Celebrating 91 Years of Service Rota - Reel Te Rotary Club of Valdosta A 100% Paul Harris Fellow Club www.valdostarotary.org Volume 1, Issue 21, December 15, 2010 Tis Week s Program Annual Family of Rotary Holiday Lunceon Come prepared for our annual Family of Rotary Holiday Lunceon. Bring your family members and sare in te fellowsip of Rotary as we celebrate te oliday season togeter. Tere will be lots of delicious food, fellowsip, music and song. Tis will be our last meeting before we break for te oliday. You don t want to miss! Tis Week At A Glance Program: Family of Rotary Holiday Lunceon Al Turner and Guests Greeters: Trey Fausett One more needed Club News For years, Rotarian Ty O Steen as worked wit Te Marine Corp Toys for Tots campaign. Tey collect and sort donated toys and distribute tem to needy kids. Our region covers Lowndes county and six oter surrounding counties. However, all toys collected in Lowndes County are distributed in Lowndes County. Tey work wit DFACS and wit area curces to assist in te screening process. Last year te campaign assisted 37,351 families of wic about 14,000 were from Lowndes County. In te past Toys for Tots National Foundation as been able to elp by sending truck loads of toys donated by corporations. However, tis year te National Foundation as warned tat tey will not be able to send any toys. Your elp is needed! If you are interested in elping, please contact Ty O Steen or bring your unwrapped toys to your next meeting and we will see tat it gets in te rigt ands. Ty O'Steen L.E.A.D. Law Enforcement Appreciation Dinner Te Law Enforcement Appreciation Dinner is an opportunity for our community to say tank you and to sow its appreciation for local law enforcement professionals serving in Lowndes County. All Lowndes County communities are invited to participate eac year. Te two-fold purpose of tis dinner is: 1) to give recognition to law officers in general and to onor Officers of te Year from area agencies, and 2) to set up a law enforcement assistance fund were 100% of te net proceeds from te dinner goes to assist law enforcement professionals and teir families in times of special need. Happy Fund: Dollars: (not $48.27 collected) Literacy Cups: $69.36 Last week s program was our annual State Legislative Lunceon. To ost te event, te Valdosta-Lowndes County Camber of Commerce partnered wit te Rotary Club of Valdosta, te Valdosta Nort Rotary Club, and te Valdosta Sunrise Rotary Club. Te purpose of tis annual event is to present our members and our local delegation, Senator Tim Golden and Representatives Ellis Black, Amy Carter and Jason Saw wit te Camber s 2011 State Legislative Agenda for Business. Camber members and delegates taking part in te program were (l to r): Randy Sauls, Jon LaHood, Representative Amy Carter, Darrell Wilder, Jon Page, Megan Smit, Representative Ellis Black, Paula Goff, State Senator Tim Golden, and Representative Jason Saw. President Walter Elliott presiding over last weeks meeting. Special guests were (l to r): Representative Jason Saw, Paula Goff, Cair, Camber Governmental Affairs Committee, Representative Ellis Black, and club President Walter Elliott. Oter special guests were (l to r): Senator Tim Golden, subcommittee representative Jeff Hanson, Representative Amy Carter, and Darrell Wilder, Cair, Camber State Legislative Committee.

Ringing te Bell Te Salvation Army Eac year, our club volunteers to ring te bell for Te Salvation Army for one day during te Cristmas season. Tis year we assisted at Wal-Mart on Nort Perimeter on Tursday, December 9. A number of your fellow Rotarians volunteered to ring te bell for one our. Here are some potos of just a few tat elped spread oliday ceer and give back to our community. Enjoy! Anne Katryn Stone and Past President Dr. Suzanna Patterson were all smiles once Dr. Patterson went inside and purcased tese fasionable gloves keep er ands warm. Wo knew tat Santa Clause was a Rotarian? (a.k.a. Past President Dr. Dennis Marks) Bob Moon and Ty O Steen seem to be enjoying te day despite te cold. Past President Jon Page took an afternoon sift. Past President Dr. Dennis Marks and Claire Lee can always be counted on to elp ring te bell.

