NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release SINGAPORE 1000 REVENUE DOUBLES IN JUST 6 YEARS 21.7% leap in sales sees combined sales crack S$2 trillion 18 SMEs cross $100 million turnover mark 31 January 2013 [Singapore] The combined sales of Singapore s top companies has cracked the S$2 trillion mark according to the Singapore 1000 ranking released today by DP Information Group (DP Info). The Singapore 1000 ranks the largest and most successful 1,000 companies in Singapore. Together with the Small and Medium Enterprise 1000 (SME1000) and the Singapore International 100 (SI100), the rankings are the most comprehensive audit of the performance of Singapore s corporate sector. The financial results of more than 40,000 companies are analysed to arrive at the final list. The combined sales of Singapore s corporate leaders increased by an impressive 21.7 per cent, from S$1.98 trillion in 2012 to S$2.42 trillion in 2013. According to Ms Chen Yew Nah, Managing Director of DP Info, the S$2 trillion mark is a significant milestone. Cracking the S$2 trillion mark is remarkable given S$1 trillion in sales was only achieved in 2007. And during the last six years the world suffered a major economic crisis. Page 1 of 16

S$2.4 trillion is more than the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of every country in the world except the 10 largest economies. The bulk of the increase in revenue came from the Commerce Wholesale sector, where higher commodity prices including oil have driven up the revenue numbers. With 395 companies in the list, Commerce Wholesale has the largest representation on the Singapore 1000 list. Sales for the sector jumped 31.8 per cent to S$1.6 trillion, of which S$881 billion came from the trade of fuel and related products. PROFITS REMAIN FLAT The record revenue has not translated into record profits. While sales boomed compared to 2012, profits rose by only 2.2 per cent. There was also an increase in the number of loss making companies, from 8 per cent to 10.5 per cent. The Singapore 1000 companies are working harder, but their profits have remained stagnant. In other words, companies have to work harder just to stop their profits from going backwards, Ms Chen explained. The low profit increase shows the impact higher costs are having on the profitability of Singapore s corporate sector. During the ranking period, raw material and oil prices as well as jumps in rents, labour and transport costs all had an impact of the bottom-line of Singapore s leading companies, Ms Chen said. Profit margins continue to be squeezed. In 2013 the gross profit margin fell to 5.8 per cent, compared to 7.0 per cent in 2012 Page 2 of 16

SME 1000 PERFORMANCE The top 1000 SMEs in Singapore generated S$29.4 billion in combined sales, an increase of 11.8 per cent compared to the 2012 rankings. Their combined profit was S$3.4 billion, up by 28.6 per cent compared to last year. Hospitality/F&B companies delivered the biggest leap in combined sales, as they did in 2012. Last year the sector s revenue jumped by 22.3 per cent to S$652.5 million. This year the sector added another 46.7 per cent in revenue, taking its total revenue to S$957.0 billion. This resulted in an 83.1 per cent increase in combined profits. Much of this increase came from the leap in the number of F&B companies making the list from 27 to 34 this year. SME manufacturers are also doing well, with their combined sales jumping by 31.4 per cent. Two SME manufacturing sectors saw their sale more than double compared to last year Chemical Products (156.3 per cent) and Fabrics / Personal Effects (118.0 per cent). The financial strength and resilience exhibited by Singapore SMEs, having battled the volatile and uncertain macroeconomic environment, is a nice breather in view of an overall bearish sentiment. Having worked with SMEs for more than four decades, convenience and a simplified logistics process is what DHL offers to the local SME market when expanding their market beyond local shores. The synergy that DHL has established with local SMEs goes far beyond a customer-vendor relationship. As their trusted partner, we help businesses overcome the hurdles of internationalisation while driving operational and cost efficiencies. Their core competency is their product, ours is logistics, said Herbert Vongpusanachai, Managing Director, DHL Express Singapore. Page 3 of 16

A NEW RECOGNITION GRADUATING SMES Each year a select number of companies perform so well they jump straight from the SME 1000 into the list of the nations biggest companies, the S1000. This year s graduating class consists of 18 companies that made the move from the SME 1000 to the S1000 rankings. To honour these SMEs, DP Info has initiated a special award the Crossing $100 million Turnover SME Award - for the SME that graduates to the S1000 list with largest percentage leap in sales. The winning company must also meet the other ranking requirements such as remaining profitable and meeting all corporate compliance requirements. The Crossing $100 million Turnover SME Award is a fitting recognition for the SMEs that have been able to achieve this milestone by transforming their business, coming up with innovative products and services and leveraging partnerships to break into new markets or expand existing markets. SPRING will continue to help our SMEs develop their capabilities so that they can seize new opportunities to grow from strength to strength, said Mr Tan Kai Hoe, Deputy Chief Executive, SPRING Singapore. The winner of the inaugural Crossing $100 million Turnover SME Award for 2013 is Poet Shipbuilding and Engineering, which delivered a 366.8 per cent increase in revenue to enter the S1000 list. SI100 RECORD OVERSEAS REVENUES The SI100 recognises the 100 companies that generate the most international revenue. Page 4 of 16

The top 100 international companies set a new record for overseas revenue S$207.1 billion, an increase of 6.8 per cent on last year. This surpasses the previous record of S$204.9 billion set in 2010. According to the SI100, China continues to be the most significant trading partner for Singapore firms, accounting for one-third (33.6 per cent) of all international revenue earned. Neighbouring countries in South East Asia account for 20.9 per cent of revenue. In a surprise result, Oceania came in third accounting for 15.3 per cent of international revenue. This shows Singapore firms are finding opportunities in Australia. While the percentage of revenue generated in Europe (11.3 per cent) and the Americas (7.5 per cent) both declined compared to 2012, both regions are still significant trading partners for Singapore. Commenting on the performance of Singapore companies internationally, Mr Kelvin Tan, Managing Director and Head of Commercial Banking at HSBC Singapore said As the volume of intra-regional trade flows continue to rise, the ability to access key overseas markets will become an important consideration for many businesses here. Through these success stories of SMEs which have transformed themselves into global businesses, we hope to encourage Singapore enterprises in the early stages of their overseas venture to boldly pursue their aspirations. The Awards underline our commitment to help Singapore companies successfully grow their businesses both locally and internationally. As a leading international bank in supporting these global aspirations, HSBC is dedicated to helping companies identify new business opportunities, access financial products and services, and keep current with regulatory changes in markets, he said.
