Martin was called the father of the poor because he not only gave alms to the poor, but he treated them with compassion and respect. His knowledge of healing remedies served him in practical ways to treat the sick and to comfort and console the dying.

He offered God his ordinary daily works as prayers of intercession for others, namely the poor, the sick and the oppressed. Martin saw in them the face of the suffering Jesus, and tried, through his own simple words and deeds, to console and encourage those around him, especially those who had no one to care for them.

He understood the love that God has for his creatures, and that God has the well-being of his children at heart. Martin had the spiritual wisdom to recognize this truth, to give his life over to God s providential care, offering praise and worship to the Lord of Love.

He coped with difficulties, discomforts and sufferings that life brought to him, but he learned how to keep his gaze fixed on the faithful love of Jesus, and desired to be with him in heaven. This is the heroism that we acknowledge and celebrate in Martin s life.

At times this caused him suffering, but it did not prevent him from carrying out his works of charity and healing. Taking Jesus as his model, he learned how to forgive those who wronged him and even prayed for them.

He realized that God had granted humanity his greatest gift by sending his Son into the world to redeem us. This thought awakened in Martin such a profound love for God that his whole life reflected gratitude. Whatever he did, he did it for the Lord.

His intimate relationship with the Lord gave him such great inner peace that he became God s instrument to show others how to find peace of heart.

Ascension Thursday Ascension Thursday Recess At times Martin was ill-treated because of his commitment to the needs of the poor and the suffering. Rather than allowing criticism to discourage him and prevent him from doing good, he accepted it as a challenge. When he met persons who did not understand his dedication to the sick and needy, Martin tried to respond as Jesus would. He strove for a closer following of Christ, who was also misunderstood and rejected for doing good works.
