Due November 20 th, 2012 by 5:00 PM The Department of Hospitality and Tourism (HTMT) is pleased to offer its majors and minors and concentrations several diverse and rewarding educational financial assistance opportunities. Students are strongly encouraged to seek out and apply for those prospects that best match their personal circumstances, attributes, academic achievements and/or professional aspirations. *All scholarships and awards are conditional, pending sponsor funding. 1. Charleston Bed & Breakfast Association Education Award - $1000. The Charleston SC Bed and Breakfast Association (CBBA) members provide the perfect setting to experience the enchantment of Charleston; one of America s oldest and most finely preserved historic cities, where guests can wander among gracious antebellum homes and beautiful mansions. The CBBA is pleased to support HTMT students pursuing hospitality employment opportunities in any of its member bed and breakfast inns. The award is based on those that best represent a desire to seek career in inn or bed-and-breakfast management. 2. Charleston Restaurant Association Education Award- $7,500 (5 @ $1,500). The Greater Charleston restaurant Association (GCRA) is a nonpartisan, nonprofit trade organization serving the Charleston Area restaurant industry. It serves as the voice of the local restaurant industry on government and public relations issues. GCRA hosts two major festivals each year: The Taste of Charleston and the Lowcountry Oyster Festival. The scholarship is awarded based upon foodservice career interests, financial need and other criteria. 3. Kiawah Island Golf Resort Education Award- $1,500. Kiawah Island Golf Resort is the home of the famous Ocean Course, where the 2007 Senior PGA Championship was held. Tennis Magazine rated the Resort the #2 U.S. tennis resorts. It is also home to the 5 Diamond Sanctuary Hotel. The Scholarship is an award based upon hospitality career interests, financial need and other criteria. 4. Patrick Ringwald Scholarship- $2,000. The Patrick Ringwald Scholarship is given annually to a College of Charleston student with a major or minor or concentration in Hospitality and Tourism Management. The scholarship is in memory of the former general manager of the Boathouse Restaurant who was shot and killed during a robbery some years ago. Patrick was widely known in Charleston s food and beverage industry for over 20 years. Academic excellence, although important, is not the chief criteria for this scholarship. Instead, the scholarship is awarded to the student that best represents Patrick Ringwald s spirit and attitude. 5. Wild Dunes Resort Hospitality Management Scholarship- $3,000. Wild Dunes Resort specializes in memorable vacations, and offers many accommodation styles, abundant activities for all ages, great dining, and award winning golf and tennis. They are also active in meeting, planning, weddings, and catering. The scholarship is awarded to an HTMT student based upon resort industry career interests, financial need and other criteria. 6. Wine and Food Festival Education Award- $5,000 - $10,000 / Depending on 2013 W&F Festival outcome. The purpose for the Charleston Wine & Food Festival is to highlight and celebrate Charleston s extraordinary culinary history and culture. The Festival also recognizes and supports culinary establishments that sustain local industry. The Festival is a world-class, four-day event which promotes and supports a variety of culinary interests and charities. The scholarship is awarded based upon event management career interests, financial need, and other criteria. SCHOLARSHIP & EDUCATIONAL AWARD REQUIREMENTS AND GUIDELINES: Application Form: See below Cover Letter: -Each scholarship & award requires a well-crafted and thoughtful cover letter describing why you should be selected by the sponsor in question. This is the most important aspect of the application process. -Each sponsor has distinct features organizational requirements. -The cover letter should convincingly convey how and why the applicant meets the organization s requirements. Applicants should convey his or her best features. -The letter should not exceed two pages. -Get some feedback by having a friend proofread the letter before submitting it. Professional Resume or Curriculum Vita: -Although not strictly required, including a well-crafted resume can concisely and cogently augment your selection process. Award Receptions: -If selected, attendance at the School of Business (SB) and the HTMT award ceremonies in the spring is required. -Additionally, particular sponsors may require attendance at their respective reception. Thank You Letters: -All scholarship recipients are required to draft thank you letters to the sponsoring organization. Awards may be divided between two or more.
