ICD-9-CM Coding Essentials What every CDI specialist needs to know Many clinical documentation improvement (CDI) specialists have strong clinical backgrounds, but their effectiveness as chart reviewers and physician educators is hampered by a lack of formal training in ICD-9-CM coding. To be truly effective in their profession, CDI specialists must combine clinical expertise with an understanding of the coding and documentation requirements of ICD-9-CM. Join us for ICD-9-CM Coding Essentials: What every CDI specialist needs to know and gain the knowledge you need to fully understand ICD-9-CM coding guidelines and the MS-DRGs system. Participants will also receive the latest updates and code changes for ICD-9-CM in 2010, as well as an introduction to ICD-10-CM. Overview This one-day seminar taught by Shannon McCall, RHIA, CCS, CCS-P, CPC, director of HIM/coding for HCPro, Inc., provides an in-depth session on ICD-9-CM inpatient coding, the MS-DRGs system, and the forthcoming switch to ICD-10-CM. Tailored for clinical documentation specialists, participants will walk away with a firm understanding of how to use the ICD-9-CM Manual, the fundamentals of principal diagnosis assignment, and how to assign the correct MS-DRG to cases with an MCC/CC, as well as non MCC/CC cases. CDI specialists who are familiar with coding will also walk away with valuable information on coding guidelines for problematic diagnoses, including postoperative anemia, altered mental status vs. encephalopathy, and sepsis/septicemia. McCall will demonstrate the organizational structure and use of the ICD-9-CM Manual. Participants will also learn how to assign the correct MS-DRG to cases and help avoid troublesome coder/cdi MS-DRG conflicts. Finally, McCall will introduce the fiscal year 2010 ICD-9-CM codes and any important changes to the IPPS and MS-DRGs. She will focus specifically on those codes and MS-DRGs that affect CDI specialists day-to-day medical record reviews and physician queries. To register, call 877/240-6586 or visit www.cdiassociation.com.
