UPPER PENINSULA REGION 01 01 ANCHOR COUPLING, MENOMINEE Anchor Coupling, Inc., established in 1938 in the Chicago area, has called Menominee home since 1978 and has been a wholly owned subsidiary of Caterpillar Inc. since 1993. The manufacturer of high and medium pressure hydraulic hose and coupling assemblies for large and small original equipment manufacturers including Caterpillar is growing in the U.P. It has purchased a building adjacent to its existing facility Menominee, investing more than $9 million and adding up to 120 new jobs. To support the project, the state approved a $1 million Michigan Business Development Program performance-based grant to help with the expansion and win the project over other sites in the U.S. and Mexico. The city of Menominee is backing the expansion with local tax abatements. MARQUETTE FOOD CO-OP, MARQUETTE Marquette Food Cooperative, Inc., a 42-year-old community-owned organic and natural grocery store, has grown into a regional food hub that includes a teaching kitchen and educational classroom. The Co-op has rehabilitated two vacant, functionally-obsolete buildings in Marquette to accommodate its expansion, which generated $3.4-million in private investment and created 30 new jobs. The expansion allowed it to triple its size, occupying 11,000-square feet of retail space and more than 9,000 square-feet of additional commercial space. A receiving and loading dock area and an adjoining passage area between the two buildings were also part of the new construction. 310,156 The state approved a $615,000-Michigan Community Revitalization Program grant in May to support the project, and the city of Marquette contributed $115,000 towards the project in the form of a tax abatement. $10,719,771,557 1. Manufacturing (10,076) SKILLED TRADES TRAINING FUND SUPERIOR FABRICATION COMPANY, KINCHELOE Superior Fabrication has created a world-class manufacturing facility in Kincheloe, complete with design, engineering and customer service support. Since 1979, the company has expanded its presence in the community and now occupies five buildings with approximately 175,000 square feet. To keep its workforce on the cutting edge, the company applied for and received a $10,600 Skilled Trades Training Fund grant administered through the Eastern Upper Peninsula Michigan Works! to boost the skills of eight employees related to mill and lathes, robotics programming and maintenance, and CNC machining. 01 UPPER PENINSULA REGION 10 $ 19,081,545 313 01 UPPER PENINSULA REGION Thanks to the training grant, the company was able to increase production, promote current staff and hire an additional six workers. Mill and lathe operators were promoted to programmers and their operator positions were backfilled with new employees. NORTHWEST REGION 02 02 18 $59,684,280 386 UPTOWN-RIVERFRONT TOWNHOMES ON THE BOARDMAN RIVER, TRAVERSE CITY An underutilized riverfront property in Traverse City that was historically utilized for dumping waste and other household debris is being transformed into an $11.8-million mixed-use condominium project with a new downtown boardwalk. The Uptown-Riverfront Townhomes on the Boardman River, under development by Midtown Development Inc., will consist of 13 multi-story condominium units as well as live-work mixed use units. Grand Traverse County was awarded $880,000 in Community Development Block Grant funds in July to remediate the contaminated property. In addition, the county s Brownfield Redevelopment Authority is using local and school tax capture valued at $1.9 million for extensive site preparation activities such as geotechnical engineering, land balancing, relocation of existing utilities and infrastructure improvements. The total investment will be approximately $11.8 million and 12 permanent full time jobs are expected to be created for the live-work portion of the project. SHORT S BREWING COMPANY, BELLAIRE Popular restaurant and brewpub Short s Brewing Company in Bellaire underwent a $587,550 expansion, helping to revitalize the village s downtown and serving as a catalyst for additional investment and development in the area. The 10-year-old northern Michigan microbrewery expanded its current 4,000-square-foot pub and brew house into connecting storefronts currently housed by Bellaire Pharmacy, adding another 3,900 square feet. The pharmacy moved into a vacant building across the street, which Short s helped renovate. MEDC awarded a $309,000 Community Development Block Grant to the Village of Bellaire for the acquisition and redevelopment of the two adjacent multi-story buildings. The village also contributed about $5,000 for a consultant to administer the project. The project is expected to create 18 new jobs. Short s has agreed that at least 10 of the 18 positions created by the project will be held by low-and moderate-income individuals. PRECISION EDGE SURGICAL PRODUCTS, BOYNE CITY A northern Michigan medical device maker is expanding its manufacturing facility in Boyne City and upgrading the skills of its workforce. 