On Saturday, the Weekend of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday, students enjoyed being out in the community making contributions. One event that Miami Job Corps Students attended was the People Matter Pop-Up Peace Event held at Bennett Lifter Park. Students pictured above named from left to right Robert Odom, Berne Michaud, Timmie Witcher, Sifois Louis and Quinton Pierce helped with the Landscaping of the park.
Miami Job Corps Center Volume 1 Issue 6 January 19, 2018 Students spent the day at Bennett Lifter Park assisting with set up. There was music and bounce houses for the children. A lot of tents with people selling printed shirts they've made along with relating to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and Malcolm X. There was a truck called BuzzForward that gave free haircuts to the young boys of Miami Dade County for keeping them in good spirits and encouraging them to do better and keep it that way.
Success Story of the Month! Argeniz Reyes is a Miami Native who completed Miami Job Corps Computer Technician program on 8/22/17 and his ship date to the Army was 9/14/17. Argeniz was committed into the Military in March 2017 but continued his education with Job Corps before his deployment. Argeniz completed his ASVAB testing while attending Job Corps. Currently he is in the Advance Military Training Program in Georgia studying their security systems. January 19, 2018 Volume: 14 Number: 3 Bathroom Busters TRIPLE TEAM TRANSFORMATION the relationship with fellow IMI students. Attaboy, Atterbury! BCL Jeff Byrd reports that three is definitely not a crowd at Atterbury, where two Centers have joined with Atterbury students to renovate the RFK Dormitory bathrooms. International Masonry Institute Tile Setting students from Joliet and Denison, along with Atterbury's own Construction champs, spent days installing tile on the bathroom walls, shower pans and floor before moving onto grouting. This is in addition to Atterbury students' hard work in demolishing the old tiles and preparing everything be redone. This was a great opportunity to enhance the Center, while enhancing Saive Steals the Stage Joliet Shares the Good News A KEYSTONE STAR IS BORN Insiders report that Keystone has a new celebrity around campus. Academic Manager Steve Saive recently appeared in the Netflix movie "The Polka King," alongside comedy actor Jack Black. The movie, which earned two thumbs up from the Fables Editor Emeritus, tells the story of the real Jan Lewan Orchestra, in which Mr. Saive played trumpet. Mr. Saive was included in a previous documentary on the band, "The Man Who Would be Polka King." He also helped Mr. Black record the soundtrack for the Netflix movie, including the hits Mrs. Pennsylvania and To Be an American. Mr. Saive can be seen playing his trumpet in several scenes (such as this one) and was recently featured in the Altoona Mirror. Hooray for Hazleton! MAKING MEDIA WITH MARTIN Center Director Elvis Parker reports that Joliet BCL Wendell Martin took to the airwaves with Job Corps' story. Mr. Martin parlayed his invitation to guest star on 1340 WJOL's Sunday morning talk show "Lean In to Inspiration" into an opportunity to discuss all the programs Joliet offers and provide information on signing up. "My perspective of Job Corps has totally changed. I had no idea how much this program offered," said host Natalie Coleman, adding that she would love to have Mr. Martin back.
