Williams College. In 2005, Dr. Randazzo was named by Williams College as a Bicentennial Medalist for her work in preventing violence. Dr. Steven W. Edwards, President Edwards Educational Services At-risk Youth and School Violence "Understanding the Connection" A leader nationally recognized by USA Today for his innovative approach to education, Dr. Edwards successfully implemented numerous programs to improve student performance during his sixteen-year tenure as a school administrator. Dr. Edwards also has been instrumental in helping countless school districts tailor similar programs with positive, far-reaching results. In addition, Dr. Edwards is an internationally recognized keynote speaker; facilitator and trainer regularly featured as a content expert on television and radio with appearances on CNN on topics such as 21st Century teaching and learning, school climate and educational reform for a globalized world.
