District 7930 Club Directory The information in the following pages is to serve as a reference for the personal use of Rotarians only. Under no circumstances should this information be used for solicitation purposes. Up to date club information can be found on the district website at www.clubrunner.ca/7930. A Brief History of Rotary The first Rotary Club in the world was organized in February 1905 in Chicago, Illinois by Paul P. Harris, a young lawyer, who gathered together in a spirit of friendship and understanding a group of three friends; a merchant, a coal dealer and a mining engineer. Harris wished to recapture the friendly spirit he had felt among business people in the small town where he had grown up. That basis for membership one person from each business and profession in the community still exists in Rotary. At first, the members of the new club met in rotation at their various places of business which suggested the name Rotary. Since 1905, the idea of Paul Harris and his friends have become ideals which have been accepted by people of all nationalities, and of many political and religious beliefs. The universal acceptance of Rotary principles has been so great the there are now more than 31,000 clubs in 538 districts and 35 geographical regions. Total membership of active Rotarians worldwide exceeds 1.2 million. The Little Red Schoolhouse in Wallingford, VT, where Paul Harris grew up. 23

The Rotary Foundation The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International is a notfor-profit corporation that receives contributions totaling more thatn US $70 million annually and distributes some $65 million each year in support of humanitarian and educational programs implemented by clubs and districts. Contriburions from Rotarians go into both the Foundations Annual Programs Fund, which provides grants and awards through Foundation programs, and the Permanent Fund, an endowment from which only the earnings are spent in support of Foundation programs. This insures the longterm viability of the Foundation. Every dollar contributed by Rotarians funds humanitarian and educational programs that enable Rotarians to extend their service internationally. Clubs and districts apply for and receive Foundation grants to carry out many worthy projects worldwide. The Rotary Foundation s mission is to support the efforts of Rotary International in the fulfullment of the Object of Rotary, Rotary s mission and the achievement of world understanding and peace through local, national and international humanitarianism, educational and cultrual programs. Humanitarian Programs grants enable Rotarians to increase their support of international service projects that provide water wells, basic shelters, medical care, literacy classes and other essentials to people in need. Rotarian participation is key to the success of these projects: Global Grants Volunteer Service Grants Distict Managed Grants Projects that fall within the six areas of focus Information on all these programs is available from your District Foundation Committee at the beginning of this book. Educational Programs are designed to promote international understanding by bringing people together from different countries and cultures. Rotarians participate in these programs by hosting scholars, leading Vocational Training teamss and other activites which include: Global Scholarships Rotary World Peace Scholarships Vocational Training Teams 78

Polio Plus, now called the $200 Million Challenge is the RI program that seeks to eradicate Polio world-wide by 2012-2013. Before eradication efforts began in 1985, polio paralyzed more that 1,000 children a day, which totaled about 350,000 children annually. The incidence of polio has since declined by more than 99%. Today, the program provides vaccine and transportation for mass immunization campaigns and support for social mobilization, survelliance and laboratories to help carry out the final stages of global eradication. Polio has now been eradicated in the Western Hemishpere (1994), the Western Pacific region (2000), Europe (2002) and India (2012). Today polio remains endemic in only three countries; Nigeria, Afghanistan and Pakistan. In recognition of Rotary s leadership in this effort, in 2007, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation awarded the Rotary Foundation a US $100 million matching grant, and another $250 million in 2009. Rotary International continues to work in partnership with the World Health Organization, US Centers for Disease Control and UNICEF, and remains the larges private sector partner in this effort. Club and individual contributions to the Rotary Foundation may be mailed to: The Rotary Foundation 14280 Collections Center Drive Chicago, IL 60693 or contact the Foundation Chair Ingrid Brown or any of your Grant Chairs for further information. 79

Rotaract Rotaract clubs for men and women aged 18-30 foster leadership and responsible citizenship, encourage high ethical standards in business and promote international understanding and peace. A program of Rotary International, Rotaract clubs work under the guidance of their local Rotary club. Many Rotaract service projects focus on issues of importance to young people such as AIDS, the environment, homelessness, urban peace, and drug abuse. Interact Interact is an international organization of service and social clubs for young people ages 14-18 that fosters leadership, understanding and peace. A program of Rotary International, each Interact club is sponsored by a local Rotary club. Each year Interact clubs complete a community service project and a project that furthers international understanding and goodwill. RYLA The Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) conference is held annually in Rotary District 7930. The RYLA conference seeks to develop leadership potential in high school juniors by identifying those barriers that get in the way of being a good leader. In order to be eligible for participation, potential candidates must complete an application and be interviewed by local Rotarians. Youth Exchange The most powerful force in the promotion of international understanding and peace is exposure to different cultures. The world becomes a smaller, friendlier place when we learn that all people - regardless of nationality - desire the same basic things: a safe, comfortable environment that allows for a rich and satisfying life for our children and ourselves. Youth Exchange provides thousands of young people with the opportunity to meet people from other lands and to experience their cultures. This plants the seeds for a lifetime of international understanding. 80

How to Propose a New Member in Your Rotary Club Every Rotarian has the privilege and obligation of seeking qualified members. In this way, all club members can help their clubs achieve a full representation of the business and professional life of the community. Use form 254 EN to propose a new member for your club. You owe it to your club and to your community. Do it today! The basic procedure by which an individual is proposed for and elected to membership in a Rotary Club is: The prospective member s name is submitted to the board of directors. The board ensures that the person is fully qualified and approves or disapproves of the proposal within 30 days. The proposer is notified by the club secretary. NOTE: Until this approval is granted, prospective members should not be informed that they have been proposed for membership. The prospective member is informed of privileges and responsibilities of club membership. He or she is then asked to complete the proposal form and give written permission to publish his or her name and proposed classification to the club membership. The prospective member s name is published to the club. If no objections are received within seven days following the publication of the name, that person, upon payment of an admission fee, is inducted as a new Rotarian, and the club secretary sends a completed New Member Report form to Rotary International. 81

Active membership is limited to the greater of five persons or ten percent of the club membership per classification, except for those representing religious denominations, newspapers and other news media and also diplomatic representatives of different governments. NOTE - Holders of Public Office. Persons elected or appointed to public office for a specified time are not eligible for active membership under the classification of such office, except persons elected or appointed to the judiciary or educational offices. 82

How a New Rotary Club Is Started Each year hundreds of new Rotary clubs are formed. Organizing a new Rotary club is a fundamental responsibility of the District Governor. If you have interest or information about the viability of forming a new Rotary club, please consult with the District Governor or hislher special representative. There are several forms that must be completed to organize a new Rotary club: Organization of a New Club Survey Form. This survey is required and it is the first part of the process. Completed by the District Governor, (or his designated surveyor) this form provides information about the locality, its population and economic outlook, principal industries, activities and institutions, other service organizations, possible meeting places, etc. New Club Sponsor Form. Sponsor clubs must have 25 members. The club membership must vote to be a sponsor club - not the club board of directors. The form requires the signature of both the club president and secretary. New Club Membership Application Form. This is the official form for applying for membership in Rotary. It requires the signatures of the provisional club president, secretary, the district governor and special representative. The form will list the charter officers and directors, the name of the club, a description of the locality, the day, time and place of weekly meetings, the dates for the club s annual meeting and monthly board meetings, the admission fees and annual dues, mailing address for the club and a list of the charter members (20 minimum). For more information about forming a new Rotary club, please contact Membership Chair Josh Garfinkle or visit the download center at www.rotary.org. 83
