UNDESA ENERGY GRANT 1. Best Practices and Experiences Need to disseminate best practices, experiences and lessons learned on sustainable development and in particular in relation to energy 2. The Partnership and Programme Need for advancing implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development through international partnerships The UNDESA China Energy Fund Committee Partnership created the UNDESA Energy Grant Programme in 2014 3. The Grant Offers a Grant for One Million US Dollars annually to fund future capacity development activities for the 2015-2019 years. 3

2015 Grant Priorities Grant Priority for the first year was the Energy SDG (SDG 7) and its three core targets SDG 7: Ensure Access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all Target 7.1: By 2030, ensure universal access to affordable, reliable and modern energy services Target 7.2: By 2030, increase substantially the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix Target 7.3: By 2030, double the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency 6

2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development The 2030 Agenda was approved in September 2015 by the UN General Assembly The main component is a set of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 169 corresponding Targets to be accomplished by 2030 SDG 7: Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all Global Indicator Framework with over 220 indicators to monitor progress on implementation of the 17 SDGs The UN High Level Political Forum (HLPF) is the central platform for the follow up and review of the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs 7

2015 Winner: We Care Solar Proposal: Saving Mothers and Newborns in Childbirth with Solar Power; Scaling to the Next Level Based on the Solar Suitcase designed for child birth situations A practical and already proven solution to lack of electricity during child birth Objectives include: Upgrading the solar suitcase technology Expanding the outreach programme Incorporating remote monitoring 14

Powering the Future We Want Energy for Sustainable Transport 2030 Agenda does not include a Sustainable Development Goal on Transport SDG 11 on Sustainable Cities include a target related to Sustainable Transport Target 11.2: By 2030, provide access to safe, affordable, accessible and sustainable transport systems for all, improving road safety, notably by expanding public transport, with special attention to the needs of those in vulnerable situations, women, children, persons with disabilities and older persons. 16

Proposed Criteria Based on past and current activities in five categories: 1. Leadership, vision and commitment 2. Improvement in standards of living society at large or particular communities 3. Contribution to sustainable transport 4. International cooperation in energy for sustainable transport and capacity building 5. Promoting the integration of clean energy into sustainable development strategies And future implementation of the Grant under one category: 6. Impact, Sustainability, Monitoring and Implementation It refers to well-defined proposals with built-in mechanisms for implementation, monitoring, evaluation, budget outline and 17 reporting
