WARD MANAGER JOB TITLE: Ward Manager/Specialty Sister SALARY: Band 7 ACCOUNTABLE TO: Head of Nursing Medicine POST SUMMARY Strong, leadership qualities are needed at this level. It is critical to the quality of care, staff morale, and the learning environment. A. Manage, lead and co-ordinate a dedicated team of nursing and support staff to ensure the delivery of a high standard of nursing care. B. The post holder will be responsible for the management of ward/department resources including manpower within an identified allocation. C. The post holder will adhere to NMC Code of Practice at all times and ensure ward compliance with and application of hospital policies and procedures. D. Develop, introduce and evaluate Governance systems in the ward/department relating to Risk Management, Health and Safety and Controls Assurance. E. (The post holder will undertake site coordinator duties in rotation with other Ward Managers). MAIN TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITY 1. DELIVERY OF UP-TO-DATE EVIDENCE BASED CARE TO PATIENTS AND CARERS 1.1 To monitor the practice and effectiveness of nursing actions, ensuring these are carried out with full regard for the safety of the patient and staff involved. 1.2 To ensure that delegation of tasks is performed equitably, effectively, in accordance with the nurse s individual skills, development needs and within clear parameters of responsibility. 1.3 To ensure effective communication within the team and externally throughout the 24 hour period. 1.4 To ensure feedback mechanisms are in place, directing and encouraging as appropriate.
1.5 To provide specialist nursing advice or nursing practice within the ward/department, and provide advice to other wards/departments within the Trust. 1.6 To evaluate the effects of nursing actions and plan improvements for the benefit of the service. 1.7 To identify opportunities for improvement in services and where appropriate implement change process. 1.8 To evaluate benefits and disadvantages of any changes. 2. PROVIDE CLINICAL LEADERSHIP 2.1 To establish direction and purpose, inspire, motivate and empower ward/department team around the common goals to produce real improvements in clinical practice, quality and services. 2.2 To be individually motivated, self aware, socially skilled and able to work across professional and organisational boundaries. 2.3 To facilitate career development of staff members and formulate strategies which support succession planning. 2.4 To establish and maintain a high profile with patients, carers and all staff, involving, advising and using counselling skills as required. 2.5 To deputise for delegated tasks as deemed appropriate by the Senior Nurse Manager. 3. ENSURE THAT TRAINING AND EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES ARE AVAILABLE TO WARD STAFF 3.1 To ensure that preceptorship is available to newly qualified staff. 3.2 To ensure that student nurses have identified mentors. 3.3 To ensure that an induction programme is in place and available to all newly appointed staff. 3.4 Liase with student nurse facilitator, nurse practice developers and APU to ensure that a learning environment is maintained and education audit standards are met. 3.5 Liase with the Directorate Professional lead to ensure that courses are available to support professional and career developments. 4 ENSURE PERSONNEL AND TEAM DEVELOPMENT TO MAXIMISE PERFORMANCE AND SUCCESSION PLANNING 4.1 To assess and select candidates to meet service requirements 4.2 To develop and improve ward/department team through use of appraisal system and PDPs. 4.3 To facilitate training needs analysis in conjunction with hospital and departmental objective. 4.4 To identify the development opportunities for all individuals within ward/department team. 4.5 To facilitate team development by encouraging an environment conducive to development and introduction of positive ideas for change. 4.6 To teach clinical, managerial and interpersonal skills to ward team. 4.7 To promote life long learning. 4.8 Ensure professional regulation is maintained by continued self development. 5. OPERATIONAL MANAGEMENT 5.1 To ensure the accurate compilation of duty rotas to establish an appropriate deployment of manpower and balance of nursing. 5.2 To manage and monitor ward/department budgets within allocated resources, reporting deficiencies/variances to the Senior Nurse/General Manager 5.3 To initiate disciplinary and grievance procedures as appropriate. 5.4 To monitor staff sickness/absence, taking action as appropriate. 5.5 To justify proposals for expenditure on developments to senior manager, by developing rationale to support business planning cycle. 5.6 To obtain and evaluate information to aid decision-making within the ward/department 5.7 To forecast trends and developments which affect service and ward/department objectives based on national/local strategies. 6. MANAGING INFORMATION 6.1 To record, use and store information in accordance with Caldicott and the Data Protection Act (1998). 6.2 To ensure compliance with agreed MDIS standards. 6.3 To ensure staff have knowledge/accesses to the Information for Health Strategy. 6.4 To ensure ward team receive appropriate and timely computer training. 6.5 To ensure that data quality meets the requirements of Trust standards. 6.6 To work towards computerisation of staff/personnel records via the agreed Trust system (One-Staff). 6.7 Promote the use of electronic communication. 7. QUALITY AND CLINICAL GOVERNANCE 7.1 To develop continuous quality initiatives to improve the care of patients. 7.2 To ensure the audit and performance monitoring requirements associated with NSF or national recommendations are met. 7.3 To ensure the appropriate collection, evaluation and dissemination of audit data. Participate in action planning and monitoring as appropriate. 7.4 To be aware of current developments required by the Government and professional bodies and relevant research associated with this. 7.5 To ensure that appropriate risk assessment are undertaken and that agreed action plans have been implemented. 7.6 To ensure compliance with Health and Safety policies and that staff are made aware of any changes. 7.7 To ensure implementation and compliance with relevant controls assurance standards. 8. INFORMATION SECURITY AND CONFIDENTIALITY All person identifiable information must be held in the strictest confidence and must be disclosed only to authorised people in accordance with the 1997 Caldicott recommendations, 1998 Data Protection Act, ratified information sharing protocols and patient consent. Where there is any doubt, the post holder must seek advice from the Caldicott Guardian or deputy. A breach of confidentiality may result in disciplinary action being taken in accordance with the Trust s disciplinary procedure.
