IPA 2016: Made in Africa and the AIF Innovation Ecosystems Connector is already building momentum in Botswana and across the rest of the continent and beyond. Gaborone is the hotspot for anyone who believes that innovation is the gear for positive, productive, sustained economic and social development in Africa. The story behind IPA The 5th IPA event follows on the hugely successful 4th awards event held in May 2015 in Skhirat, Morocco, under the high patronage of his Majesty King Mohammed VI. IPA 2015 was attended by more than 450 innovators and innovation enablers from the agricultural, technology, health, governance and education sectors, including the media and a host of international delegates. Prior to Morocco, IPA was held in Nigeria (2014), South Africa (2013) and Ethiopia (2012), its inaugural launch. Each year, 10 nominees are selected through a rigorous and validated process driven by a competent panel of judges. This is followed by a selection of three winners after facetoface pitching sessions. As winners, they receive a prize share of US$150 000 (US$ 100 000 for the Grand Prize, and US$ 25 000 to each of the two additional winners), with each nominee receiving a $5 000 voucher. There are additional incentives for women and young innovators, key groups who are integral in contributing to the innovation landscape in Africa. The IPA was established in 2011 with the main goal of mobilizing for African innovators and entrepreneurs who deliver marketoriented solutions for Africanled development. The focus of IPA evolved over the last four years and today its purpose is to strengthen African innovation ecosystems and spur growth of marketdriven African solutions to African challenges. IPA is recognised as a platform that connects and forges collaboration between African innovators and innovation enablers to strengthen African innovation ecosystems. The prize also encourages young African men and women to pursue science, technology and engineering careers as well as business opportunities. The prestigious prize is one of the highest accolades on the African continent in the innovation space, focussing on homegrown solutions for Africa by Africans. At AIF, we believe that there is no shortage of talent on the African continent, but resources to fund them are limited. The IPA thus honours and encourages innovative achievements that contribute towards developing new products, increasing efficiency or cost savings in Africa. Welcome to the IPA 2016 edition [Gaborone 2223 June 2016] 2
