Looking to be more active in 4-H? Why not join a 4-H Club? Clubs are the most traditional way of participating in 4-H. Davidson County has five active clubs in our county. Clubs usually meet once a month for fun, education, and fellowship. Most of our clubs are general clubs for all ages. Best part is it s FREE to join! No 4-H Club near you? Why not start up a club in your community? Invite your friends, neighbors, and classmates. All it takes is a dedicated adult leader, at least 5 youth (between the ages of 5-18), and an interest in learning new and exciting things! Clubs can be general (where you can learn about many different things throughout the year), or more project specific (i.e.: a livestock club or robotics club). Clubs can also be formed around youth age (for instance: Cloverbud Clubs for ages 5-8, or teen clubs). calling Potential Club Leaders! 4-H is a wonderful way of giving back to your community by mentoring our youth. Volunteer Club Leaders are trained and supported directly by the county 4-H Agent and have opportunities to work with and learn from other volunteers, not only in our county, but at the district and state level. Ms. Ginger would love to talk to you! Please contact the 4-H Office for more details. Another option Become an At-large member At-Large Members are 4-H members that, for whatever reason, decide not to join a 4-H Club. They are, however, still active in the county 4-H program and work directly with the county 4-H Agent. They are able to participate in the many activities that 4-H offers, including competitions, events, can use 4-H curriculum, participate in fund raisers, etc. At-Large members will need to complete the same enrollment packet as club members. Ask Ms. Ginger for details. New 4-H Club Announcement! Do you have an interest in Livestock? How about Veterinary Science? This may be the club for you! A 4-H Livestock Club is now forming in the Tyro area and is open to any county youth with an interest in Livestock. The first meeting will be on Saturday, September 21 st beginning at 10:00 am at the West Davidson Library. For more info, please call the 4-H office at 242-2086 3

What was YOUR Summer Like? This summer, 4-H offered a wide variety of fun and educational workshops for all ages. We had 170 youth participating in 17 different workshops! We are hoping to grow next summer. Thanks to all the wonderful volunteers who assisted. Check out more photos on our Facebook Page! 4

Brand NEW to Davidson County 4-H The Davidson County 4-H Livestock Show & Sale We are proud to announce that Davidson County 4-H and the Davidson County Cooperative Extension is working on creating a Spring Livestock Show and Sale for county youth to participate in. What makes this different from the County Fair Livestock Show? Youth will have the opportunity to learn greater responsibility. Youth will work directly with animals for several months to prepare them for the show while learning a great deal about the animal. Youth will have the opportunity to earn a larger amount of income from the sale of their animal (perhaps to save for college). It s a great opportunity for youth to learn about good sportsmanship. We are currently working on the official rules and regulations for the show and plan on having it during the month of April 2014. More information will be available soon. Please stay tuned! Like to Cook? Here s an opportunity for you to show off your cooking skills! 4-H members are invited to participate in our annual: FOOD FAIR The Holidays are fast approaching Are you ready? Make cool things in our Holiday Gifts & Goodies Workshop When: Tuesday, November 12 Time: Setup begins at 5:00 pm Judging begins at 6:00 pm Location: Extension Office Auditorium Participant information and registration will be available by October 1 st. Registration applications will be due to the 4-H office by October 15 th. (Registration may be limited due to space restraints.) Join in the Tasty FUN! Mark your Calendars! When: Saturday, December 7 Time: 9:00 am-12:00 pm Location: Extension Office Auditorium Ages: 8-13 Cost: $10.00 (Space will be limited.) Registration will open in November. 5

LEADERS FORUM Greetings! Hope you had a great, relaxing summer! As it comes to an end I know you are thinking about re-starting your clubs for the fall. I m sure you have some great activities planned and I m looking forward to helping any way that I can. During your first meeting, make sure that each member completes a new enrollment packet for this club year. Turn those into the 4-H Office as soon as possible, along with your proposed club plan for the year so we can re-charter your club. Also, be sure to have your club secretary send me a write up about your meeting and the wonderful things your club is doing so I can include it in our county newsletter! Fair time is coming up fast. Be sure to remind your members about entering objects into the fair. Some of the crafts they made during our Summer Fun workshops would be ideal to enter if they wish. This year the fair books are online: www.davidsoncountyfair.com or on our Extension website. To save time, folks can pre-register items online this year. Items will still need to be brought in on Sunday, September 15 th from 2:00 5:00 pm. I m looking forward to a great 4-H Club year with you! If you need any help with anything, please let me know. As always, if you have any questions or concerns about anything, please contact me. Keep up the great work! THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUED SERVICE TO DAVIDSON COUNTY 4-H! 4-H Member Project for August/September Build a Flashlight Have you ever had a flashlight that would not work because the plastic case was broken? With this activity, you will learn that you can create your own flashlight using common household items. This activity is from the 4-H Curriculum Electric 1 Magic of Electricity. YOU WILL NEED: A D-Cell Battery A Incandescent Flashlight Bulb A Piece of Aluminum Foil HOW TO MAKE IT: 1. Cut the aluminum foil into a strip about 2 inches by 6 inches. 2. Fold the foil over and over along the long edge, until you have a piece that is still 6 inches long, but only a quarter of an inch wide. 3. Touch one end of the battery to the bottom end of the bulb, and then connect the side of the bulb to the strip of aluminum foil. 4. Connect the strip of foil to the other end of the battery. You have just built you first circuit! A circuit needs three things: 1. Something to push electrons, (in this case, a battery) 2. A path for the electrons to follow (aluminum foil and light bulb) 3. Something for the electrons to do (like light up a light bulb) By creating this circuit, you have created electricity! If you liked this activity and want to learn more about how electricity works, you would probably enjoy doing an electric project. Your county 4-H Office has project books that you can follow with many fun activities. You can also create a project record and earn the opportunity to attend 4-H Electric Congress! 7
