84th Annual Hyundai Sun Bowl Friday, December 29, 2017 Sun Bowl Stadium, El Paso, Texas From The Executive Director Greetings! We don t call ourselves the Sun Bowl Association for nothing. That bright star in the sky has been heating things up in El Paso this summer and I hope all of you have found a way to stay cool. Be assured the 100 degree temperatures have not slowed the Association down as we continue to work some of our big events. One hundred and eighty teams braved the heat to participate in the 18th Annual Academy Sports + Outdoors Sun Bowl International Soccer Tournament. The event brought teams from as far as Albuquerque, NM, Los Lunas, NM, Chihuahua, Mexico, Juarez, and of course, all the soccer leagues from El Paso. I would like to thank all of you who volunteered for the soccer tournament. I know the temperatures were high, but there is no way we could have put on an event of that magnitude without your help. Also on our agenda was the 19th Annual Helen of Troy Sun Court Charm Camp. One-hundred and fifty middle school young ladies listened to and participated in lectures by local guest speakers on careers, education, self-esteem, etiquette, and were even treated to a fashion show by Dillard s Department Store. The event culminated with a nice dinner prepared on site along with a gift bag full of hair products from Helen of Troy, and a pearl jewelry set from Johnson s Jewelers. Thank you to our sponsors and volunteers that help make all of our events successful. As August rapidly sneaks up, football season is also approaching and the staff is preparing for another great Hyundai Sun Bowl, along with our heavy schedule of fall events. Beginning in November, the Sun Bowl All-America Golf Classic will have a new format this year, so stay tuned for the details. The FirstLight Federal Credit Union Thanksgiving Day Parade will follow two days later. Soon after, the WestStar Don Haskins Basketball Invitational will take place right before Christmas, and the Fan Fiesta presented by El Paso Live will precede the Hyundai Sun Bowl Game. As you can see, it is a pretty exciting remainder of the year, but with the help of all of our volunteers, the staff is definitely up to the task. Make plans to gather family, friends, and co-workers to attend these upcoming Sun Bowl Association events. For additional information, contact us 915-533-4416 or at www.sunbowl.org, or connect with us at these social media locations. Til next time, Bernie Olivas Executive Director Sun Bowl Association TEAMS ANNOUNCED FOR 56TH ANNUAL WESTSTAR BANK DON HASKINS SUN BOWL INVITATIONAL The Sun Bowl Association and WestStar Bank are pleased to announce the teams coming to El Paso for the 56th Annual WestStar Bank Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational, which will be held in the Don Haskins Center, Thursday and Friday, Dec. 21-22. The four-team tournament includes North Carolina-Wilmington, North Dakota State, Howard University and UTEP. This marks the first appearance for UNCW and Howard, the second showing for NDSU and of course the Miners have played in every tournament. We are thrilled about this year s field. We are hoping to continue our plan of bringing in the best teams we can find, Sun Bowl basketball committee chairman Barry Kobren said. Two of our Social Media Remember to follow the Hyundai Sun Bowl on the major platforms of Social Media. Fans can stay up-to-date on Facebook (Hyundai Sun Bowl), Twitter (@HyundaiSun- Bowl), Instagram (@HyundaiSunBowl) and Snapchat (sunbowl2015). teams from last year went on to win their conferences and play in the NIT. We think we will see that same success again this year. Akron won the 2016 WestStar Bank Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational by defeating UC-Irvine in game one and beating Maryland Eastern Shore in the title game. Akron went on to win the MAC regular season title and made it to the second round of the NIT, while UC-Irvine won the Big West Conference regular season title and also made it to the second round of the NIT. This tournament has become a tradition and the history of teams and players that have come through El Paso is tremendous, Sun Bowl Association Executive Director Bernie Olivas said. Our basketball committee, which is led by Barry Kobren, continues to seek out and work towards bringing quality teams to the Haskins Center and El Paso. The Academy Sports + Outdoors Sun Bowl Soccer Tournament The Academy Sports + Outdoors Sun Bowl Soccer Tournament was held June 10-11 at the Westside Sports Complex with 180 teams participating. Although the days were hot, the competition was even hotter! Teams from all El Paso, Juarez, Las Cruces, N.M., Alamogordo, N.M. and Lubbock, Texas gathered on the Westside of El Paso to play the sport that is loved so much in the Southwest Region of the United States. We had an amazing turnout and an exceptional group of young ladies to interview. The 2017 Sun Court Coronation is scheduled for Friday, July 28 at the El Paso Country Club. Coronation has been part of the Sun Bowl since the first-ever college Sun Bowl game was played in 1936. Coronation played a huge social role in the Sun Carnival, the week-long pageantry associated with the Sun Bowl. According to the 1938 Sun Bowl game program, The social side of the Sun Carnival centers around the Coronation of the Sun Queen with Ladies-In-Waiting and her Royal Court of Princesses from all the cities of the Sun Empire and the Grand Ball tendered by the Association in honor of Her Majesty and Court. In the early years of the coronation, about 30 young women were part of the formal coronation, and each participant represented an organization. Today, from five-to-nine or more individuals are chosen for the court, including one queen. Selection is based on poise, appearance, personality, communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to demonstrate knowledge of El Paso. Contestants must be enrolled as full-time students. The Sun Court serves as ambassadors for the city of El Paso. They volunteer at various community events and make appearances at the Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic, First- Light Federal Credit Union Sun Bowl Parade, WestStar Bank Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational, Hyundai Sun Bowl Game, Academy Sports + Outdoors Sun Bowl International Soccer Tournament, the Helen of Troy Sun Court Charm Camp and other events throughout the year.
