PL-1 Residents This elective is open to residents for 2-week or 4-week rotations. The purpose of this elective is to provide a concentrated exposure to children with commonly encountered diseases of the skin. The rotation is primarily an outpatient rotation although the occasional hospital inpatient consultation is also included. Residents are required to attend and be active participants in all clinics; to promptly evaluate patients and present to the attendings with their assessment and plans. Prior to the beginning of the rotation, the dermatology education coordinator will contact the resident regarding the clinic schedule, etc. The program email is dermres1@medicine.bsd.uchicago.edu. A. Patient Care: 1. Perform competent and detailed skin examination 2. Gather accurate, essential information from all sources, including medical interviews, physical examinations, medical records and diagnostic/therapeutic procedures 3. Make informed recommendations about preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic options and interventions that are based on clinical judgment, scientific evidence, and patient preference 4. Develop, negotiate and implement effective patient management plans and integration of patient care 5. Become knowledgeable about procedures such as KOH mounts, mineral oil preps, cryotherapy, and skin biopsies B. Medical Knowledge: Demonstrate familiarity with the basics of therapeutics of pediatric skin disease Demonstrate the use of the dermatologic vocabulary and be able to confidently describe skin lesions and rashes in pediatric patients Discuss the clinical aspects of dermatologic disorders Independently read about the pathophysiologic basis of skin disease and dermatologic manifestations of systemic disease Discuss the factors that determine when to refer a child to a dermatology specialist Review pertinent educational modules available through the American Academy of Dermatology at https://www.aad.org/education/basic-dermatology-curriculum on the following topics: o Neonatal HSV o Erythema toxicum o Neonatal pustular melanosis o Atopic dermatitis o Psoriasis o Ichthyosis vulgaris o Impetigo o Scalded skin syndrome o Urticaria o Scabies o Molluseum contagiosum o E. multiforme o Stevens Johnson syndrome 1

Identify areas for improvement and implement strategies to enhance knowledge, skills, attitudes and processes of care with the dermatology clinic 2. Analyze and evaluate practice experiences to improve the quality of patient practice 3. Maintain a willingness to learn from errors and use errors to improve personal performance and clinic function 4. Demonstrate the use of technology or other available methodologies to access and manage information, support patient care decisions and enhance both patient and physician education D. Interpersonal and Communication Skills: 1. Provide effective and professional consultation to other physicians and health care professionals and sustain therapeutic and ethically sound professional relationships with patients, their families, and colleagues 2. Demonstrate listening, nonverbal, questioning, and narrative skills to communicate with patients and families 3. Demonstrate the ability to educate and assure concerned family members of clinic patients 4. Communicate consultation findings with referring physicians in a respectful, appropriate and timely manner 5. Maintain comprehensive, timely, and legible medical records 6. Complete evaluations of the attending, staff and rotation in timely manner E. Professionalism: 1. Demonstrate respect, compassion, integrity, and altruism in relationships with patients, families, and colleagues 2. Demonstrate sensitivity and responsiveness to the gender, age, culture, religion, sexual preference, socioeconomic status, beliefs, behaviors and disabilities of patients and professional colleagues 3. Recognize and identify deficiencies in peer performance and deliver constructive evaluation and criticism F. Systems-Based Practice: 1. Describe the limitations and opportunities inherent in the subspecialty clinic systems 2.
