Summary The goal of is to assist deserving high school seniors in their first year of college and to promote community banking. The scholarship is named after long-time CBA Chief Executive Officer, the late Julian Hester and his late daughter, Jan Hester. Jan was a senior at the University of Georgia when she died in an auto accident on April 15, 1990. In addition to supporting community banking, this scholarship is an opportunity to pass on the positive qualities both Julian and Jan Hester exemplified to further the development of tomorrow s generations. 1. Open to Georgia high school seniors who will be entering a Georgia university, college, or technical institute (if program is two or more years) in the fall semester of 2015. Scholarship funds will be awarded to another student if student does not start that semester. 2. Requirements: a) Complete Application b) Complete Activity Record c) Complete Essay d) Complete Qualifications (1 Page Completed by a Teacher) e) Complete High School Transcript (and SAT and/or ACT Scores if available) 3. Awards are based on academic merit, not financial need. 4. Four (4) $1,000 scholarships funded by the (CBA) and its membership will be awarded. 5. Scholarship funds are paid by the CBA directly to the college, university or technical institute to an account in the student s name to be applied toward tuition, books and expenses. 6. The CBA recommends that a local community bank also award an additional scholarship to its individual applicant; however, the bank is not required to do this. 7. All winning or selected applicants from each community bank will be forwarded to the CBA office for review and will be presented to the Julian & Jan Hester Memorial Scholarship committee. 8. The Judging Committee of CBA member banks and Associate Member companies will meet and determine four (4) applicants chosen to receive the scholarships. A notice of the applicants chosen will be mailed to the sponsoring community bank president. The four (4) award recipients will be notified by the CBA and the sponsoring bank. 9. Any award not utilized may, at the Committee s discretion, be used to increase the number of awards for the next year, or the scholarship may be awarded to one of the semifinalists. 1

2015 Application Fund is supported by the (CBA), its membership and supported in part by CBA s Financial Managers Forum Dinner Series. Conditions of Award All Georgia high school seniors are eligible to compete for this scholarship if they are planning to enter a Georgia university, college, or technical institute (two-year program or more) in the fall semester of 2015, following their high school graduation (applicant must be a full-time student). Recipients will be named solely on the basis of merit; family financial need is not a consideration. To be considered for this award, the following items must be received by your Community Bank President on or before Friday, April 3, 2015: 1. application from the applicant, including an essay on community banking 2. The Candidate s Activity Record 3. The Candidate s Qualification Sheet from one Mathematics, Science or Humanities teacher 4. The Applicant s high school transcript (and SAT or ACT scores if available) from the high school counselor After the application deadline, complete applications will be reviewed and evaluated based on the following criteria: A. High school record/transcript B. SAT and/or ACT scores (nationally administered test no later than November 2014) C. Qualification statement from a high school teacher D. Candidate s essay on community banking E. Candidate s Activity Record listing leadership positions, activities, honors and awards Each local community bank will choose one semi-finalist from applications received from the community and one semifinalist from applications received from bank employees and their families. These applications will be forwarded to the, where finalists will be chosen. The four (4) award recipients will be notified by the and the sponsoring bank. The winners will be announced in May 2015. Award Value Four (4) scholarships of $1,000 each are awarded annually. The scholarship will be sent directly to the recipient s chosen college, university or technical institute to an account in the student s name, to be applied toward tuition, books and expenses. The scholarship honors Julian and Jan Hester as described in the enclosed packet of information. In addition, the scholarship fund introduces and promotes a better understanding of the role played by the community banks in Georgia.
