Summer Study Abroad Program 2018 - PURPAN Toulouse, France FAQ Sheet Where should I register? You have to apply through your home university, most of the time through the International Relations Office or the Study Abroad Office. Where can I find information about the program? Through your home university (IRO, Study Abroad Office) On the PURPAN website: http://purpan.fr And https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kfpko1d7lhy What is the deadline to register? Check with your university Applications should arrive at PURPAN March 15, 2018. What is the cost of the program? 2018 program fees are 2575 Euros, with or without internship. Check with your home university for total cost (program fees + tuition fees etc.) What does this program fees include? It includes accommodation, food, local transportation, insurance, and other expenses (like airport pickup, some cultural excursions and organized outings, field trips, academic materials, organization of the internship ) during the on-campus program. It does not include airfare, personal expenses (leisure, free weekend ), passport fees, home university fees and costs. Whom do I pay the registration fees? Usually to your university but sometimes the universities prefer that you pay PURPAN directly by wire transfer. Check with your home university coordinator. When can I arrive? You may arrive as early as Saturday, May 26 th 2018 since the accommodation will only be available and covered by the program fees from May, 26 th. When does the program end? The on campus part of the program ends on June 22 nd, 2018 at 6:00 pm. If you do the internship, the program will end on July 20 th, 2018 at 6:00 pm. When can I leave? If you do the internship, you will be allowed to leave on Friday, 20 th 2018 from 6:00 pm or the following day, Saturday 21 st 2018. How to reach Toulouse? The most convenient way is to arrive by plane at Toulouse-Blagnac airport. You can also arrive by train at Toulouse-Matabiau train station. What should I do when I arrive in Toulouse? Pick up service will be organized upon arrival in Toulouse and our Program Assistants will drive you directly to your accommodation place. You will be contacted in advance to plan your picking up. Where do I go the 1 st day of class? Our program assistants will accompany you to your classroom from your accommodation place. The meeting time and place will be communicated upon arrival. Are my meals organized? Meals and/or stipends for cooking your own meals will be provided. Picnics will be provided during field visits and organized weekends. Should I bring bedsheets? No, we will provide bedsheets, a blanket, a pillow and a pillowcase. Should I bring some towels? Yes, otherwise you will have to buy some at your arrival. Can I have my weekends free? During the on-campus we organize 2 weekends: You are required to participate in both weekends. o The 1 st one, you will go to hike in the Pyrenees Mountains (easy walk ; 2 to 3 hours). o The 2 nd weekend, will be devoted to the visit of Barcelona (Spain). You have only one weekend free among the four weekends of the on campus part of the program. You can use this weekend for visiting any place you want. The 4 th weekend, you will join your internship place.. How will I be assessed? Depending on the subject; the evaluations may be a written evaluation (a paper on one issue tackled during the week), a multiple-choice questions or an oral presentation. How many credits will I get for this program? You will get 12 ECTS (European Credits) for the whole summer program and only 9 ECTS if you take only the on-campus part of the program. Check with your home university for the equivalence in US credits, and how these credits will be transferred towards your degree. PURPAN International Relations 2/4 2017/10/16
When will I receive my transcript of records? Usually PURPAN sends the transcripts of records directly to the SSAP coordinator of your home university in September. However, special situations will be considered. Where will I live during the on-campus program? You will be living in a students residence: the ICAM-Purpan House (walking distance from the school). You will be sharing a flat of 7 individual rooms (15m² each), with individual bathroom (shower & toilets), & also share the kitchen & living room with other students (male & female). Is there something to pay for the Residence? The accommodation is included in the program fee but you will have to pay a Security Deposit upon arrival (during the first week) of 150 in cash. As you do not have a bank account in France, you will have to pay this amount in cash. A special time will be scheduled during the first day of class for collecting the money from you and forward it to the Residence. Shall we get the deposit back? Yes, but only if everything is in order (if your room has been cleaned-up and nothing is damaged): at your check-out, if you do not do the internship, at the end of the debriefing on July 20 th if you do the internship. Is the students residence near PURPAN? It takes 10 to 15 minutes to get to PURPAN by walking. The residence is about 700 meters from the school. Can I connect all my electric devices in France? Yes, but do not forget to bring an adapter because the European electric plugs are different from the American electric plugs. Can I connect my laptop or tablet to internet via WiFi? Yes. But in some places, there is no WIFI. Be sure you have a network cable adapter, especially if you have a tablet. Network cables (RJ 45) will be provided by us. Where can I wash my clothes? There is a laundry in the students residence and laundry detergent and washing and drying coins will be provided. Are there any stores around the student residence? Near the students residence, there is a pharmacy, doctors, nurses and a bakery. There is also a supermarket in the area that you can reach by bus. PURPAN International Relations 3/4 2017/10/16
