In order to meet the needs of the Trust s services you may be required from time to time to work at different locations to your normal place of work. JOB SUMMARY The Ealing Paediatric Occupational Therapy Service is responsible for the provision of the Occupational Therapy Service to children who have an Ealing GP. The service covers a wide range of settings including Special Schools, Children s Centres, Mainstream Schools and Local Health Centres / Clinics. The post holder will be primarily based at Carmelita House. (The service reserves the right to require post holder to work and base at any other settings with mutual agreement). The post holder will be an autonomous practitioner in the following areas:- 1. Assess and treat own specialist caseload of children with different conditions within the OT service in different service settings when required. The specific caseload will be arranged in relationship to the post holder s clinical experience, preference and also stage of professional development in paediatric Occupational Therapy. 2. Provide specialist OT advice to other disciplines. 3. Supervise OT Technicians, support workers and OT students on practice placement. 4. Be involved in different service development and clinical governance activities e.g. clinical audit, research etc.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES A. Clinical Duties and Responsibilities 1. To assess and treat children at different community and educational settings with supervision from the Advanced Paediatric Occupational Therapist. 2. To provide specialist assessment and intervention in the following areas according to the child s stage of development and specific needs with consideration of the social and family background, with clinical support provided by the supervising therapist if necessary:- a. basic play and learning skills, e.g. attention, turn-taking, advice on suitable training materials, etc. b. prewriting and handwriting skills c. activities of daily living, i.e. self-care training and provision of aids or equipment for increased independence in feeding, toileting, dressing, personal hygiene, home management, community skills, etc. d. sensorimotor functions related to body control and effective use of hands for manipulation. e. sensory integrative functions, i.e. ability to modulate and discriminate different sensory information for effective regulation of arousal level, attention control, motor co-ordination and planning function, perceptual functions, learning and organisation of behaviour. f. specific perceptual functions related to literacy and numeracy skills, e.g. body awareness, visual-perception, auditory perception, etc. g. special seating h. minor and major adaptation for environmental modification. i. switches and controls for computers or other micro-technological equipment for learning and communication. j. splinting to improve the movement and use of arms and hands. 3. To carry out school / nursery and home visits (where required) to advise teaching staff / parents / carers on treatment activities. 4. To provide written treatment programme and incorporate occupational therapy aims into the child s school / nursery timetable. 5. To give advice and suggestions to other professionals involved, e.g. doctors, physiotherapists and speech and language therapists, etc.

6. To carry out risk assessment and to keep up to date with and adhere to new guidelines and legislation regarding equipment provision, manual handling and safe working practices. 7. To attend relevant courses, lectures and visits and keep up to date with relevant professional knowledge, and to show evidence of application of knowledge in working practice. 8. To contribute to the development of the service delivery model in order to facilitate the effective uses of resources and meet the current demand and changes. 9. To participate in research, if appropriate, conducted by the department or the trust. 10. To contribute specialist advice as part of the Code of Practice for the Assessment of Special Educational Needs in line with educational policies and procedures. 11. To deliver specialist training (both formal and informal), together with senior staff, in the clinical area appropriate to the needs of course participants. This includes parents, carers, and health or education professionals both independently and in conjunction with other professionals. 12. To work collaboratively with multi-agency professionals to develop and implement comprehensive specialist treatment packages for children/adolescents with complex conditions 13. To manage own caseload and prioritise according to the child s needs and departmental policies on service delivery, to ensure that intervention is meeting the needs of children, families and / or carers. 14. To seek supervision and support from senior staff/supervisor when required. B. Working Relationships and Communication Requirements 1. To attend annual reviews, case conferences and meetings in order to contribute up-to-date information on the child s occupational therapy input. 2. To communicate highly complex, sensitive, or contentious condition-related information effectively and provide specialist advice and recommendations to all professionals and carers involved in written or verbal format in order to develop collaborative working. 3. To use specialist knowledge to refer children and families to other services / professionals as necessary after getting appropriate consent e.g. Repair and Adaptation Service, CAMHS, Wheelchair services etc. 4. To employ excellent communication skills such as persuasion, motivation and clear explanations to encourage parents, nursery and school staff to undertake treatment programmes as recommended. 5. To deal with initial complaints sensitively, avoiding escalation where possible and report to the line manager / service manager.