300,481 Precision Edge Surgical Products is adding $2 million in equipment and hiring 30 new employees. To help with job training, MEDC awarded a $350,000 Community Development Block Grant to Charlevoix County. As part of the grant agreement, Precision has agreed that at least 16 of the new positions will be held by low or moderate income individuals. Boyne City supported the project through property tax abatements of about $251,000. $10,843,876,797 Precision Edge is one of the leading private-sector entities that has partnered with North Central Michigan College to fund the new Mobile Digital Fabrication Lab. NORTHEAST REGION 03 03 KALITTA AIR, OSCODA CHARTER TOWNSHIP 8 $20,254,403 478 The formerly shuttered Wurtsmith Air Force Base in Oscoda is now flying high with activity thanks to Kalitta Air. The Michigan-based airline that provides worldwide air carrier services houses its aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul services facility at the former military installation, now known as the Oscoda-Wurtsmith Airport. Kalitta employs 789 in Oscoda at its 400,000 square-foot facility that includes seven heavy aircraft maintenance hangers, two jet engine repair shops and a 10-meter jet engine test cell. To help the company launch its growth plans in Michigan, the state approved a $2-million Michigan Business Development Program performance-based grant in February to back the company s $9.7-million expansion and the creation of 200 new jobs. In addition, the state awarded Oscoda Charter Township $1.5 million in Community Block Grant funds for infrastructure improvements. The township is approved has approved tax increment financing at an estimated value of $1.6 million over 15 years to support the company s expansion. DOWNTOWN VICTORIAN PARK, WEST BRANCH A vacant lot in Downtown West Branch between Logger s Depot and Downtown Books has new life as the city s newest public park. The Downtown Victorian Park, also known as West Branch s new pocket park, opened in Oct. 2014 thanks to a $244,986 Downtown Infrastructure Grant from the Community Development Block Grant program. MEDC helped city officials secure the grant, which was used for infrastructure upgrades to the site including public restrooms, watermain and sewer improvements, lighting, a fountain, wall mural, public seating, sidewalk enhancements and a significant amount of landscaping. The city committed to $30,279 in matching funds for the project. SKILLED TRADES TRAINING FUND MORAN IRON WORKS, ONAWAY Moran Iron Works designs, develops and installs metal work projects. The company is located in Onaway with plans to continue growth and aid in the development of a qualified workforce. In order to meet their needs and to help build potential workforce skills, Moran is actively influencing the change to train and hire potential workers to help meet the welding production need. 03 NORTHEAST REGION 202,476 $5,110,444,989 1. Manufacturing (5,399) 03 NORTHEAST REGION As one of largest employers in Northeast Michigan, reading blue prints and discovering practical geometric solutions for the layout and fabrication of metal components are a necessity for the work outlined at Moran Iron Works. With the help of $10,600 Skilled Trades Training Funds Grant through Michigan Works! Northeast Michigan Consortium, Moran was able to partner with North Central Michigan College and offer this training to 12 employees, who completed the course in late December. Administrative and Support and Waste Management and Remediation Services (61,598) 114 $553,786,754 3,229 China-based Dicastal North America Inc., the largest aluminum wheel manufacturer in the world, announced in September that Greenville would be the company s first home outside of China for one of its facilities. The company is investing approximately $140 million to open a new aluminum alloy wheel manufacturing plant at the former United Solar complex and bringing 300 new jobs to the area. The 98-acre facility and 100,000 square feet of manufacturing space has sat vacant since 2012. The MEDC teamed up with The Right Place, Inc. and the city of Greenville to win the project over 35 other sites across the United States. Incentives include a $3.5-million Michigan Business Development Program performance-based grant, a $5-million Community Development Block Grant for the acquisition of the building, and additional support including local abatements and workforce training. Consumers Energy also developed a competitive, innovative pricing plan to help secure the project valued at over $12 million. Dicastal expects to have 125 employees by December 2015 for the start of production in early 2016 and 300 employees by the end of 2016. SPARTANNASH, BYRON CENTER SpartanNash of Grand Rapids, the nation s fifth largest grocery distributor, announced in November 2013 that its new headquarters resulting from the merger of Spartan Stores, Inc. with Nash Finch Company would remain in Byron Center. This was a major victory for the Grand Rapids area over strong competition from Minneapolis and other states -- for a Fortune 500 company and as many as 300 new