Bus services and access to the tram are very close. Buses run every 10 minutes to the subway station and into the city centre. There is a tramway stop 200m from PURPAN that goes also to the subway station Arènes. An unlimited transportation pass on buses, tram and metro is included in your program fees. When will I know my internship place? In the aim to choose the best possible place for your internship, we need to know about you a bit more than the short presentation of your cover letter (your wishes and your personality). This takes some time and you will therefore have all the information about your internship place the 3 rd week of the program. When can I leave my internship? You may leave your internship place on Thursday, July 19 th as you will give an oral presentation of your internship on Friday, July 20 th with all the students participating in the program. Your travel from your internship place to Toulouse will be planed and payed by PURPAN. Will my host family speak English? Most families speak English or know a few words, and at least their children speak some English. Additionally, you will stay in touch with us over Facebook in case you need help to express yourself for urgent or important issues. Will I have an internet connection during my internship? Yes. There is internet throughout France, except in very remote areas of the country. Will I have my own room during my internship? Yes, you will be accommodated in your own room but most of the time, you will have to share the bathroom and the toilets with your host family. Will I be able to travel on weekends during my internship? During your internship, weekends will be organized in harmony with your family: some will want to show you around, others will have professional obligations; we shall inform them that you might want to take advantage of your stay in France to visit places, but maybe not every weekend (!)! It will be up to you to work things out with your family. Will board and lodging be provided when I return to Toulouse, after my internship? Yes, you will be accommodated in a students residence, different from the one where you lived in June. The lunch, on July 20 th, will be provided by PURPAN. SUMMER STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM 2018 PRACTICAL INFORMATION Dates on-campus program: Monday*, May 28 th to Friday, June 22 nd 2018 *may arrive as early as Saturday, May 26 th Accommodation will be available from May 26 th, you will be picked up from your arrival place in Toulouse and taken to the student residence hall internship program: Monday, June 25 th to Friday, July 20 th 2018 (July 20 th on-campus debriefing) Students will be allowed to leave Toulouse on Friday, July 20 st evening from 6:00 pm after the on-campus debriefing, or the following day, Saturday, July 21 st. If they do not do an internship, they can leave on Saturday, June 23 rd. Program offer 4-week on-campus program (9 European credits) or 8-week program if internship taken (12 European credits) ON-CAMPUS PROGRAM (9 European credits): a 4-week intensive course in English, with field visits Week 1: European Culture & Agricultural Economics 1,5 European credit Week 2: European Animal Production & Economics 1,5 European credit Week 3 & Week 4: Food Option 3 European credits OR Week 3 & Week 4: Viticulture & Enology option 3 European credits French courses (2 levels at least) 3 European credits Cultural visits of Toulouse & some week-end excursions (The Pyrénées mountains, Barcelona) INTERNSHIP PROGRAM (3 European credits): (follows the on-campus program, cannot be taken on its own) a 4-week placement, in July, on a farm, or within an agri-related business (examples: vineyard, cattle farm, cheese making farm) usually immersion within a family, English speaking or not, also interested in the cultural exchange ; activities together or free at week-ends take part in the everyday tasks on the farm, hands-on experience according to knowledge & experience PURPAN SSAP 2017
Program cost See home institution for total cost (program fee + tuition fee etc.). Purpan Program fee is 2575 EUROS (whether internship or not) Includes: Lodging*, Board*, Local Transport, Insurance**, Other expenses (like some cultural excursions and organized outings, field trips, academic materials, organization of the internship ) during the on-campus program *during on-campus: student Housing with French & American students, Lunch meals at the student restaurant + stipend for other meals (cook your own meals, kitchen shared by up to 7 students); single occupancy room (desk, bathroom, shelves, closet, bed); walk to classes. **AVI International (Premium option) provides coverage for the following risks: medical costs and hospitalization, personal civil liability (damage caused to third-party, material or physical) work accident during the internship on the farm repatriation to the home country This is compulsory in France. Last advantage of AVI is that it covers your students in France and in other European Union countries, since some outings could occur out of France. Moreover, it is very important for the internship, since it will offer the work accident coverage that home insurances usually do not provide.