PAUL HARRIS FELLOW Rotarians wo ave made a cumulative contribution of $1,000 are designated Paul Harris Fellows. Our club as acieved te status of a 100% Paul Harris Fellow Club. EVERY ROTARIAN EVERY YEAR [EREY] A project to get every member to donate $100 a year to te Foundation. Wit tat donation one becomes a sustaining member and takes part in fueling te economic engine of Rotary. POLIO PLUS A program tat as elped eradicate polio trougout most of te world. Wit te elp of te Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Rotary is in te final pus to eliminate it in Pakistan, Afganistan, India, and Nigeria. MEETINGS Members coordinate weekly greeters, song leaders, invocation, and Sunsine Report. PUBLIC RELATIONS INTERN PROGRAM Top Valdosta State University public relations students compete for te opportunity to assist te club wit its PR activities. Tey work wit a club member to disseminate news about te impact of Rotary witin te club and district and in te community. For tis, eac is awarded a stipend. BULLETIN Te weekly Rota-Reel gives information about programs, activities, members, and events. WEBMASTER Our website www.valdostarotary.org is a gateway to Rotary for Rotarians and non-rotarians alike. Vocational Service LAW ENFORCEMENT APPRECIATION DINNER [LEAD] Te dinner as two objectives: to recognize and onor te officers of te year; and to build te Rotary Law Enforcement Fund, wic can be used to assist officers and teir families in times of special need. VOCATIONAL AWARDS Our club recognizes persons witin our community tat ave demonstrated outstanding vocational and occupational service. Nominations are submitted by our members, and te award is presented to te winner during a club meeting. Community Service HAPPY DOLLARS / GUEST SPEAKER Money raised from members wanting to make announcements at club meetings. Te money is used to buy books in onor of our guest speakers, and te books are placed in our local library. COINS FOR ALZHEIMER S RESEARCH TRUST [CART] On te fourt Wednesday of te mont, CART containers are passed around te tables. Te money collected is sent to te Trust wic distributes funds to selected researc institutions. 100% of te money goes towards researc for a cure. IMAGINATION LIBRARY Te Rotary clubs of Valdosta, Valdosta Nort, and Valdosta Sunrise are working wit te Ferst Foundation and te Dolly Parton Foundation to raise money for books for pre-scool cildren in Lowndes County. Cildren enrolled in te program receive an Imagination Library book - from Te Little Engine tat Could to Look Out Kindergarten, Here I Come - eac mont until age five. COMMUNITY PARTNERS IN EDUCATION [CPIE] - Our club is partnered wit Valdosta s and Lowndes County s only Title I public scools to provide educational Assistance. PAUSE TO PASS / SCHOOL LIBRARIES Cups are passed at eac table every week. Te money raised is donated to te libraries at J.L. Lomax and Pine Grove Elementary Scools, our CPIE scools. MAGAZINES FOR STUDENTS Magazines are brougt to te meeting on te first Wednesday of every mont. Tey are collected as members walk in and taken to J.L. Lomax Scool for cildren to read. READING ASSISTANCE PROGRAM Members of our club go to J.L. Lomax to elp teacers wit under-privileged cildren. Activities include elping wit reading, mat, and general mentoring. RING THE BELL Our club volunteers to ring te bell for te Salvation Army for one day during te Cristmas season. Members sign up to ring te bell for one our. HIGHWAY CLEAN UP Our Club participates in te Adopt-A-Higway program. Our mile is on US 84, just east of te intersection wit Inner Perimeter Road. TRAVELERS ASSISTANCE Club members elp people involved in accidents wile traveling troug Valdosta get back on te road. New Generations INTERACT Interact is te ig scool version of Rotary. Students ages 14-18 are able to participate. Eac Interact Club is sponsored by a Rotary Club. Our club sponsors Interact Clubs at Georgia Cristian Scool, Lowndes Hig Scool, Valdosta Hig Scool, and Valwood. ROTARACT Rotaract is te college version of Rotary. Our club sponsors te Rotaract club of Valdosta State University. Te VSU faculty advisor is Jon Gaston. SPEECH CONTEST Te Hig Scool Speec Contest is a District 6920 sponsored contest to introduce students in our District to te concepts and workings of Rotary. Tese students compete in a contest in te local clubs, and te top two contestants from eac club advance to te Zone competition. Te winner from te Zone will present is or er speec at te District Conference and receive a ceck for $1,250. GEORGIA ROTARY STUDENT PROGRAM [GRSP] Our club elps sponsor a foreign student to attend VSU for one year. A family from our club elps ost te student during is or er stay in Valdosta. WILL WATT Rotarians wo ave made a cumulative contribution of $1000 to GRSP are designated Will Watt Fellows. International Service INTERNATIONAL PROJECT Our Club, in conjunction wit Rotary clubs in anoter countries, sponsors a community project in tat country. Te Rotary Club of Valdosta as participated in a number of international projects, suc as: eartquake relief in Haiti and Cile, and providing water filtration units for ouseolds in Ranco Dolores, Belize River Valley, Belize. GROUP STUDY EXCHANGE Eac year our District pairs wit a district in anoter country to excange Rotary-led teams of young professionals wo are not Rotarians.