jobs and retention of 620 existing jobs. MEDC, in partnership with Byron Township and The Right Place, Inc., made a strong business case to win the company s $18.3-million investment. Incentives included a $2.75-million Michigan Business Development Program performance-based grant and a local abatement from Byron Township valued at $1.9 million. ARENA PLACE, GRAND RAPIDS Arena Place, a $45 million development that will put new offices, housing and retail on a city parking lot across the street from Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, is expected to be completed in the winter of 2015. It will include 101 market-rate apartments and 250 parking spaces, along with 17,000 square feet of ground floor retail space that will include a restaurant with outdoor seating. The project is expected to generate a total capital investment of $44 million and create 65 new full-time jobs. State and local support include a $4.5 million Michigan Community Revitalization Program performance-based loan approved in March and Grand Rapids Downtown Development Authority approval of $1.8 million in tax capture over the next 15 years for accessibility enhancements. Accommodation and Food Services (21,863) BANCROFT, SAGINAW Talent is the new currency in economic development, and with all the exciting developments taking place in Saginaw, the community has some extra capital to spend. One of the developments attracting new talent and businesses to the city s downtown is the Bancroft, an historic, 100-year-old building that was once listed among the grandest hotels in Michigan. Thanks to one of the largest investments in downtown Saginaw since the renovation of the Dow Center, the restored Bancroft today offers 122 luxury apartments with four commercial storefronts. Developer Bancroft Project Saginaw LLC invested $6 million in the project that was backed by a $1 million Michigan Community Revitalization Program performance-based grant approved in April and a 12-year Obsolete Property Rehabilitation Act tax abatement valued at an estimated $603,048 from the city of Saginaw. The city worked closely with Saginaw Future Inc. to help streamline the renovation process and put incentives in place to help make the project viable. The city and Saginaw Future Inc. assisted with property acquisition that included bid solicitations from around the country by the Michigan State Housing Development Authority. 40 $51,682,955 710 COMMUNITY VENTURES, SAGINAW Michigan s comeback story is more than noteworthy economic statistics and trends. It s about changing lives for the better. Community Ventures, a public/private partnership developed to help create long-term employment opportunities for structurally unemployed people living in four of the state s most economically distressed communities: Detroit, Flint, Pontiac, and Saginaw is doing just that. Now in its third year, Community Ventures has partnered with over 100 companies and dozens of local community partners to place 2,600 structurally unemployed people in employment, including 323 people in Saginaw in FY 2014. MEDC has recruited over 20 Saginaw employers into the program, including Nexteer Automotive. Nexteer has hired 221 employees through Community Ventures. The Saginaw News said it best. In a November 9, 2014, editorial, it wrote, This is a public/ private partnership that is truly making a difference in people s lives. It s providing a talent pool matched to the needs of companies around the state, and it s empowering people who previously may have lost hope of ever making a living. For them, and for us, that s a giant step in the right direction. SUNIVA INC., SAGINAW TOWNSHIP 05 EAST CENTRAL REGION 05 EAST CENTRAL REGION When Suniva was looking for a site to locate its new state-of-the-art solar modular assembly facility, it found everything it needed skilled workers, proximity to suppliers, and a central U.S. location in Saginaw County. These factors, along with state and local support, helped MEDC, Saginaw Future Inc., and Saginaw Township convince the Georgia-based company and leading American manufacturer of high-efficiency crystalline silicon photovoltaic solar cells and solar modules to invest in Michigan over competing sites in Georgia and Mississippi. Suniva is investing up to $12.5 million in its second U.S. solar manufacturing facility at the former Sears Warehouse in Saginaw Township. It plans to create 350 jobs over the next few years. Suniva was awarded a $2.5 million Michigan Business Development Program performance-based grant in July, and Saginaw Township approved local tax abatements. Accommodation and Food Services (23,380) DAIRY FARMERS OF AMERICA, CASS CITY Michigan has a new platform to showcase the state s standing as one of the nation s top food and agricultural centers. Dairy Farmers of America (DFA), a national milk marketing cooperative, has built and equipped a new $40 million, 33,000-square-foot dairy manufacturing plant in the Village of Cass City Industrial Park. The plant will process up to 3 million pounds of fresh milk each day to be