About the authors Derek Wanless has prepared two significant reports for the government on the NHS, Securing Our Future Health: Taking a Long-Term View (2002), and Securing Good Health for the Whole Population (2004). Also, in March 2006 his report on social care Securing Good Care for Older People: Taking a long-term view was published by the King s Fund. He graduated in mathematics from King s College, Cambridge, and then qualified as a member of the Institute of Statisticians and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers, of which he was President in 1999. He is a banker, having joined NatWest Group in 1970, and progressing to become its Group Chief Executive from 1992 until 1999. He is currently a Director of Northern Rock plc, Chairman of Northumbrian Water Group, Vice Chairman of the Statistics Commission, and a Member of the Board for Actuarial Standards. John Appleby is Chief Economist at the King s Fund. John has researched and published widely on many aspects of health service funding, rationing, resource allocation and performance. He previously worked as an economist with the NHS in Birmingham and London, and at the universities of Birmingham and East Anglia as senior lecturer in health economics. He is a visiting professor at the Department of Economics at City University. John s current work includes research into the impact of patient choice and Payment by Results. He is also acting as an adviser to the Northern Ireland Department of Finance and Personnel in respect of the implementation of his recommendations following a review of health and social care services in Northern Ireland. Anthony Harrison is a Senior Associate of the King s Fund. He has published extensively on the future of hospital care in the United Kingdom, the Private Finance Initiative, waiting list policies and publicly funded research and development. Darshan Patel was seconded to work on this publication for the King s Fund from the British Dental Association, where he is the Association s economist. He has specialist knowledge of the UK dental market and played an important role in helping to develop the Association s policy, as well as influencing government policy, in the run-up to the reforms of NHS dentistry that took place in April 2006. In 2004 he co-authored the Office of Health Economics publication The Economics of Dental Care with Professor Ray Robinson of the London School of Economics.
