International Cooperation
Why Collaborate Canada and the EU have strong relations and are powerful players in terms of industrial, technology, and R&D capability Growing need for international cooperation to address complex scientific challenges by collaborating in highcost projects or research infrastructures Creation of global research and innovation networks enables working with the best in the world increasingly interlinked internationally, in a landscape that is changing rapidly By sharing knowledge and resources, we raise the quality of research addressing the greatest challenges on both sides of the Atlantic

European R&I Programs Open to Canadians Canadians can participate in the following collaborative R&I programs: Horizon 2020 European Union s multi-year (2014-2020) framework program for research and innovation. Supports curiosity-driven, high-impact scientific research, technology demonstration and application-driven innovation through calls for proposals. Also supports researcher exchanges. Canadians can participate (as Third Country) in Horizon 2020 projects, and in some cases receive EU funding. New International Partner category EUREKA An intergovernmental network of funding agencies from 40 countries that support international R&D collaboration. Supports industrial, marketdriven innovation mainly performed by small medium enterprises (SMEs) National Research Council (IRAP) is Canada s national contact point.
Examples of Canada-EU Cooperation
Galway Declaration on Atlantic Ocean Cooperation Canada joined forces with the EU and US in May 2013 through the Galway Declaration and agreed to create the Atlantic Ocean Research Alliance (AORA). A platform to formally engage in dialogue on joint science priorities and programming in support of the sustainable management of the North Atlantic and Arctic Ocean. Working Groups established to align priorities, research infrastructure and funding for Arctic and Marine research and innovation. One outcome is preferred access for Canadian researchers to key parts of Horizon 2020 (e.g. Targeted calls for proposals under Blue Growth ).
European Research Council (ERC) Implementing Arrangement with Canada s granting councils Signed in Brussels on October 27, 2016. Facilitates collaboration through short-term visits (up to 1 year) of leading Canadian researchers to Europe to work with ERC-grant holders. Canadian participants are holders of Canada Research Chairs (CRC) and Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships. Strong interest from both sides Over 350 ERC grantees expressed interest in hosting Canadian researchers Over 150 CRCs and Banting Fellows responded.
CIHR in EU Joint Programming and Multilateral Initiatives CIHR is very active in P2Ps and PPPs with the EU, EU Member States, non-eu partners and private sector funding partners in health ST&I. Allows CIHR to align and leverage funding and programming to address health challenges Provides Canadian researchers access to more resources and partners from participating European and international programs. Canada-EU coordinated call for proposals in Aeronautics In 2011-2013, CANNAPE brought together Canadian and European funders and industry to explore stronger cooperation in aeronautics ST&I. Resulted in the creation of the Canadian Aerospace Research and Innovation Consortium (CARIC) to manage a Canada-EU coordinated call for projects in aeronautics. CARIC and the European Commission launched a coordinated call at the end of 2014, with the selection taking place in June 2015. Three approved joint projects were announced in February 2, 2016: 1. AMOS 2. EPICEA 3. PHOBIC2ICE