supplied by DFA member farms in the Michigan Thumb area. The plant will be operational in early 2015. To support the project, the state approved a $500,000 Michigan Business Development Program performance-based grant at the end of 2013. In addition, The Michigan Economic Development Corporation awarded the company $300,000 in corporate funds. The state also approved a $1 million Community Development Block Grant program infrastructure grant for wastewater treatment facility improvements needed for the plant. The Village of Cass City approved revenue bonding necessary for a wastewater treatment plant and public infrastructure improvements at the industrial park. Additionally, Tuscola County and Cass City were approved for a new 15-year Agriculture Processing Renaissance Zone designation. The plant will be providing approximately 50 new jobs to the area. 25 $28,489,033 808 COMMUNITY VENTURES, FLINT Michigan s comeback story is more than noteworthy economic statistics and trends. It s about changing lives for the better. Community Ventures, a public-private partnership developed to help create long-term employment opportunities for structurally unemployed people living in four of the state s most economically distressed communities: Detroit, Flint, Pontiac, and Saginaw is doing just that. Now in its third year, Community Ventures has partnered with over 100 companies and dozens of local community partners to place 2,600 structurally unemployed people in employment, including 220 people in Flint in FY 2014. MEDC has recruited 23 Flint-area employers into the program, including Genesee Packaging, Corsair Engineering, New Life Enterprises, Northgate and TMI Climate Air Solutions. These five companies have pooled their resources and formed a partnership called the Mid-Michigan Employer Resource Network. The partnership enhances success coaching, soft skills training, job retention services and additional training and support. Mott Community College functions as the administrator and service provider. The Department of Human Services and Genesee-Shiawassee Michigan Works are also partnering in the effort. HEALTH & WELLNESS DISTRICT, FLINT URC FJ, LLC and Uptown Reinvestment Corporation Inc. (URC) is redeveloping four city blocks in Downtown Flint for an emerging health and wellness district. The Flint Health & Wellness District is anchored by two age-old institutions Michigan State University (MSU) and the Flint Farmer s Market. The project also includes the demolition of the Genesee Towers, a historical thorn in the side of the city, which has paved the way for a new urban plaza in its place. The new home of MSU s School of Public Health occupies approximately 40,000 square feet of the former Flint Journal building, while the remainder is built-out to include future tenant space and 16 loft-style apartments -- all leased before the new building s ribbon-cutting ceremony. 06 EAST MICHIGAN REGION 06 EAST MICHIGAN REGION Next door, the relocated Flint Farmer s Market beckons offers fresh food options and amenities such as restaurants and community kitchen space. In the first 4 months since their opening in June 2014, the Farmer s market saw over 350,000 patrons come through their doors smashing a full year s attendance numbers of roughly 280,000 at the previous location. The project will generate a total capital investment of $29.8 million and create 75 full-time jobs. The state approved a $5.6 million Michigan Community Revitalization Program incentive to support the project, and the City of Flint is providing a Community Development Block Grant totaling $880,000 and an Obsolete Property Rehabilitation Certificate. Accommodation and Food Services (17,186) A former dilapidated bar and community eyesore along Lansing s busy Michigan Avenue corridor between the Michigan State University campus and Downtown is now the site of The Midtown, a $6.8 million mixed-used development featuring high-end apartments that cater to MSU international students and young professionals. Developer 3411 E. Michigan LLC, a related entity of East Lansing-based Gillespie Group, was awarded a $450,000 Community Revitalization Program performance-based grant in Dec. 2013 to build 66 residential apartments and approximately 1,800 square feet of commercial space for PNC Bank. The new development was aided by the Ingham County Land Bank which provided a $400,000 grant. The project also spurred additional improvements to the adjacent shopping center, attracting new businesses like Biggby and Battery Giant. NIOWAVE, LANSING 27 $186,174,638 902 The United States currently produces a tiny fraction of the world s radiopharmaceuticals used for diagnostic and treatment purposes. One Lansing company is working to change that dynamic. Niowave, the global leader in superconducting accelerator technology, is expanding its operations to meet the growing need for medical radioisotopes, free electron lasers and advanced x-ray sterilization techniques. Backed by a $3 million Michigan Business Development performance-based grant with repayment terms