They were overjoyed at seeing the star, and on entering the house they saw the child with Mary his mother. They prostrated themselves and did him homage. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. MT 2:9-11 January 7, 2018 Feast of the Epiphany of the Lord

January 7, 2018 Our Challenge Dear friends, We hear in our first reading this weekend from the Prophet Isaiah that our journeys of faith are made in the darkness that covers the earth. However, the glory of the Lord shines in the darkness and through all the gloom, so that we may walk in the light. It was St. Paul s great privilege to have God reveal to him His secret plan and that Paul would be the one to carry this extraordinary plan to completion. At the very beginning, God had wanted to draw all people into His covenant Jew and Gentile, male and female, rich and poor. This exploration and journey of faith is open to all. The Magi were drawn to Jesus by a supernatural sign. They left the safety of their homes to embark upon a pilgrimage and they took the journey to a new level of wisdom and strength. One of the earliest expressions of religious faith can be seen in the pilgrimage that many have completed as acts of faith. These acts of faith and worship are dramatic movements of the heart toward God and the transformation of the heart by God. Many of the world s religions have pilgrimages to areas where Jesus and the saints have lived and trod. This is a pure act of religious devotion. Whether we participate in a pilgrimage or not, we as Christians take journeys toward God which transform our hearts. Each of us has a unique journey in our lives. God has a plan that is made special for each one of us. Faith is also a journey. We hope to discover God s plan for us as we travel along life s paths. In our journey through life, we will confront danger but also the possibility for growth. Henry David Thoreau captured the sense of the form of the path when he said: Pursue some path, however narrow and crooked, in which you can walk with love and reverence. And Abraham Lincoln spoke of diverting from a worn path when he stated: Towering genius disdains a beaten path. It seeks regions hitherto unexplored. We have the choice of following the worn paths of the follower or the new paths of the pioneer. Either way carries us toward a new future! Have a good week! Happy New Year! Love and prayers, Father Randy First Reconciliation First Reconciliation Parent Meeting and Afternoon of Reflection will be on Sunday, January 21, 2018, 1:30-3:30pm. PARISH STAFF The Baptism of Jesus Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. But John tried to deter him, saying, I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me? Jesus replied, Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness. Then John consented. As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. MT 3:13-17 The Catholic Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Baptism of Our Lord. This brings to an end the season of Christmas. The Church recalls Our Lord's second manifestation or epiphany which occurred on the occasion of His baptism in the Jordan. Jesus descended into the River to sanctify its waters and to give them the power to beget sons of God. The event takes on the importance of a second creation in which the entire Trinity intervenes. Many of the incidents which accompanied Christ's baptism are symbolical of what happened at our Baptism. At Christ's baptism the Holy Spirit descended upon Him; at our Baptism the Trinity took its abode in our soul. At His baptism Christ was proclaimed the "Beloved Son" of the Father; at our Baptism we become the adopted sons of God. At Christ's baptism the heavens were opened; at our Baptism heaven was opened to us. At His baptism Jesus prayed; after our Baptism we must pray to avoid actual sin. Excerpted from Msgr. Rudolph G.
