Volume 36 Number 1 340 West Commonwealth Avenue fullerton COMMUNITY CENTER Fullerton, CA 92832 (714) 738-6305 January 2016 Income Tax Assistance Program Too Good to Be True? The free volunteer income tax assistance program will be available Thursdays, from 12 to 3 p.m., February 4 through April 14, for adults 60 years of age or older with moderate incomes. Appointments are required: starting January 4, you may call the center at 714 738-6305. It is important to call the center if you must cancel your appointment. BEWARE: Health Scams Wednesday, February 24 1 to 2 p.m. The old adage usually rings true: If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Yet, Americans often run the risk of falling prey to fraudulent claims and then paying a heavy price financially and, sometimes, also health-wise. The seminar will focus on a discussion about how to spot medication/supplement health scams, common language used to hook you in, such as QUICK FIX, CURE-ALL, MIRACLE CURE, NO RISK and similar words. Avoid health scams and also learn how to report an incident. Free program sponsored by Adult Public Health Nursing Services. Preregister at 714 738-6305. Bring the following to your appointment: last year s state and federal tax returns, Social Security Card and statement (SSA-1099), any income records, including W-2s from employment, unemployment statements, pension and IRA statements, interest and dividend statements, itemized deductions, brokerage statements, state and federal estimated tax payment records, and for those under Covered California Health Care, Form 1095A or Exemption Certificate; also a voided check for any direct deposit refund. Diabetes Education Series Fridays, January 8 - January 29 10 to 11:30 a.m. Yvonne Ahmid, R.N., diabetes educator, will lead a 4-week comprehensive program, covering more than just the basics. Topics will include getting and keeping diabetes under control, being better informed about possible complications, prevention, nutrition and other selfcare issues. To attend, preregister at 714 738-6305. It s Your Estate Series Free educational 8-week program starts Wednesday, April 6-2 to 3:30 p.m. Learn about pitfalls, safeguards, practical management and planning for the future. Register at the front desk or call 714 738-6305. Sponsored by the Fullerton Community Center, FEEL, Inc., St. Jude Memorial Foundation and the generosity of partnering Orange County charity organizations. Opportunity Knocks Healthy Meals for Healthy Living Mondays, March 7 - April 4 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. This informative five-week program aims to help students learn how to utilize the following dynamic MyPlate nutrition concepts: building a healthy plate, planning satisfying, nutritious meals, shopping on a budget, better understanding nutrition labeling and making healthier beverage choices. A focus on the five food groups rather than the old food pyramid can make better nutrition a more attainable goal. Nutrition preparation demonstrations and sampling will be included during the series. To attend, preregister at 714 738-6305. Free program is sponsored by Adult Public Health Nursing Services,
