W DEPARTMENT OF SPORTS ADMINISTRATION Fall 2015-Summer 2016, Volume 5 Department of School of Business Madison Healthplex and Belhaven University Partnership September 6 th, 2016 (Jackson) - The Department of the Belhaven University School of Business have partnered with the Madison Healthplex Performance Training Center to provide internship opportunities for students interested in working in the field of Performance,, Fitness, Dietetics, Physical Therapy, and Facility Management. The partnership becomes the first partnership with this facility, which opened in 2014 with a local university and for that our is extremely proud of this ground-breaking opportunity. As we teach our students about different opportunities in sports, we are extremely excited about our students now getting hands-on opportunities in the field of sports administration, as they learn from Allison Walker, Director of Performance/Registered Dietitian and her staff said Dr. Howard Bartee Jr., Chair and Assistant Professor of the Department, With 15 to 20 students, per semester getting the opportunity to visit this site, we are excited about the prospects of students, now getting a chance to expand their reach in the Greater Jackson area. Leadership Greater Jackson Dr. Howard Bartee, Jr., Department Chair/Assistant Professor of completed the Leadership Greater Jackson program in May of 2016.

DEPARTMENT OF SPORTS ADMINISTRATION 2 5 th Annual Belhaven University Capstone Conference of, Education, Religion and Ethics April 25 th, 2016 (Jackson,MS)- The Department and School of Business presented the 5 th Annual Belhaven University Capstone Conference of, Education, Religion and Ethics on April 25 th, 2016. A total of 32 sports administration students from the Strategic Management in class gave their presentations from their senior capstone projects to a host of students, faculty, administrators, coaches and other invited guests. The class incorporated a complete 10- week, step-by-step research paper process, as part of their research. They utilized APA cited research topic information and weekly virtual discussions into their capstone projects. At the conference, each student was available to answer questions as it related to how sports, education, religion and ethics are intertwined in their pursuits toward their career aspirations. As we celebrate the 5 th annual capstone event, I am amazed the depth of knowledge that these students have gained while students at Belhaven University said Dr. Howard Bartee Jr., Chair and Assistant Professor of the Department. With a changing sports paradigm and an evolving world that we live in, I am excited to know that this group of students will be sports administrators that look at the pros and cons of each issue that they may encounter and thereby be able to make informed decisions, for the greater good of all that they face along the way, both inside and outside the field of sports with a global worldview and a spiritual foundation. This event was held between the hours of 11:00 A.M. and 1:30 P.M. in the McCravey- Triplett Student Center and is annually open to faculty, staff, coaches, sports administrators, students, former internship supervisors, and invited guests of the participants. Phillip Nichols Represents ASC at the NCAA Career in Forum Belhaven Men's Soccer player Phillip Nichols has returned to Jackson to recap his trip to the NCAA Career in Forum, which was held from June 2 to June 5 at the NCAA National Office in Indianapolis, Ind. The Career in Forum, an annual educational forum hosted by the NCAA, brings together 200 selected student-athletes to learn and explore potential careers in sports, with the primary focus on college athletics. Nichols not only represented Belhaven University, but also the American Southwest Conference at the Forum. I really enjoyed several of the keynote speakers, who shared professional experiences that really broke barriers as to ways one can approach a professional career in sports. Also, understanding the many facets in which one can arrive at their desired end was a great encouragement as it shows the diversity and uniqueness of each personal testimony. There were several panel discussions that truly sparked interest and gave great insight. A specific highlight for me was the "Intern and Graduate Assistant" panel, where we heard from an array of interns and graduate assistants to provide insight on job searching, as well as best practices for excelling as a young professional. One thing that I will take with me into my career is the following quote, "Knowing your WHY makes your WHAT so much more meaningful." There is no physical accomplishment, career, or position that could ever truly fulfill all that my heart desires. However, knowing why I do what I do gives me drive, direction, and a sense of purpose. Source: Belhaven University Athletics Website

DEPARTMENT OF SPORTS ADMINISTRATION 3 Study Abroad in London Dr. Ed Garrett Ph.D Students from the Department and School of Business traveled to London, England October 6, 2014 to study international sports culture and management. Students will meet with and learn from professional sports leaders at Wimbledon, Wembley Stadium, London Olympic Training Facilities, Kingston University, Cambridge University and visit NFL Europe offices. As we enter this ground-breaking trip for our Department, our students will gain valuable insight into the sports industry that will last a lifetime, said Dr. Howard Bartee Jr., Chair and Assistant Professor of the Department. With globalization of sports and business growing at a significant rate, we want our students to stay on the cutting edge of where our industry is going, both domestically and internationally. The trip is the first of its kind through the International Site Observation course taught by Dr. Ed Garrett, Assistant Professor of. This is an incredible opportunity for students to gain international sports business experience and to make some lifeimpacting career contacts, said Dr. Garrett. Along with gaining international sports experience, the students plan to serve alongside churches in London. Though this is not a mission trip, we felt that it was important that we lived out Belhaven's mission to serve, and not be served while in London, said Dr. Garrett. The course is expected to run every other year, allowing every sports administration student the opportunity to take the International Site Observation course before they graduate. For information on London trip 2017, please contact: Dr. Ed Garrett at egarrett@belhaven.edu or Dr. Bartee at hbartee@belhaven.edu.
