Essay Competition is intended to develop the skill and general knowledge of the participants to share their ideas of developing Indonesia s petrochemical industry. Contestants are challenged to put their innovative idea in easy-to-read yet informative essay form. This year, contestants will write an essay about developing petrochemical industry through innovation in processing Indonesia's natural resources. If contestants are through to the final round, they will present their idea to the judges. Judges will give some comprehensive questions about the idea presented by finalists. Petrochemicals are chemical products made from the hydrocarbons present in raw natural gas and petroleum crude oil. Petrochemical industry is a very important industry in Indonesia which contributes 3% of Indonesia s GDP. In the petrochemical industry, the organic chemicals produced in the largest volumes are methanol, ethylene, propylene, butadiene, benzene, toluene, and xylenes. Petrochemicals are used to manufacture thousands of products people use every day, like plastics, soaps, fertilizers, electronic equipment, clothing, and a host of others. Petrochemical industry mainly use fossil-based resources such as petroleum, natural gas, and coal raw material. However, the usage of unrenewable resources leads to material scarcities and environmental problems.
As a tropical country, that passed by equator line, Indonesia has a high level of biodiversity. This high level of biodiversity makes Indonesia has an abundant amount of renewable natural resources, which have the potential to be used as raw material in petrochemical industry. However, processing of renewable resources in petrochemical industry is uncommon. Therefore, innovation is needed in processing of renewable resources into petrochemical products. The prospect of this industry in the future is very good and promising. Almost every products of petrochemical industry used in everyday life in considerable quantities. Thus, by using natural renewable resources in Indonesia, Indonesia s petrochemical industry will develop and bring good progress to the country. 1. Participants will be competing individually in this Essay competition. 2. Participants who tookpart in IChEC 2018 Plant Design or Problem Solving are not eligible to join this competition 3. Participants can only submit 1 (one) entry. Multiple entries will not be judged 4. Participants must be undergraduate or vocational program (diploma) students majoring in Chemical Engineering (or Process Engineering) by 2 nd of March 2018. 5. Students under academic sanction are not allowed to participate in this competition 6. Invited participants are students from Southeast Asian countries and beyond 7. Each participant must register according to the rules in the Registration section and complete all the required administration documents 8. All entries and administration documents will become the property of Indonesia Chemical Engineering Challenge 2018 Organizing Committee and will not be returned 9. Essay must have never been commercialized or won any other competitions before. Violation of this rule leads to immediate disqualification 10. The title used for the Registration and Final Report must be the same 11. Essay proposed by the participants must be related to the given theme
1. Participants must register online at http://www.ichecitb.com. The registration will be officially opened on 18 th of September 2017 and will be closed on 5 th of November 2017. 2. Participants will receive notification email containing official registration number within 2 x 24 hours after online registration 3. Participants must attach all the registration documents and email them to ichecitb2018@gmail.com with IChEC2018_ES_XXX as the subject. XXX is the registration number from the notification email.
The required registration documents are: - Essay - Scanned letter from Major Department or University(*.jpg/*.jpeg) stating that participant is currently enrolled as a student in the stated college or university and not under academic sanction - Newest photo (formal, colored, not black and white or grayscale; size 4 cm x 6 cm) of participant (*.jpg/*.jpeg) - Scanned valid student ID card of participant (*.jpg/*.jpeg) All of the required registration documents must be zipped into single file named IChEC2018_ES_XXX.zip (only *.zip file type is approved, maximum file size of 8 MB). These documents must be submitted before 11.59 p.m. (GMT +7) or 23.59 WIB, 29 th of October 2016. Late submissions after the deadline will be penalized.
