History: The training of girls/women started with the inception of St. Catherine's Hospital, Kanpur in 1898. The Nursing School became formally functional in 1931. Its aim was to train locally situated girls rather than bring in missionaries from abroad, to be caretakers for patients. 1939 saw the introduction of the General Nursing and Midwifery (R.N.R.M.) course in affiliation to United Province [present Uttar Pradesh] State Medical Faculty which continued till 1985. In the same year, the Uttar Pradesh government gave St. Catherine's Hospital grant to set up an Auxiliary Nurse Midwives Course inclusive of a bond to work for the Government for one year after course completion. In 1978, the ANM training was revamped as the Basic Health Workers Course as per government regulations. Training now extended to two years and students could only enroll after passing intermediate (10+2) as their basic qualification. In 1991, the Uttar Pradesh government ceased all nursing training owing to shortage of funds thus in 1992, the School of Nursing got affiliated to Mid India Board of Examiners (MIBE). This Board which is a part of Nurses League of Christian Medical Association of India is an Independent Board and is recognized by Indian Nursing Council, New Delhi. The St. Catherine's School of Nursing was granted permission to run a two-year A.N.M. Course for girls who could enroll after passing High School. The GNM course was finally launched in 2000 with affiliation to the MIBE. In 2002, the school got affiliated to UP State Medical Faculty, Lucknow and continued to run the GNM course recognized by the Indian Nursing Council, New Delhi. In the year 2011 the school got permission to admit 40 GNM students per year for the three and a half year course.
