A NEW EXPORT TRAINING INITIATIVE FOR CANADA S MUSIC INDUSTRY

Project Description The PASSPORT: Music Export Summit will deliver intensive skills development training sessions to prepare export-ready Canadian artists and music entrepreneurs with business skills and artistic product development to increase international trade and export market development. The project will be aimed at self-managed artists and artist managers (along with other music company entrepreneurs active in artist development) who are export ready or engaged in the process of becoming export ready. Mandate: to assist export-ready Canadian artists and music entrepreneurs develop export markets and increase international trade. Theme: Preparing your business for global release of product in diversified export markets. Participants: Passport is aimed at export-ready artists and artist managers who are preparing for market development and export activities. Passport participants will have a current or upcoming release, be members of their provincial music industry association, and will have showcased (or represented a showcasing artist) at a recognized music industry conference or showcasing festival. Participants will have made initial inroads into international markets or are preparing for their first international showcase festival or tour in the coming 18 months. Participants will have taken part in foundational business training through their provincial music industry association, Canada s Music Incubator, or regional music conferences, and have experience with basic administrative and music marketing tasks. The call for submissions process will aim to identify the artists who are likely to be invited to participate in key international showcase events such as The Great Escape, Reeperbahn Festival, New Skool Rules, Focus Wales, Tallinn Music Week, International Folk Alliance, SXSW, etc. in the coming year(s). Selection : Submissions will be evaluated based on the stated rationale for how this program fits the applicant s export development plan, the export readiness and business track record of the applicant, and their current team and business structure. The provincial Music Industry Associations will be asked for input on the applicants and final selection will be made by a selection committee. The submissions and selection process will include a focus on diversity. People of colour and racialized people are encouraged to apply. Format : Parallel bootcamp style events in Winnipeg and Halifax will provide participants with information and skills development on the topic of export and global release. The Winnipeg Summit will also include streams for Indigenous artists/companies, and Francophone artists/companies (Rame à la rencontre) with support from Musicaction. A follow-up masterclass event in Calgary will be available to participants from the initial session, and will incorporate reviews of specific export plans, streamed live performances, and the creation of media assets for use in international marketing.

Schedule : Music Export Summit West - Winnipeg - February 21-25, 2018 Music Export Summit Indigenous Winnipeg - February 21-25, 2018 Music Export Summit East - Halifax - February 28 - March 4, 2018 Music Export Summit Masterclass - National Music Centre, Calgary - April 8-12 Marketing : PASSPORT: Music Export Summit will be marketed across the sector to ensure that all export ready artists and managers are aware of this new initiative. The summit will be positioned as a professional development activity that will attract emerging and established artists and professionals who have experience in the music and and may have participated in foundational or entry level training. In this way, PASSPORT will be marketed as an upper tier professional development opportunity. PASSPORT will have web and email graphics, a dedicated website and social media presence, and banners and physical signage for events. Sample graphic: Partners: PASSPORT: Music Export Summit will be produced by Manitoba Music in partnership with Music Nova Scotia, Canada s Music Incubator, and the National Music Centre. Manitoba Music will manage the design, production, marketing, and execution of the events including the call for submissions, coordinating logistics, and designing and delivering the training sessions. Manitoba Music will contract Music Nova Scotia to assist in program design and marketing, and coordinate the Music Export Summit East. Canada s Music Incubator will provide contract support in curriculum development, identify and contract speakers and presenters, create training materials, and coordinate training delivery. The National Music Centre will partner on a Masterclass event that will incorporate training as well as performances and audio and video recording sessions. Provincial MIAs will provide support in marketing and selecting participants.

