First Grade Communicable Disease Unit Overview The goal of health education is for students to acquire the health information and skills necessary to become healthy adults. This includes being able to identify appropriate and inappropriate health behaviors. Students must understand several key concepts: 1) they should first seek health care guidance from their parents; 2) health is influenced by a variety of factors; 3) personal behaviors can increase or reduce health risks throughout that person s life span; 4) students should recognize and utilize health information and products; 5) personal and interpersonal skills are needed to promote individual, family, and community health. In first grade, students learn about their bodies and ways to care for themselves. They also begin to recognize that relationships exist between behaviors and health, and community helpers such as nurses and doctors help them stay healthy. Concept The student shall demonstrate awareness of communicable and noncommunicable diseases and causes. I. Instructional Objectives Students will: A. Describe activities that are provided by health care professionals such as medical checkups and dental exams. (TEKS 1.1B) B. Explain the harmful effects of, and ways to avoid, alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. (TEKS 1.2C) C. Name types of germs that cause illness and disease. (TEKS 1.7A) D. Identify common illnesses and diseases and their symptoms. (TEKS 1.7B) E. Explain common practices that control the way germs are spread. (TEKS 1.7C) II. Teaching Suggestions/ Activities A. Students discuss how tobacco, alcohol and other drugs are harmful to your body. Teacher uses the time to reinforce the difference between harmful and helpful drugs. Students will explain how to avoid harmful drugs. B. Students will work in groups to research healthcare professional. Students will make a poster of the professional and list services they provide to the public. 1

C. Students will identify types of germs that cause disease (i.e. Bacteria and virus). They will look at the structure of these germs and discuss what type of illnesses they can cause. Students will make a wanted poster of a germ of their choice. Background (share with students) Germs are tiny living things that can cause disease. There are different kinds of germs such as bacteria and viruses. (virus= cold bacteria=pink eye). People get sick when germs enter the body. Germs can enter through openings like eyes, ears, nose, mouth, cuts, scrapes or other injury to the skin. D. Students will discuss common diseases and symptoms. Teacher will record student responses on a T chart. E. Teacher and students make a web of communicable diseases on chart paper and post in the room. Students can put post it notes on the chart of symptoms of the disease and/or ways to prevent the spread of the disease. F. Teacher models the appropriate way to wash hands, cover mouths and noses when coughing and sneezing, blowing noses with tissue, being cautious around sharp objects, and not sharing certain items with your friends like food, drinks, hats, and earrings. Students will be able to explain common ways to stop the spread of germs. G. Teacher models appropriate first aid techniques to be used when caring for yourself or others. Students demonstrate what to do when they or a friend have a bloody nose, open wound, loose teeth, vomiting, or body waste products. Stress the importance of not touching or exposing themselves to anyone else s body fluids. III. Enrichment Activities A. Teacher demonstrates the spread of germs through a sneeze. Use a small amount of talcum powder or cornstarch on your hand. Without covering your hand, Teacher will pretend to sneeze and let powder spray out into crowd of children. Discuss what happened. Ask students what we could do to prevent the spread of the germ. Demonstrate ways they suggest. (Need to stress use of tissue or elbow to cover sneezes) B. Invite a healthcare professional to speak to the class. C. Make a poster on Word or Publisher to demonstrate how to stay away from harmful drugs. IV. Remediation/ Modification Activities 2

A. Practice/model good health habits in the classroom. B. Provide wipes, hand soap (hand sanitizer if sink is not present), and tissues for a healthier classroom environment. C.