approved in Nov. 2013, the company is investing $79 million in a new radioisotope production facility in Lansing and adding 120 new jobs. MEDC partnered with the city, Lansing Economic Area Partnership, Airport Authority, and Port Lansing Next Michigan Development Corporation to win the project over a competing site in Illinois. Radiopharmaceuticals is a burgeoning industry worth $3 billion a year. The Niowave expansion will position Lansing as a new center of radiopharmaceutical research and development. ORCHID ORTHOPEDIC SOLUTIONS LLC, HOLT Orchid Orthopedic Solutions, a global orthopedic parts manufacturer, is growing and creating new jobs in the Lansing area. To meet rising demand for its expertise, the company is investing $4.8 million in new machinery at its headquarters in Holt. In September, MEDC helped Ingham County secure a $300,000 federal Community Development Block Grant to be used for employee training. The CDBG funds will assist the company with training 35 new employees. In return, the company has agreed that at least 18 of the 35 positions will be held by low to moderate income persons. Accommodation and Food Services (27,761) Brembo North America, an automotive brakes manufacturer whose clients include Ferrari, Porsche, Mercedes, Chrysler, Chevrolet, Ford, General Motors, and Fiat, is investing more than $78.4 million to purchase property and construct a new cast-iron foundry near its Albion Township plant to produce brake rotor castings. The company plans to create 250 new jobs. The foundry, along with engineering and technical offices and warehouse space, will cover about 300,000 square feet. Most of the 250 jobs will be at the foundry, while others will be created at Brembo s Research & Development and headquarters in Plymouth. The investment will be supported in part by incentives from the state and Michigan Economic Development Corporation. In July, Brembo was awarded a $2 million Michigan Business Development Program performance-based grant and a $1.5 million in Community Development Block Grant funds for job training RANSOM REAL ESTATE, KALAMAZOO 36 $203,236,368 951 A property on Kalamazoo s River s Edge area that had been unoccupied for at least two decades has been transformed into a new mixed-use apartment and office building. Ransom Real Estate LLC was awarded a $411,000 Community Redevelopment Program performance-based grant in April to construct the $2.3-million Butler Court Building, a threestory, 12,000 square-foot development at 510 East North Street and a portion of 515 East Ransom Street. The new Butler Court building houses Streamline Healthcare Solutions LLC, a software manufacturer for the health care industry. Streamline previously had an office in suburban Portage but wanted to make a move to downtown Kalamazoo. Along with Streamline Healthcare Solutions, Butler Court contains two condos and four apartments, the tenants of which include an array of working professionals. SKILLED TRADES TRAINING FUND, KALAMAZOO AND ST. JOSEPH COUNTIES Manufacturers in the Kalamazoo-St. Joseph County region were awarded $235,364 in Skilled Trades Training Fund (STTF) grants in January to develop and implement employer responsive training. STTF grants are funded by Michigan s Workforce Development Agency. Companies receiving training grant awards included: Fabri-Kal Corporation of Kalamazoo ($21,000), Vaupell Midwest Molding & Tooling Inc. of Constantine ($30,014), Peterson Spring Corporation of Three Rivers ($25,000), Pro Services Inc. of Portage ($142,000), and a consortium of seven manufacturers made up of AccroSeal of Vicksburg, Parker Hannifin - Hydraulics Division of Kalamazoo, Schupan & Sons Inc. of Kalamazoo, Stryker Instruments and Medical of Kalamazoo, Sturgis Molded Products of Sturgis, Weber Specialties Company of Schoolcraft, and X-L Machine Company Inc. of Three Rivers. The consortium received $17,350. Training included industrial electricity and programmable controls, advanced scientific molding IV, multi-craft maintenance, electrical instrumentation, machinist tool die maker, and computer numerical control. Toyota Motor Engineering and Manufacturing North America, Inc. is engaged in engineering design, vehicle evaluation, materials research, prototype building, powertrain tuning, safety/ crashworthiness, regulatory affairs and advanced research for Toyota and Lexus vehicles manufactured or sold in North America. The company has R&D facilities in Ann Arbor, York Township, Plymouth and Livonia. The company plans to relocate its direct procurement operations from Erlanger, KY to its campus in York Charter Township as part of an increased investment in engineering capabilities. The expansion will require the company to construct a new facility at its York Township location, investing up to $32.5 million and creating 250 jobs. As a result, Toyota was awarded a $4 million Michigan Business Development Program performance-based grant in August. Michigan was chosen over competing sites in multiple states. York Charter Township has approved a 12-year property tax abatement valued at $4.6 million. 