C. Professional and Departmental Responsibilities 1. To work within the Trust s and COT Code of Conduct and to have a good working knowledge of national and local standards and policies. 2. To attend statutory and mandatory training provided by the trust, relevant postgraduate specialist courses, lectures and visits and keep up to date with relevant professional knowledge, and to show evidence of application of knowledge in working practice. 3. To keep up-to-date statistical information on clinical activities and submit for each month. 4. To keep timely and accurate case record and relevant documentations (e.g. care plans, progress reports etc) in line with the trust s, departmental and COT guidelines. 5. To keep a record of inventory of equipment belonging to the department in different service settings covered by the therapist. 6. To help to maintain a good filing system for case files and clinical information within the base or areas of work. 7. To follow departmental procedures, e.g. sick leave arrangements, travel claims, monthly attendance sheet, etc. 8. To attend and make contribution in regular Staff Meetings and In-service Training Sessions. 9. To participate in quality assurance, clinical audit, and outcome measures studies conducted by the Department. 10. To contribute to different clinical governance activities within the department or the Trust. 11. To help to deliver training courses organised by the department for occupational therapists and other health / educational professionals from within or outside the borough. 12. To provide clinical cover of urgent cases for other therapists who are on leave or vacancies in other service settings. 13. To maintain a good system for security of case files and clinical information within the base or areas of work, according to the policies of confidentiality and data protection. 14. To be responsible for the security, care and maintenance of equipment ensuring standards of infection control and safety are maintained including equipment used by children.

D. Responsibilities for Human Resources, Finance, Leadership, Supervision and Appraisal 1. To supervise Occupational Therapy Technicians or Support Workers/ OT students, and be responsible for their professional development by annual IPR and PDP reviews. 2. To implement continuous service improvement systems and help to monitor staff compliance with any quality initiatives within the service setting. 3. To delegate tasks to others within the team when required to achieve balance between clinical and operational responsibilities. 4. To represent the team in different multi-disciplinary and service delivery meetings across organisations. 5. To assist with the induction of new staff within your specialist clinical area and with the induction of new members of the MDT. 6. To advise line manager on issues of service delivery including shortfalls, pressures and training needs within specialist area. ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES INFORMATION GOVERNANCE All NHS workers must abide at all times by the Confidentiality: NHS Code of Practice document issued by the Department of Health, and follow the relevant confidentiality and privacy policies specifically adopted by the Trust. Information relating to patients, employees and business of the Trust must be treated in the strictest confidence and under no circumstances should such information be discussed with any unauthorised person(s) or organisations. All information collected, stored and used must be done so in compliance with the Data Protection Act, the Freedom of Information Act (2000) and all relevant Trust Policy. Breaches of confidentiality or information governance protocol may lead to disciplinary action. INFORMATION SECURITY All staff must adhere to the requirements of the Trust s Information Security Policy, which covers the deployment and use of all of the Trust s electronic information systems (i.e. all computers, peripheral equipment, software and data). In serious cases, failure to comply with the Policy may result in disciplinary action and could also result in a criminal offence. HEALTH AND SAFETY AT WORK Act (1974) You are required to take reasonable care for your health, safety and welfare and that of other people who may be affected by your actions or omissions. These responsibilities apply at all times whilst you are at work or on duty and apply to all Trust premises and also whilst working in the community or on any other Trust business. INFECTION CONTROL AND HOSPITAL-ACQUIRED INFECTION Infection Control is everyone s responsibility. All staff, both clinical and non-clinical, are required to adhere to the Trust s Infection Prevention and Control Policies and make every effort to maintain high standards to infection control at all times thereby reducing the burden of Healthcare Associated Infections including MRSA. In particular all staff have the following key responsibilities: Staff must wash their hands or use alcohol hand rub on entry to or exit from all clinical areas and between each patient contact. Staff members have a duty to attend infection control training provided for them by the Trust. Staff members who develop an infection that may be transmissible to patients have a duty to contact Occupational Health. SAFEGUARDING CHILDREN AND VULNERABLE ADULTS We all have a personal and a professional responsibility within the Trust to identify and report abuse. The abuse may be known, suspected, witnessed or be limited to raised concerns. Early recognition is vital to ensuring the patient is safeguarded and any other people (children and vulnerable adults) who may be at risk. The Trust s procedures must be implemented, working in partnership with the relevant authorities. The sharing of information no matter how small is of prime importance in safeguarding children, young people and vulnerable adults.
