4 MARKET OVERVIEW The latter stages of 2016 and the early stages of 2017 have brought positive changes for the IT market in Dublin, and in Ireland as a whole. This is also the year Archer celebrates its 10th year of being at the heart of the IT market. And as Archer Recruitment considers where it came from and looks to the future and the new opportunities it presents, the Dublin IT market is full of possibilities too. Ireland may be a small country but remains a popular destination for major global companies in many different sectors, in turn attracting talent from countries across the world to live and work here. Salaries are on the rise generally. But this varies across the sector, with some sections of the IT jobs market experiencing more growth in this regard, while growth in other markets levels off or remains as is. Candidate availability varies too, with some candidate-shy sectors experiencing higher levels of salary growth in the effort to attract talent. Candidates generally are looking for opportunities for career progression and exposure to new tools and technologies that will allow them to stay competitive in a fast-changing sector. This requires an investment on the company s part in nurturing talent, and more and more companies are willing to make this investment to ensure they have the skills they need.
IT JOBS MARKET DUBLIN Salary Survey April 17 5 APPLICATION & SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT In recent times, there has been a distinct shift towards more permanent roles in the hiring market, with a slight decrease in the number of contract positions coming onstream. With more demand for skilled developers out there, there has been a concurrent increase in the salary rates developers are able to demand. With most demand coming from companies in the Financial sector, Insurance industry and of course software houses, the key skills being searched out are Java, and JavaScript related frameworks such as Angular and React. Angular2 is gaining a lot of ground in the marketplace and a lot of movement can be seen in the mobile development space, particularly with Android. IT JOBS MARKET DUBLIN Salary Survey April 17 6 APPLICATION & SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT In the.net market, the ground is shifting. That s on both the company and candidate side, with MS technologies more in demand from hiring companies and, perhaps as a response to the greater number of opportunities, more.net Developers either moving jobs or open to considering a move. The increase in salaries isn t huge but it is noticeable and trending upwards. With Developers feeling good about the level of opportunity in the market, companies are more willing to negotiate for the right talent and ultimately to pay more for it too. What does the right talent look like in this space? Strong C#.NET and SQL skills are a given, and MVC and Agile experience are attractive too. The old stereotype of a coder who just sits behind the screen holds less sway soft skills like good communication and comfort working in a team are a draw for a company too. On the company side, frontend skills are being sought after. But interestingly, these skills are sometimes not so easy to find. Developers generally prefer the backend, working with C#.NET and SQL Server. JavaScript or AngularJS skills are being looked for but Developers can feel that a role requiring these skills is not really a.net role, and might be better suited to JavaScript or Front End Developers. In a market where candidates have more options, it s important for hiring companies to keep an open mind and facilitate cross training to ensure their skills needs are being met.

IT JOBS MARKET DUBLIN Salary Survey April 17 8 BUSINESS ANALYSIS Salaries here are increasing as the economy grows, also driven by employers seeking out specific technical skills that add business value. Something of a convergence is opening up between Junior and Senior level professionals too. While Junior BAs with less than 3 years experience are less in demand and therefore seeing less of an increase in salary terms, higher levels of growth can be seen among the Senior ranks. Top earners include Senior Business Systems Analysts and those with Agile software product experience. The most important skills sought out by hiring companies are core BA skills such as communication, stakeholder management and writing effective business requirements documentation. Agile experience, Software Product background, Database knowledge such as SQL, Lean and process skills all of these are sought after skills too and an advantage for the BA on the lookout for the next opportunity. One of the more noticeable emerging trends in this space is the increasing number of Product Owner roles, often blended positions with a Business Analyst bent.

IT JOBS MARKET DUBLIN Salary Survey April 17 14 QA & TESTING QA and Testing is one of the most important stages of the software development process and this is reflected in the growth of its jobs market. In this space, a handful of changes are converging to drive salaries upwards. With most organisations looking to move towards automation testing, the focus in terms of recruitment is to find strong manual testers with exposure to the automation space or encouraging candidates to explore the opportunity that automation testing represents. This is currently a strongly candidate-driven market, with the most qualified people enjoying multiple options for their next job opportunity, putting them in a stronger negotiating position. This trend is encouraging manual testers to upskill and learn automation. Some are doing this on their own terms with courses in automation technologies like Selenium, which remains the automation tool of choice. Candidates are also seeking out jobs that allow them to increase their test automation skills. From the perspective of the hiring company, important attributes in a potential hire include passion for the QA space, a willingness to learn and upskill, Agile experience with a meticulous nature and strong attention to detail being a given in the QA space too. In recent times companies have become more willing to facilitate hiring people from abroad, due to this being a candidate-shy market.

IT JOBS MARKET DUBLIN Salary Survey April 17 16 INFRASTRUCTURE The rise of Cloud Engineering and Automation can be clearly felt in the IT Infrastructure space. With typical System Administration roles incorporating more and more DevOps-oriented technologies, companies are on the lookout for skilled candidates, while candidates are looking for roles with exposure here. Hiring companies have a distinct set of requirements for candidates. In general, a broad skill base that includes System Administration and DBA carries a strong appeal, along with familiarity with AWSbased infrastructure, knowledge of deployment and configuration automation tools (e.g. Puppet, Chef, Ansible) and experience with version control (GIT, SVN, CVS). With a tighter candidate market resulting, salaries have increased accordingly for the right candidates.
