American Legion Apple Valley Post 1776 News For God and Country WWW.POST1776.COM February 2013 Commander s Chatter Dick Watland Post 1776 Commander We are one month into the new year, I thank everyone for a great 2012 which flew by fast and I am looking for a great 2013 for all. Registration for the National Commander's breakfast is available with Joan Guse or John Wortman at 952-431- 1776. The date is February 7th at 8:00 AM cost is $7.00. All Legion family members from all posts are invited to attend. Gambling had its compliance review with the Minnesota Gambling Board everything went well, thanks to Marv Jarvis and all Gambling employees. We have averaged approx. 1100 members at Post 1776 I am asking for all members for help in 2013 to recruit one new Veteran to join Post 1776. You just need to (ask someone) and fill out a membership slip with a check for 35.00, then turn it into the front office or gambling booth. I will post our monthly gains each month. The goal for 2013 is 2000 members!!!! I need everyone's help to reach this goal. See page 3 for a membership application. A complete application is on-line at www.post1776.com. All Apple Valley Post 1776 members are welcome to attend any of the following meetings. Service Officer Rich Davey Here we are into our 2nd month of this new year. The last couple of months have been very busy with the Post doing exactly what we are supposed to be doing as a family. From the Post, Auxiliary, SAL and the Legion Riders, we have all contributed in some way or another to our community, whether it be to our schools, our Scouts, families in need and especially our Veterans. That's what it is all about. We are a very respected Post in our state and as your Post Service Officer, I am very proud of all of our members and staff. Let's keep up the good work. One piece of information I would like to pass on is, if you are being treated at the Minneapolis VA Hospital for some kind of illness and you go on vacation or "snowbird" out of state, be sure to let the VA know. If there is a VA clinic near the town you go to, register with that clinic as a "visitor" and your treatment can continue if there is an "issue". Until next month, take care and stay warm! For GOD and Country! Rich P.S. Does anyone know where this Legion is? Gambling Operations (House) Executive Membership 1st Tues. at 7:00 PM 2nd Tues. at 3:00 PM 2nd Tues. at 5:00 PM 3rd Tues. at 7:00 PM (HI Hats Band) will be in the banquet room from 1:30 to 4:30. More information and registration at www.fishingforlife.org SAL Stuff Bruce Bigler Commander Greetings to all I hope everyone's New Year is starting off well! January has arrived and finally gave us our cold weather, we knew would come eventually!!!! I hope everyone has their emergency kit in there car...(extra gloves, blanket, candles, flares, flashlight, energy snacks, and cell phone).it's better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it!!!!!!!!!! Our next S.A.L meeting is February 19, 2013. We had more members at our last meeting...but I want to see more members at our meeting in February. Our organization is only as good as our members and the volunteers!!!! Our next event is our meat raffle / bingo on February 9, 2013. Meat raffles starting at 11:30 and bingo starting at approx. 4:15. I will have volunteer signup sheets posted at the Legion entrance and on the board near the bar. Please remember, the money we make goes to helping veterans and their families. The more volunteers we have...the better things run. Let's all do our part. February 14 is Valentine s Day. Remember your SWEEHEART, (no one likes the DOG HOUSE.. it's cold outside!!! ) The S.A.L. car show date is official...august 17, 2013...it will be lot's of fun!!! Remember as always. SUPPORT OUR TROOPS AND THIER FAMILIES.AND HELP THE ONES WHO FINALLY CAME HOME!!! Bruce Bigler American Legion Post 1776 SAL Breakfast Note: The Club will no longer serve breakfast on Fridays, as of March 1 st. Road Less Traveled I hope everyone s New Year has started off good. We look forward to your continued support through the New Year. We thank all of you, that have supported us through the years!! Remember "The Flag does not fly because of the wind. The Flag Flies because of the breath of our Military, and the men and women who gave their dying breath for this country". Gambling Updates Post 1776 Hello again Fellow Legionnaires and Legion Family, The year is already into its second month of 2013, just where is the time going? The Gambling Operation is doing well; our Wednesday evening Bar Bingo being run by Don Hereau who is also our Sergeant at Arms has been bringing in a lot of new faces as well as a lot of our regulars. Rich Jensen is doing a great job of calling out all of those winning prize numbers. Supporting cast is John Wortman, Dale Solomson, Denise Herskind and our ever present Doorman Randy Cox along with Bob Doebel. For those of you that can t make it to our meetings I ll try to keep you up to date with what we are doing for Veterans and the Community. The Post Home benefited from Gambling paying $3600.00 in Lawful Expenses for them. My favorite Charity of all the State of Minnesota received over $22,000.00 in taxes on gambling. The States Legion Commander was given a donation of $1000.00 towards his Commanders Project. We found that by holding the January meeting on its regularly scheduled day we had no fund requests; I guess it helps when the date was New Year s Day! If you ever want to see a list of monthly expenditures just stop by my table before you get your free drink from the Commander for just attending the meeting. Electronic Pull Tabs are right around the corner, and I am still studying the best course we can take with Gambling as the State and the game vendor get the Lion s share of the proceeds. Time will tell! Our Legion Baseball season is in its infancy of the 2013 season with Bruce Young the Baseball Commissioner submitting his budget. It is almost $30,000.00 but it has remaining very close year after year; we will be covering that expense over a five month period as it has been approved by the General Membership. Another Compliance Review by the Gambling Control Board has been completed, and other than a few minor things (they have to find something) we did exceptionally well and will get the results shortly and I will be sharing them with you. Till next month! Marv Jarvis Gambling Manager Post 1776 Newsletter 3
