Press Information The Heidelberg Innovation Forum 2013: more interactive, international and investor friendly than ever before On 20 March 2013, 20 start-ups from across Europe will present their promising business ideas on the subject of 'The Mobile Ecosystem' Matchmaking for researchers and founders on the one hand, and investors and businesses on the other hand: That is the core idea of the Heidelberg Innovation Forum, which annually provides the opportunity for researchers and founders from the ICT industry to present a quick run-through of their business ideas and technologies. The idea behind this is to bring together research and industry at as early a stage as possible. On 20 March 2013, more than 20 research projects will present their findings on the subject of mobile technologies. A new feature is the Coaching Day on 19 March, with custom training sessions for the participants held by international experts. Opportunities for investors to compare notes and an EU conference on technology transfer place the finishing touches on the programme. Stuttgart, 03.04.13 Setting up a company is much more than just having a good idea. Many start-ups do have excellent specialist knowledge, but often lack the commercial expertise to successfully implement their idea or the technology to present their idea in a persuasive manner. Therefore, the 12th Heidelberg Innovation Forum (HDI), organised jointly by the MFG Innovation Agency and the EML European Media Laboratory, focusses not only on providing networking with investors at an early stage, but also on preparing the participants appropriately. "Experience has shown that a good presentation is almost as important as a well thought-out technical concept," Jürgen Jähnert says, director of ICT and Knowledge Networks at MFG. "The business ideas selected for the HDI are thoroughly innovative. The Coaching Day is our contribution to communicating these ideas to potential investors and cooperation partners in a convincing manner." New formats: Coaching Day, Investor Workshop and Fail Workshop Together with the Baden-Württemberg: Connected / bwcon industry initiative and its FAME EU project, the HDI 2013 is offering a Coaching Day for the first time on Telephone +49 711 90715-316, Fax +49 711 90715-360, E-mail presse@mfg.de Page 1 of 3

19 March. This will provide the participating start-ups with the opportunity to spruce up their presentation with international experts. The FAME Financing Network, which has the objective of promoting economic growth in the creative industry, provides the renowned coaches that give feedback on the presented business models and examine finance aspects of the concepts. It is well-known that the best way for you to learn is from your mistakes. Therefore, three internationally experienced founders will talk about their failed business ideas in the Fail Workshop on this day of the event. In contrast to the usual best practice examples, this event illustrates the stumbling blocks and establishes common traits of failed start-ups as part of a floor discussion with the audience. Investors also profit from the comprehensive coaching the participants receive, thus ensuring that the investors obtain an improved image of the presented concepts. At the Investor Workshop that takes place directly after the presentations, investors and business angels have the opportunity to discuss the business ideas with one another. A well-known investor has been attracted for the keynote: Laura Kilcrease, CEO of Triton Ventures. The Texas-based venturecapital fund invests in technology companies in their early phases of innovation. Matchmaking on an international level It is not only the coaches that can boast an international background, rather the start-ups too. On this occasion, the applications come not only from Germany, but also from Spain, Italy, Romania, Hungary, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands and Turkey. This includes, for example, the Netmera concept for an uncomplicated cloud-based back-end platform for various apps. This is the brainchild of Kaan Bingol and Ahmet Başaran from Istanbul. A five-person team from Italy have come up with the idea for Atooma. This is a mobile toolkit that automates time-consuming fiddling around with a smartphone's mode to ensure that it's silent at the right moment, for example. Roland Sigmond and Jens Merkl from Stuttgart in turn have created a new type of board game: Marbleverse. This combines digital, audiovisual and haptic elements. The EU conference entitled From Research to Innovation in the Digital Media Sector is taking place as part of the Innovation Forum. At the same time, it acts as the closing conference of the European SMARD project. At the event, EU representatives and technology-transfer experts will discuss how research findings can be more optimally analysed in future; in particular, in respect of the new EU Horizon 2020 research programme. Press Information Mobile musical therapy for tinnitus scoops the prize for the best business idea at the Heidelberg Innovation Forum Best Business Idea Award 2013 goes to a German start-up An international specialist jury has made the award to the best business idea at the 12th Heidelberg Innovation Forum. On 20 March 2013, 20 start-ups from across the whole of Europe presented their research findings on the subject of mobile technologies. The 'Best Business Idea' award went to Tinnitracks with the concept of a mobile musical therapy for tinnitus and an innovation voucher to the sum of 5,000 euros to boot. The participating investors demonstrated their enthusiasm at the creativity and conviction of the company founders and researchers on show, whom international coaches had intensively prepared for their presentations at the bwcon Coaching Day. Stuttgart, 26.03.2013 Six million people suffer from tinnitus, or ringing in the ears, in Germany alone. Across the EU as a whole, some 25 million people are affected. This ringing in the ears, caused by faulty brain connections, is currently not curable. However, the latest research found that music and sound therapy can provide some relief. The Hamburg-based start-up Sonormed GmbH is using these findings to create a custom therapy for on the move: the Tinnitracks technology uses a special algorithm to filter out the patient's specific 'interference frequency' in his or her music collection, and adjusts the music accordingly. In this way, those affected can treat themselves simply by listening to music. To round off the 12th Heidelberg Innovation Forum (HDI) on 20 March 2013, Tinnitracks won the award as the most persuasive business idea before an audience of around 120 researchers, entrepreneurs and investors. Jörg Land, Managing Director of the fledgling company, was extremely satisfied: "The Heidelberg Innovation Forum is a brilliant event superbly organised and with many exciting contacts. Above all, the specific, high-quality feedback from the coaches and investors was very helpful to us. Now we can continue to fine tune our product in a targeted manner, and plan our next steps more optimally." Telephone +49 711 90715-316, Fax +49 711 90715-360, e-mail presse@mfg.de Page 1 of 3

