School of Oncology The Christie International School of Oncology Specialist Oncology Education and Training

Welcome Welcome to The Christie International School of Oncology, which is attached to the world renowned The Christie NHS Foundation Trust. The Christie School of Oncology is in the unique position of having many years of experience of delivering education to organisations in the UK and overseas. This enables us to work alongside clients to develop programmes which can support improvements in cancer care, treatment and research. This booklet has been developed to provide key information to international clients on how The Christie School of Oncology can support improvements in cancer care and service delivery in your organisation through our extensive education and training programme. If you would like to discuss how The School can support your education requirements, then please contact us. We look forward to hearing from you. Professor Richard Cowan Dr Catherine Heaven

About The Christie NHS Foundation Trust The Christie is a UK based comprehensive cancer centre. Founded in Manchester in 1887, The Christie leads the world in developing cancer treatments, producing the very first international guidelines for radiation treatment. In the late 1930s Christie clinicians pioneered biological dosimetry in children, and for over 100 years led the world in developing new treatments for breast cancer. The Christie s work led to the development of bone marrow transplantation, and was the first centre in the world to use image guided radiotherapy. The Christie continues to build on its world firsts, pioneering peritoneal tumour surgery, making advances in robotic surgical techniques, and delivering a world renowned immunotherapy programme for renal cancers and melanoma. It is now the UK s largest brachytherapy and molecular radiotherapy centre, is home to the country s largest experimental cancer medicine group and, in 2018, will be the first centre in the UK to provide proton therapy.

World leading research The Christie is one of the world s leading experimental cancer medicine centres, and an international leader in research and development. The research portfolio includes a range of drug trials across all phases. This groundbreaking research is made possible through the support of a range of partnerships, and specialist research facilities. The Christie has one of the largest trials portfolios in the UK with over 600 active clinical trials. The Christie works closely with The University of Manchester and Cancer Research UK to take research from the laboratory to clinical trials with patients. This research has been officially ranked best in the UK. Complementing the drug trials, the newly formed Christie Patient Centred Research (CPCR) group conducts research to improve the experience and outcomes of those affected by cancer including friends and family. Led by a joint Chair in Nursing, with The University of Manchester, the CPCR group aims to develop international collaborations to conduct patient-centred cancer research that includes the personal, social and psychological factors related to illness and experiences of health care.
