NEW MANDATE: INCLUSIVE AND SUSTAINABLE INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT (ISID) Lima Declaration Towards inclusive and sustainable industrial development (ISID, 15 th UNIDO General Conference, Dec 2013) ISID enhances and reinforces economic growth and diversification in a socially inclusive and environmentally sound manner, guided by four overarching principles - Every country achieves a higher level of industrialization, and benefits from the globalization of markets for industrial goods and services - No one is left behind in benefiting from industrial growth, and prosperity is shared among all parts of society in all countries - Broader economic and social progress is supported within an environmentally sustainable framework - New approaches are introduced to harness and share available knowledge, technology and innovation 3 3

Goal 9: Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation o Develop quality, reliable, sustainable and resilient infrastructure, including regional and transborder infrastructure, to support economic development and human well-being, with a focus on affordable and equitable access for all o Promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and, by 2030, significantly raise industry s share of employment and gross domestic product, in line with national circumstances, and double its share in least developed countries o Increase the access of small-scale industrial and other enterprises, in particular in developing countries, to financial services, including affordable credit, and their integration into value chains and markets o By 2030, upgrade infrastructure and retrofit industries to make them sustainable, with increased resource-use efficiency and greater adoption of clean and environmentally sound technologies and industrial processes, with all countries taking action in accordance with their respective capabilities o Enhance scientific research, upgrade the technological capabilities of industrial sectors in all countries, in particular developing countries, including, by 2030, encouraging innovation and substantially increasing the number of research and development workers per 1 million people and public and private research and development spending 6

LEARNING AND KNOWLEDGE DEVELOPMENT FACILITY (LKDF) PROMOTES INDUSTRIAL SKILLS DEVELOPMENT IN DEV. C S. Key Facts: LKDF is an umbrella to several PPDPs: LKD Facility was initiated by the Swedish International Development Agency (Sida) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). LKDF s mission is to equip youth in developing countries and countries in transition with industrial skills and know-how. Thereby LKDF aims to counteract unemployment and poverty. LKDF s mission is to establish, in partnership with global manufacturing companies, training academies for the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment in order to expand access of youth to labor markets. ENHANCING THE QUALITY OF INDUSTRIAL POLICIES (EQuIP) Joint GIZ/UNIDO project Supports policymakers in developing countries to formulate and design evidence based strategies for inclusive and sustainable industrial development. Seeks to answer key questions: How is our industrial sector performing relative to competitors? Where is there potential for expansion, upgrading, employment generation or enhanced energy efficiency in our industrial sector? How diversified and embedded is our industry? Phase 1 (completed): Diagnostic toolbox (plus training materials: E- Learning course) offers stakeholders a range of methodologies to consider for industrial diagnosis and strategy design. Phase 2 (ongoing): Enriching toolbox on specific policy instruments and institutional requirements for effective industrial policy implementation. http://www.equip-project.org/ 15

NEW INITIATIVE: UN system established a technology facilitation mechanism (TFM) to advance science, technology and innovation (STI) policies and measures UNIDO = core member of UN Interagency Task Team on STI; purpose: to advance TFM Proposal: establishment of capacity building facility, including global data platform, on industry-related aspects in SDGs.
