23rd Annual Ram Auction Friday 22nd September, 2017, starting at 1.00pm on the property Ramsay Park 69 White Suffolks, 24 Suffolk/Black Composites Peter & Julie Button, Minlaton Phone: (08) 8853 2130 Mobile: 0419 842 246 www.ramsaypark.com.au Welcome to the 2017 Ramsay Park Studs Ram Sale The Ramsay Park White Suffolk Stud was established in 1997 and since then we have continually sourced the best genetics available to help improve the quality and consistency of our flock. In 2010 we started our Black Composite breeding program, combining the carcass qualities of a Hampshire Down with the clean points of a Suffolk. Our aim at Ramsay Park is to produce well-muscled, functional, paddock reared flock rams, with a balance of visual and genetic qualities. We have been involved in showing stock at Royal and country shows since 1994 and see this as an important part of our stud s program, helping us to gauge our progress against the top studs in Australia for type and genetic gains. The 2017 show and sale season to date has seen Ramsay Park have its most successful year in history. This year at the Royal Adelaide Show the Ramsay Park White Suffolk sire (166023) was awarded the Senior Champion Ram, Grand Champion White Suffolk Ram and then went on to be sashed the Supreme White Suffolk Exhibit of the Show. Eight ribbons were won in total from a team of thirteen White Suffolk Sheep, highlighting the consistency of our breeding program at Ramsay Park. Another highlight was achieved in the Elite Sale, where RP166023 was sold for the sale top price of $17,000 and second entry RP166163 sold for $10,500. This gives us the confidence to continue with our breeding objectives into the future. To keep improving our genetic base, we are constantly sourcing top sires or use artificial insemination. The use of AI enables us to use the best genetics which would otherwise be unavailable to us and has helped in the rapid growth of our stud. Our flock is now back in Market Assurance program with an MN2 status. The flock is tested Brucellosis Free and Lambplan tested. These are being used to mate a cross section of our ewes to breed a Black Composite hybrid sire to have a mix of Hampshire carcase and clean points of the Suffolk. Our aim at this stage is to produce stock with no more than 75% of either breed to maximise crossbred vigour in their progeny. PHOTOGRAPHS Left: Sire - Telpara 080065 Right: Black Composite lambs

Ramsay Park 166023 sold at RAHS Elite Sale to Kolindale White Suffolk Stud, WA, for $17,000. Ramsay Park 166163 sold at RAHS Elite Sale to Koonawarra Studs, Angaston, for $10,500. TIPS TO REMEMBER ABOUT LAMBPLAN EBVs 1. For most commercial operations, BETTER GROWTH is vital. Rams must have +ve EBVs for weight. 2. The importance of Fat and Muscle EBVs depends on how the lambs will be sold and at what weight. For trade lambs sold in saleyards, fat and muscle are not so important. For heavier lambs sold via Value-based Marketing (contacts, grids etc.), fat and muscle are very important. 3. Indexes are a guide - you must see the buyer or talk to your ram supplier to get the right EBVs 4. Every 1kg EBV for weight is worth 0.25-0.33kg extra carcase weight: $125-$150 extra over the life of a ram. 5. The 3 Ts - Teeth, Testicles and Toes. Rams must have sound mouths, two functional firm testicles, and four clean strong feet and toes. TRAITS THAT DEFINE THE VALUE OF TERMINAL SIRES The skill in selecting terminal sires for lamb production is to identify those sires that have desirable genes that produce lambs with high growth rate, low fat (lean) and better carcase conformation. At present, we cannot directly measure the genes of an animal. LAMPLAN can, however, provide an estimate of the value of a sire s genes by looking at his own performance for certain traits and that of his relatives. This estimate is called an Estimate Breeding Value (EBV). For terminal sires there are three main traits to concentrate on. These are: Post weaning weight (PWWT) - this describes the animal s genetic merit growth rate. A positive EBV means the animal s progeny will be genetically faster growing, ie. they reach market weight at an earlier age. Post weaning fat (PFAT) - this describes the value of each animal s genes for fat depth at constant weight. A negative EBV means that an animal s progeny will be a genetically leaner animal. Post weaning eye muscle depth (PEMB) - this describes the value of each animal s genes for eye muscle depth at constant weight. A positive EBV means a genetically thicker-muscled animal, and one that will have slightly more of its lean tissue in higher-priced cuts.
