The Cyclops American Legion Dewey Lowman Post #109 November / December 2017 - Our 84th Year Commander s Message The holiday season is upon us once again! As always, the post will be closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Years Day so our paid staff and volunteers can spend time with their families. We will have our yearly Christmas Party from noon till 6pm on Dec. 24th and we will be holding a New Years Eve party complete with a band, so come out and celebrate with your fellow Legion members! Veteran's Day is shaping up to be a busy day at 109. Flags go up at 8am and down at 5pm, our annual Veteran's Day Flagpole Ceremony is at 10:30am, and this year, Dewey Lowman Auxiliary Unit 109, in conjunction with Post 109 is hosting "A Salute to Vietnam Veterans" from 1-4pm. We are proud to have this opportunity to host such an event and thank a generation of service members that didn't receive the appreciation and respect they deserved when they returned from serving our country. There's a lot going on at our Post over the next couple of months, so if you have not yet signed up for our weekly emails, now is the time to do it! Simply send an email to: cyclops@americanlegionpost109.org to opt in. Also, our Post Facebook page is constantly being updated, and a great way to find out about upcoming events, weekly bands and so much more! "Like" Dewey Lowman American Legion Post 109, and you will receive Post info right in your newsfeed! Attendance for our monthly "GI Party" has dwindled significantly. We meet the first Monday of each month at 7pm. We use this time to take care of minor maintenance issues and deep clean areas of the bar that don't usually get much attention. Please consider helping, as I have said before, the upkeep of our post shouldn't fall on the shoulders of a few. I hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday season! For God and Country Alicia Knecht, Commander Veteran's Day November 11 Arbutus Flagpole Ceremony at 10:30 am Post driveway flags go up at 8 am, down at 5 pm Canteen News New - All Day Every Sunday 50 Cents off all beer, wine and drinks. Dewey Lowman Unit # 109 Auxiliary Auxiliary Meetings are held on the 2nd Tuesday of the month except July & August It is a busy time of year filled with holidays that require gratitude, love, shopping, cooking, decorating, wrapping it s quite a list when you think about it. On top of that, there is a lot going on with the American Legion Auxiliary Dewey Lowman Unit 109! On Veteran s Day, Saturday, November 11 th, we are holding A Salute to Vietnam Veterans. At this luncheon we will honor those who served during the Vietnam War Era, between November 1, 1955 through May 15, 1975. Wayne Gilchrist, a decorated Vietnam Veteran and former Congressman will be our guest speaker. There is no cost for Vietnam Veterans and their one guest. Others are welcome to join us for only $10.00 per person for an All American Lunch and a memorable event. Everyone who is interested in attending should sign up soon, the seats are filling up. There is a sign-up sheet in the Canteen or you may call Sharon Knecht at 410-227-0169. Visit this webpage or click on the following link to download the flyer. http://www.americanlegionpost109.org/ wp-content/uploads/2017/09/vietnam.pdf Be on the lookout for the Fall Cash Calendar Event coming to your mailbox soon! Purchase the three tickets (or more) to support the Auxiliary projects, and keep your fingers crossed that you will be a lucky winner just in time in January to pay the bills for all those Christmas gifts. Our next meeting is Tuesday, November 14 th, please mark your calendar and plan to attend. At the Meeting on Tuesday December 12 th, we will get through the business meeting as quick as we can and enjoy the potluck treats provided by the members as we celebrate the season together. There are several celebrations to enjoy over the next two months. But the first holiday on Saturday, November 11 th is the day we celebrate all veterans for their service and sacrifice. Freedom is never Free, and who knows the truth of that more than a veteran and his or her family? I take pride that I can thank Vietnam Veterans at the luncheon on that special day. I will remember and acknowledge family and friends, here and gone, who served. Without the guardianship of our veterans, we would not have the freedoms we enjoy today. As Elmer Davis said: This Nation shall remain the land of the free, only so long as it is the home of the brave. If you are able, please begin Veteran s Day by attending the service at 10:30 a.m. at the flagpole in Arbutus. Please remember, Auxiliary members, your participation is important, and I hope to see you at an upcoming meeting. If you are not receiving an occasional email with Auxiliary updates and information, please call me at 410-789-2019 or email auxunit109@gmail.com. I wish you and yours a safe and happy Veteran s Day, Thanksgiving, Hanukah, Christmas, and New Year. crowds are growing into the mid to upper 40 s. We even toped the 50 player plateau so which increased the prize money across the board. Our players will participate in a survey over the next few weeks to get their perspective on how we are doing, and if they would like to see any changes in our Bingo program. These results will be shared with the Post Commander after 1 st of the year. If there are any changes, they will take effect February 5 th. Bingo players recently ran two 50-50 raffles with the proceeds going to the American Legion National Emergency Relief Fund. A total of $173.00 was collected. A big thanks to the players. It s Back Cash Calendar January Back by popular demand our Cash Calendar Fundraiser will take place January. Look for your tickets in the mail arriving mid November.