The prize includes an innovation voucher to the sum of 5,000 euros for advancing the business idea, sponsored by FORT (FOstering continuous Research and Technology application). The EU project supports the proliferation and application of research findings in the central European region by way of transnational innovation networks and cooperations. FORT will work together with European partners to support Tinnitracks in implementing its idea. "We will use the innovation voucher primarily for the technical advancement of Tinnitracks," Jörg Land announces. "The award has come at just the right time: in the last week of March, we are launching Tinnitracks.com initially in closed mode; in other words, for invited patients only." 'Mobile' trend delights investors and visitors Promising business ideas and excellent IT research findings presented succinctly and to the point the Heidelberg Innovation Forum has been pursuing this formula for 12 years and is targeted at investors, business angels and decision-makers. The event, organised by MFG Baden-Württemberg together with EML European Media Laboratory, focussed on the subject of 'The Mobile Ecosystem' in 2013. The Forum got underway with the European conference of the SMARD project 'From Research to Innovation' with more than one hundred participants. Investor Laura Kilcrease, CEO of the Texas-based Triton Ventures venture-capital fund, used her keynote speech to explain the particular importance of promoting companies in their early phase, so-called early stage ventures, in terms of driving economic growth. In this vein, she stressed the vital role of crowdfunding one third of all crowdfunding platforms come from Europe and business angels to close the financial gap between the early and later stage. Subsequently, the gauntlet was laid down to the 20 researchers, developers and company founders from eight European countries to make six-minute presentations to win over not only the specialist audience, but also the four-person jury, and convince them of their ideas. Besides Tinnitracks, Eedu elements from Finland presented its mobile learning-by-teaching method, for example; and Marbleverse from Stuttgart introduced a new type of board game with digital, audiovisual and haptic elements. bwcon Coaching Day powered by FAME The presentations by the start-ups were met with buoyant interest among investors. Coach Allan Rasmussen, Investment Manager at the Denmark-based CAT Science Park, praised the quality of the presentations: "I was surprised how much more persuasive the young businesspeople were in their presentations Telephone +49 711 90715-316, Fax +49 711 90715-360, e-mail presse@mfg.de Page 2 of 3

compared to in the training sessions on the previous day. The Coaching Day has really helped many of the participants to improve their presentation technique." The new format on 19 March entailed a multi-faceted training programme for the startups. As part of the coaching sessions, the participants were able to put their financing, business model and presentation under the microscope, and obtain specific feedback from the coaches in the EU FAME project.
