The Cyclops American Legion Dewey Lowman Post #109 September / October 2017 - Our 84th Year Commander s Message I hope everyone enjoyed their summer! Now that we are looking to Fall, that means one thing, Ravens Football! Once again, we will be having a potluck every Sunday during the football season. If you can't make it to the stadium, come on down to the Post, bring your favorite dish, and enjoy a beer or two and cheer on the Baltimore Ravens with your fellow Legionnaires! Our annual Crab Feast was a great success. I have heard almost 100% positive feedback from the attendees. As with any event at our post, we never would have been able to hold this large of an event without Legion, Auxiliary and Sons of the American Legion members stepping up to volunteer, thank you! Our Monday night cleaning crew is dwindling. We went from having at least a dozen people when we began last year, to only having five show up for the August crew. Obviously, this seriously limits how effective we can be. The cleaning crew will meet September 11th and October 2nd at 7pm. We generally do a little cleaning and small repairs around the post that would be difficult to complete while the post is open. Please consider attending, the upkeep of our post shouldn't fall on the shoulders of a few. Just a reminder, no matter how much or how little time you can give to the post, there is a volunteer opportunity for you! For God and Country Alicia Knecht, Commander Stay Connected With What s Happening at Post 109 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/dewey109/ Website: http://www.americanlegionpost109.org/ Subscribe to the weekly emails and stay up to date on everything happening at Post 109. Email your name to: Cyclops@AmericanLegionPost109.org. We use a secure service and you can unsubscribe at any time. The Crab Feast was a great success. Sold out for 3rd year in a row. Thank you. For the third consecutive year our annual crab feast was a sell out. It was a great time with delicious food from Beefalo Bob's and Captain Dick's Crabs Galore and fantastic dancing music by Kaleidoscope. Many thanks to our volunteers who made this another successful effort: Paul Black, John and Patty Calvert, Clyde Thomas, Donna Hayes, Karen Herstein. John and Margaret Henn, Pete Summers, Laura and Christina Foerster Puglisi, Darlene and Charles Cline, Bill and Judy Ganz, Alicia Knecht, Jim Sullivan, Lucy Sears, Deneen Blair, and the Elkridge Young Marines. We couldn't have done it without you! Sharon Knecht Chair Canteen News We now have 12 oz. bottles of Corona for $3.50 per bottle. The Bucket Special is all day every day; 5 Domestic Cans for $11.00. Friday night dinners from 5 to 8 pm and Karaoke at 8. Every Saturday night live bands start at 7 pm and the 50/50 raffle and Queen of Diamonds drawings are around 9:20 pm. The Auxiliary monthly meetings resume on September 12 th, 2017, the second Tuesday of the month in the post hall, beginning at 7:30. Please mark your calendar and plan to attend. The casual meeting that we held at the end of July was well attended, relaxing, fun, and there was plenty of tasty food. Thank you to everyone who attended. It was exciting to hear the great ideas and the enthusiasm was contagious. We are going to have a lot to do this year, and every woman is needed to make it a success. On Wednesday, October 11 th the bus to the Harrington Casino in Delaware takes off at 9:30 a.m. from the Post parking lot. If you haven t reserved your space, do it soon. For only $30.00 you get to enjoy some free play at the casino, a half price buffet and great company. Please make your reservations soon, and don t forget to invite friends and family. On Veteran s Day, Saturday, November 11 th, we are holding A Salute to Vietnam Veterans. This is a luncheon where we will honor those who served during the Vietnam War Era, between November 1, 1955 through May 15, 1975. We are very excited to be an approved partner with the U.S. Vietnam Veteran s War Commemoration, and to have this opportunity to say thank you, along with the Nation, to those who served. Each Vietnam Veteran will be given a Vietnam Veteran s lapel pin. Veteran s should sign up at the Canteen or call Sharon Knecht. See the flyer in this Cyclops for detailed information. Do you know an up and coming leader? We are seeking young women candidates for the American Legion Girl s State/Girl s Nation program, who have completed their junior year of high school and have at least one semester remaining before they graduate from high school. This is a unique, and coveted educational opportunity for young women that instills the basic ideals and principles of American government through the American Legion Auxiliary Girls State/Nation citizenship training programs. There are many benefits to being a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Among those benefits is access to the Dewey Lowman Post Canteen where you can find fun and friendship while enjoying live music on Saturdays and Karaoke on Friday nights, among many other things. This is in addition to the medical and insurance products and many discounts your membership provides. But the most important part of being an American Legion Auxiliary member are the opportunities to participate in supporting the post, veterans, active duty military and their families, as well as promoting patriotism, and love of country. Many hands make light work. It s going to be a busy year and your active participation is essential. Please give us a hand, attend the meetings, and take part in our events and activities. Please feel free to contact me if you have questions or concerns, call me at 410-789-2019 or email auxunit109@gmail.com.
