Reservations by October 26 th are requested for our planning purposes and a $10.00 per person nominal charge will help defray costs. Corporate sponsorships are available and appreciated. Call for details. This is an excellent opportunity to visit and tour our new office location and we hope you will join us. PUBLIC FACILITIES MANUAL FLEXIBILITY The Fairfax County Public Facilities Manual (PFM) Flexibility team is working with a consultant to perform a gap analysis and create a roadmap to incorporate clarity and flexibility into the PFM. The scope of work includes minimizing the use of mandatory requirements, expanding the use of urban and innovative designs, updating tables and plates, eliminating outdated criteria, and linking to other approved sources to remain relevant. The roadmap recommendations for updating the PFM are expected in early January 2018. To be a part of this effort, visit http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/dpwes/publications/pfm/ or email LDSFlexibilityPFM@fairfaxcounty.gov. ESI DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION ESI is in search of a professional to lead its educational program(s) into the future. Individuals with leadership experience in the design and delivery of adult educational programs are encouraged to apply. Experience in engineering or land development is preferable, and experience with diverse methods of program delivery (classroom, ondemand, webcasting, etc.) is a bonus as well. Full time position with benefits with salary commensurate with experience. Interested candidates should contact Brittany Kitchens at (703) 263-2232 or at bkitchens@esinova.org. Open until filled. 1

HELP US WELCOME OUR NEW ESI STAFF ENGINEER Sean Peiffer has joined ESI as a full-time Staff Engineer and will be serving as one of our engineering representatives at the Herrity Building at Fairfax County. Sean is a Land Surveyor by trade and has over 12 years of experience in the land development industry in Northern Virginia. He served with Dewberry and Fairfax County prior to joining ESI. Sean will work with Jerry Kitchens and County staff to provide reviews of Infill plan submissions for Fairfax County. Please help us welcome Sean! Placing first with an amazing score of 18 under (54) was the team from the Wealth Advisors Group (ESI s financial advisor), which included Chris Laughlin, George Leppert, John Groupe, and Shane Moore. Second place went to the Paciulli Simmons & Associates team of Bum Phillips, Stu Fedderson, Tom Greenspon and Heath Stockton, posting a sizzling score of 10 under (62). Close behind with a score of 9 under, 63, the Dewberry team of Glen Faunce, Nicholas Shimer, Stephen Franks, and John Stokely captured third. There was even a Great Effort award going to the Fairfax County team of Walt Hamilton, Clinton Abernathy, Jerry Stonefield and Sean Peiffer (now with ESI), who didn t post a winning score, but had a blast at the event. 2017 ESI HANK HULME GOLF CLASSIC IS A HIT! Excellent tournament and incredible golf course I had a great time food was fantastic loved the scoring app a good time was had by all! This year s renewal of the ESI Hank Hulme Golf Classic, held at The Golf Club at Lansdowne on Sept. 21, proved to be popular once again with numerous teams competing and generally having the time of their lives! This year s event saw nearly 50 golfers hitting the pristine and challenging links of the Robert Trent Jones, II course near Leesburg. The popular Captain s Choice format allowed players from all levels to participate in a fun but competitive atmosphere. Winning the Men s Longest Drive Contest at 285 yds. was Stephen Spriggs, and Sue Boomer Wolford crushed the Women s Longest Drive Contest to capture those trophies. Bill Snow won the Closest to the Pin contest nestling his shot to within 12-5 of the Par 3 128 yd. hole. 2

Afterward, the group enjoyed a first-class dinner of smoked beef brisket, seared salmon and lots of sides n fixins while reminiscing of the ones that almost went in, lipped the cup or, generally, should have fallen. The finale of the event was drawing and handing out raffle prizes totaling over $2000. ESI gratefully thanks this year s sponsors - Pennoni, Dewberry, Burgess & Niple, RC Fields & Associates, Wetlands Studies and Solutions and Brickwall Printing & Graphics (who printed all of the sponsor signage). In addition, Ed Venditti and Stu Fedderson generously secured and donated two fabulous foursome raffle prizes at nearby golf courses. We truly appreciate the generous support of these firms and individuals to help us pull off this great event! Finally, we want to personally thank Sue Wolford (Pennoni), Bum Phillips (Paciulli Simmons) and Jeff Blackford for their unselfish dedication to serve on this year s golf committee, headed by Gary Newlen, as well as the ESI staff. Their experience, guidance and committed teamwork resulted in the overwhelming success of this year s event. If you missed it this time, plan now to be a part of this great event next year! WHAT S NEW IN EDUCATION? As we close out this year, ESI still has some classes you won t want to miss! Remaining 2017 Educational Opportunities 1. 2017 Policy & Procedure Update Classes: ESI will offer these classes in either live and/or recorded versions. a. Prince William County will host a live P&P Update Class on location in the Board Chambers on Thursday, November 9, from 2-4 pm. Prior enrollment will not be necessary as the venue is spacious enough to accommodate all who need this class. b. Fairfax County has scheduled a live P&P Update Class in ESI s classroom on Wednesday, November 15, from 1-4 pm. You will be notified when enrollment opens for this class, and it will be available in a firstcome, first-served basis. It will be recorded for those unable to attend the live class. c. Loudoun County will record its P&P Update Class and it will be made available online to members. You will be notified by e-mail when this class is ready for viewing, which should occur by mid-november. Further details regarding these jurisdictional courses will be emailed to members and posted on ESI s website when they become available. Members are requested to complete these classes by December 31, 2017. 2. Jurisdictional Sequences in the Land Development Engineering Program: Would it be helpful to be certified as a DPE in another jurisdiction? If so, don t miss this once-a-year opportunity to enroll in the jurisdictional courses that supplement the Land Development Engineering Program. All jurisdictional classes will be held in early December on location from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm. Call ESI for details. 2018 Professional Development Program Thank you to those who completed ESI s 2018 PD Class Survey. Your feedback was extremely helpful, and we are currently developing next year s academic curriculum based upon your priorities. We are already scheduling several highly requested classes, including Adequate Outfall Stream 3

Restoration & Natural Channel Design, Low Impact Design & Sustainability, and Design & Modeling of Public Water Systems. We also are seeking to incorporate several of the always popular site visits, including a follow-up trip to the Silver Line. In addition, ESI will offer a 2-day DEQ ESC Inspector training course in our new facility for the convenience of our members. Members will be alerted by email when ESI s 2018 Catalog of Education Programs has been posted to our website and all of our Professional Development Classes are available for online enrollment. Please note that this year instructors have been asked, where feasible, to indicate the level of their presentations. Although these levels (Introductory, Intermediate, or Advanced) are subjective, they will be included in course descriptions to assist members to make their most appropriate class choices. Remember to register early to ensure your best selection. Till Next Year. ESI sends its best wishes to all our members for a safe and happy holiday season, and we look forward to seeing you in class next year! A Personal Note to ESI s Members From Pam Quirion, Director of Education Although I came to ESI to fill in as Acting Director of Education for three months, I welcomed the job and the challenge, and I am now completing my fifth year here. Therefore, it is with mixed feelings that I have decided to leave ESI at the end of 2017 in order to attend to family matters. Thank you all for your friendship and support over the past few years. It has been a pleasure to work with you all and a great privilege to have gotten to know many of you better. Thank you too for your many contributions to help ESI increase the quality of our educational programs. ESI cannot achieve excellence in our classes without your help. You have offered your support in a myriad of ways, including providing your feedback, class suggestions, and subject matter expertise. This is uniquely your educational program, and I encourage you to continue to stay involved with it. So, as I say goodbye, please know how much your friendship and support has meant and how much you will also be missed. May God bless you all. 4
