(Revised 3/31/15) THE HOWARD UNIVERSITY ALUMNI CLUB OF NJ SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION THE HUACNJ Scholarship Fund Deadline: June 1, 2015 The Howard University Alumni Club of New Jersey Scholarship Fund was established for the purpose of providing financial support through scholarships for New Jersey Howard University bound undergraduate students who demonstrate financial need and meet academic requirements. In addition, a Scholarship Award Ceremony is planned annually to award scholarships to deserving to incoming Howard University students in the Fall semester of that current year. The fund is administered by the following guidelines: 1. Only new accepted and registered Howard University students with all parts of a completed application received by the stated deadline will be considered. 2. A non-renewable scholarship (Amount to be determined annually) will be granted to an undergraduate student to be used during the Fall and/or Spring semester of 2015. 3. Financial Need is a priority in the selection process. Students must have a completed Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on file with the Howard University Office of Financial Aid and Student Employment indicating eligibility and approval for federal and/or other financial assistance. 4. The applicant must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0. Also the applicant must be in good standing with the University at the time the application is submitted and when the scholarship is awarded. 5. Letter of Recommendation (2) Two letters of recommendation are required from individuals who are familiar with your educational, professional and service background. (Please note recommendation may NOT come from relatives. Appropriate references include teachers, professors, community and social service professionals, religious leaders, supervisors, etc.). Letters of recommendations should be either placed in a sealed envelope with the recommender s signature across the seal and included in your application package or sent directly to the HUACNJ Scholarship Committee in the same manner for receipt by the deadline date. 6. Each applicant will be called to schedule an interview. If there are circumstances that require a special interview time, please describe where noted on the application. 7. All completed applications and materials must be received by Monday, June 1, 2015. CRITERIA FOR THE APPLICANT The applicant must be a first year student that is enrolled full time in Howard University in the Fall of 2015. Each applicant will be screened, evaluated and judged holistically by the Scholarship Committee in complete confidence and used with the utmost discretion. Set criteria of categories shall be established with a rated point system of 1(Poor), (2) Satisfactory, (3) Average, (4) Good and (5) Excellent rating will be used when evaluating the applications. The person with the most points based on the set criteria will be recommended for scholarships which is based on the available funding. Applicants will be judged on the neatness, promptness of response and completeness of their submission. This includes the fulfillment of requests for (a) the latest available transcript, (b) a complete essay, (c) financial information, e.g. tuition, room and board costs, other scholarship information, etc., (d) a interview with one of the HUACNJ Scholarship Committee members and (e) Copy of the Acceptance Letter from Howard University. With the available funding as of 6/1/15, the Scholarship Committee may recommend to give fewer, but more meaningful awards to those who demonstrate serious interest and academic success. After the receipt of the Application and transcript, the Committee will review all applications and each person will be notified by phone to schedule and confirm his/her interview. If a person should have difficulty and can not schedule their interview at the appointed time or have any questions relating to the Scholarship application and/or its process, it is the individual s responsibility to contact HUACNJ President, William M. It is incumbent of the applicant to gather the information and submit the application in a timely manner to the Scholarship Committee for their review. Each applicant shall review the checklist and sign off that the application is complete. NO APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED ATER THE DEADLINE. The awards ceremony will be held on Saturday, July 25, 2015 (The time and location TBD and all parties will be notified by a mailed invitation). All monies awarded for scholarships will be forward to the Howard University Department of Alumni Relations which will be submitted into the awardees student s account for either the Fall or Spring of 2015/2016. The Scholarship Committee will designate the time of the distribution of the funding for the students. The preferred method will be to fill out the application online for ease of expeditiously reviewing the applications but applicants can mail the applications to the noted HUACNJ address as well.