Programming PASSPORT: Music Export Summit will take place in two parts, a classroom-based series of parallel summit events in February followed by a creative masterclass in April. Part One Music Export Summit West - Winnipeg (8-10 participants) Music Export Summit Indigenous - Winnipeg (6-8 participants) Music Export Summit East - Halifax (8-10 participants) This series of parallel sessions in Halifax and Winnipeg will provide classroom and discussion based programming with self-managed artists and managers. In the case of groups, one or two members who fulfill the self-management function will participate, not the whole group. The sessions will focus on management skills and knowledge and will not include performances. Creative development and marketing sessions will utilize media assets, recordings, and video. The sessions will be five days in length including a day to arrive and a day to depart. Three full days of programming plus travel days will keep the schedule tight and help make the program accessible for busy artists and managers. This will ensure that we lose the least number of participants because of the time commitment and scheduling. This is especially important given the short amount of time between the announcement and the summit dates. Part Two Music Export Summit Masterclass - NMC, Calgary (12 artists + managers) This follow-up session will include artists selected from the artist participants and artist rosters of the manager participants from part one. Selected artists will have the most pressing export opportunities and show the most promise for immediate success in export markets. Artists will be chosen by the selection committee. The Masterclass will make use of the facilities at the National Music Centre for discussions, panels, showcase performances, live streaming, recording and video production opportunities. This session will engage artists and managers in an evaluation of their export plan, as well as provide opportunities for the discussion and creation of media assets specific to those plans. Marketing and PR experts, video and recording producers, stylists and market experts will work directly with the artists to help bring their export plans forward to fruition. Training Overview 1. Importance and value of export for the Canadian music industry 2. The challenges and opportunities of the global release landscape 3. Market intelligence and specifics for target markets (UK, EU, USA) 4. Developing an export marketing plan

Training Delivery Export readiness training will be coordinated by Canada s Music Incubator in partnership with Manitoba Music and Music Nova Scotia. Training will be delivered by music industry professionals with extensive knowledge and success in preparing Canadian artists for international export. Training will include market intelligence and best practices, examination of Canadian export case studies, and hands-on development of skills and practical tools. Training Topics Business administration skills Market intelligence and research International marketing plans Financial planning and funding Copyright and IP management Live performance development Style and brand consultations Business structures, team building Revenue streams and projections International touring practices International labels, distribution International publishing, licensing International media and PR Pitching strategies and showcase/conference preparation Customs, immigration, taxes, duties Creation of media assets Export plan consultation Focus Territories : United Kingdom (UK); Germany, Switzerland, Austria (GSA); Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg (Benelux); Central/Eastern Europe, United States (USA). International Market Professionals Export market consultants and professionals from a variety of the target markets will present market intelligence and best practices for business in their market. These industry professionals will provide specific marketing information on various export markets, help artists and companies understand and improve their opportunities for success in export markets, and make suggestions of potential business partners in those markets. The presence of professionals from the target markets will be an essential component to the success of this initiative.

Outcomes The Canadian music industry is heavily invested in export marketing including through the work of Music Export Canada, Canadian Independent Music Association, FACTOR, the provincial music industry associations, and several other festivals, conferences, and organizations. These market development and market access activities including trade missions, export business plan development, and showcase support, connect artist entrepreneurs and music companies to decision makers and potential business partners in the broader national and international music industry by mounting trade missions, coordinating business-to-business opportunities, producing showcases for bands and artists, and raising awareness of Canada and the music made here in markets outside of the country. PASSPORT: Music Export Summit will fill a specific role in this export ecosystem by provided vital training and pre-export preparation to ensure that artists and companies participating in support export activities are adequately prepared to make the absolute most of the opportunity. PASSPORT: Music Export Summit will train at least 24 self-managed artists and/or artist managers and will lead to: music businesses adopting new export management/marketing practices music businesses expanding their business increase in export capacity for music businesses new business relationships in export markets new commercial products (albums, live tours) in export markets increase in the number of music businesses active in export markets This project will build on the successes of extensive export activity over past years, enabling program elements to be incremental for the best results. Execution of a development strategy in the music industry relies on building market knowledge and fostering relationships in new markets over time, laying business foundations within companies and supporting company growth, and allowing for the iterative process of product development. This program will create a cohort of Canadian artists and managers with the skills and knowledge to find success. Music industry development across Canada and around the world is taken on by specialist national and provincial industry organizations and associations. No other trade organization or government department provides the activities and services that this project is proposing for music industry development in Canada. Music export is highly targeted and specific to music events, conference, and festivals, and does not overlap with pan-sectoral trade shows or other national trade initiatives. Trade commissioners and trade agents in other markets seldom have the expertise to assist with the specifics of music market development work. This project will address the specific needs of the music industry while not overlapping with efforts in other areas.
