Be sure to refer to the online student handbook to familiarize yourself with the criteria expected of the BSN student. Compiling your portfolio should be useful to you in helping you show evidence of your progress toward completion of the BSN degree as well as to help you define and achieve your own professional goals after you graduate. The focus of your portfolio is on your professional progress in your nursing career, and you will want to include sample artifacts as evidence from past and current nursing courses you have taken and that you are currently taking. Students may choose to submit a paper based portfolio or an electronic portfolio. Your peers? Your patients? Your prospective nursing employer? o What have you learned over the past academic semester/year, and how will you use your knowledge to progress or grow in the future? o What else do you need to do to improve upon your personal growth within this particular program outcome? Tips 1. Choose representative samples, whether graded assignments, faculty feedback, cards or letters from patients, peers, supervisors. Refer to attached Appendix for required assignments to submit (some assignments will only apply to Traditional nursing students). 2. Within each section, have a cover page that describes the contents, that is, provide a few narrative statements to reflect on the content and artifacts you have, and how you are changing or growing as you work toward meeting your goals of a BSN degree. 3. If using journals or reflections, supervisors observations, and/or other written documents, highlight the sentence or two you want emphasized. 4. If using academic papers as evidence of subject, include a brief abstract to reflect on why you have included that assignment or paper and what it says about you as a professional. Guidelines for Paper Based 1. Use a good quality three ring binder, with dividers to separate each section, such as community activities, clinical practice, etc. 2. Include a Table of Contents that identifies the overall organization of the portfolio. 3. Place multiple pages or otherwise irregularly shaped entries in plastic sleeves or mount within a page. 4. Do not damage any item in order to include it, e.g. avoid folded documents. 5. Arrange the portfolio in a way that makes it easy for you and the reviewers to identify the goals you set based on the program outcome criteria and your subsequent progress or achievement. 6. should be dynamic and should facilitate ease of addition and subsequent changes as you build on the portfolio from once course to another. 7. Include copies rather than originals in your portfolio. 8. Include a stamped self-addressed envelope to have your portfolio returned to you.
Guidelines for an Electronic 1. Use the approved Google Sites nursing e-portfolio template. The following link will guide you in adding the nursing template. http://offcampus.maine.campusguides.com/ld.php?content_id=36061729 Also: you can view a short video by a professor that gives brief introduction: https://www.umfk.edu/de/orientation/nursing/nursing_portfolio.cfm 2. Attach files that are accessible across systems. Examples would be Adobe PDF files, MP4 files and JPEG files. Plan and organize your overall portfolio so you can show yourself to be the professional you are for the job you want to obtain or the employer or graduate school for which you want to make a favorable impression. When selecting entries, keep in mind that each entry is part of a much larger whole and that together, the sample artifacts and rationale make a powerful statement about you as an individual. Asking the following questions may help with decision making. Questions to ask as you prepare your portfolio: 1. What do I want my portfolio to demonstrate about me as a nurse and a professional? 2. What are my characteristics as a nurse? 3. What have I learned and how is that conveyed in my portfolio? 4. What directions for my future growth and development are evident from my portfolio? 5. What distinguishing remarks have been made by others (teachers, peers, supervisors) about me that could be included? 6. What overall impression do I want to give a reviewer about me as a nurse? 7. What goals do you want to achieve subsequent to completing your BSN degree? Why? Do you have a timeline in mind? What do you need to do and when to achieve these goals? Contact your faculty if you have any questions as you put together your portfolio. Students in the past have said that developing their portfolios is a time consuming but very satisfying project on which to work to learn about one s self in a different way. Take your work seriously, but have fun along the way.