47 $260,792,168 2,209 URBAN GROUP DEVELOPMENT COMPANY, ANN ARBOR A new $38-million residential development in Ann Arbor will address the current shortage of rental housing options for young professionals in the city. 618 South Main, under construction by Urban Group Development Company and expected to be open in the summer of 2015, will include 164 residences. Located just outside the downtown district, the luxury apartment complex will offer studios, and one-, two- and three-bedroom units. The building s location at street level, large windows, and steel and masonry shell combine to create a vintage look reminiscent of factory buildings that once were popular in the area. The Michigan Economic Development Corporation is partnering with the city of Ann Arbor to redevelop the former contaminated property. The state approved a $3 million Community Revitalization Program loan and the Ann Arbor Downtown Development Authority approved a $650,000 brownfield grant for site infrastructure improvements like streetscape upgrades and a rain garden for stormwater management. REAU MANUFACTURING COMPANY, DUNDEE Family-owned Reau Manufacturing Company in Dundee is a machining, fabrication, and custom manufacturing company specializing in elevator and escalator parts, laser cutting, press brake forming, CNC milling, tube bending, welding, and design and engineering. While technically a small business, the company has done big things over the years. It replaced all of the drive units for the city of Atlanta pedestrian transportation system to prepare for the 2006 Olympics and, in 2001, replaced the escalator trim for the Washington, DC subway system. Today, Reau Manufacturing is one of the leading custom manufacturing facilities in Michigan. In order to keep its employees on the cutting edge, the company applied for, and was awarded, a $9,830 grant in Nov. 2013 through the Skilled Trades Training Fund (STTF) funded by Michigan s Workforce Development Agency and administered through the Southeast Michigan Community Alliance Michigan Works! Training was provided by Monroe Community College and Trumpf Inc. After completing the training, the employees received a raise. In addition, the company brought on two new hires due to an uptick in business thanks in part to the enhanced skills of its employees. Government (159,809) 153 $2,998,141,892 11,749 PURE MICHIGAN BUSINESS CONNECT DETROIT THREE SUMMIT COBO CENTER, DETROIT Chrysler Group LLC, Ford Motor Company, General Motors and 43 of their Tier 1 partners joined forces last July with MEDC s Pure Michigan Business Connect (PMBC) team and the Detroit Regional Chamber for the first Detroit Three Supplier Summit at Cobo Center in Detroit. The invitation-only event brought more than 400 Michigan suppliers together to connect with buying teams from the Detroit Three and their partners in an effort to spur economic and job growth in the state. In all, 795 meetings were pre-scheduled between buyers and suppliers to discuss 430 open needs provided by the OEM and Tier 1 procurement teams. In hosting nearly 50 of Michigan s largest and most influential companies, the Detroit Three Matchmaking summit marked the largest procurement initiative by PMBC to-date, and another unique opportunity for Michigan to highlight its immense manufacturing talent. It was the first time Chrysler, Ford, and General Motors came together to extend potential opportunities to suppliers in this format. DREAMJOB 2014 FORD FIELD, DETROIT Partnering with companies like Ford, Quicken Loans, Whirlpool, Bosch, Lear, Delphi, Nissan, Roush and McCann Erickson, the MEDC talent team hosted the state s largest-ever job matchmaking summit last June at Ford Field in Detroit. More than 110 Michigan employers from across the state met with 2,000 screened applicants to fill more than 1,200 high-skill, high-pay positions through an innovative matchmaking format that paired qualified candidates with available job openings. The event included information about living in Michigan, tours of downtown work spaces, a networking reception, and an opportunity to attend a Tigers game. PUBLIC SPACES COMMUNITY PLACES GREEN ALLEY PROJECT, MIDTOWN DETROIT The alley between Alexandrine and Selden streets in Midtown Detroit soon will be clean and green, thanks to 131 patrons who funded Midtown Detroit Inc. s Green Alley project. Through the MEDC s Public Spaces Community Places crowdfunding/matching grant initiative, a partnership of the Michigan Municipal League and Detroit-based crowdfunding platform Patronicity, Midtown Detroit Inc. in August raised $52,290 through crowdfunding to renovate the alley, which had been in disrepair for years. That s $2,290 more than Midtown Inc. s original goal of $50,000. MEDC contributed a $50,000 matching grant while Shinola/Detroit LLC provided the project with $100,000. The Michigan Department of Transportation contributed $10,000 through the crowdfunding site. The sustainable alley is equipped to divert water from the storm sewer system using permeable pavers and native plants.
