WEST OTTAWA INTERNAL SCHOLARSHIPS Dear Senior of the Class of 2012: Each year numerous scholarships are presented to West Ottawa seniors at the Senior Honors Convocation. These scholarships come from memorial and honorary funds, businesses, and community organizations. This year's Convocation for the Class of 2012 will be held on Thursday, May 31, 2012 at 8:30 a.m. in the West Ottawa High School North Gymnasium. Scholarship recipients are determined by the scholarship sponsors working along with the West Ottawa Scholarship Committee. A basic philosophy is that the awards are spread out amongst as many different seniors as possible. Every senior in the Class of 2012 is encouraged to complete the Internal Scholarship Application on the reverse side of this letter. Complete the attached checklist as well. Your name will be entered as an applicant for the scholarships that you check. RETURN THIS STAPLED PACKET AFTER FILLING OUT THE WEST OTTAWA INTERNAL SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION AND THE CHECKLIST PAGES TO THE NORTH GUIDANCE OFFICE BY FRIDAY, MARCH 23. There are once again many scholarships offered through the Holland/Zeeland Community Foundation. The Community Foundation application is available online at www.cfhz.org. Students must complete the application online then print one for each CFHZ scholarship for which they wish to apply. ACADEMIC CHALLENGE OF EXCELLENCE (A.C.E.) ENGLISH SCHOLARSHIP in honor of Patricia Seif and Lorelle Eberly. This scholarship is intended for students who have highly challenged themselves in the area of English studies by taking multiple high level English courses. Student must have been accepted and planning to attend a four year college or university in the fall of 2012 and aim to pursue a career related to English. Related extracurricular activities in areas such as Broadcast Journalism, debate, Annuals Journalism, Newspaper Journalism, theatre are desirable. Student contributions and leadership in school and community will be considered. ACADEMIC CHALLENGE OF EXCELLENCE (A.C.E.) MATHEMATICS SCHOLARSHIP in memory of Kimberly Pike. This scholarship is intended for students who have highly challenged themselves in the area of math studies by taking multiple high level math courses. Student must have been accepted and planning to attend a four year college or university in the fall of 2012 and aim to pursue a career related to mathematics. Student contributions and leadership in school and community will also be considered. B.J. BERGHORST-MCAULIFFE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP - Scholarships for seniors planning a career in education. Special consideration will be given to students active in the Arts (art, music, writing, drama, and dance), students involved with the community, and students who strive for excellence. ARLEN & JULIA BRENNER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP A one time award for a senior planning to pursue college studies in business, transportation, or other technical field. Student must be enrolled in a technical program, 2-year college, or 4 year college for the fall of 2012. MR C BAND SCHOLARSHIP A scholarship for a student planning to pursue a career as a band instructor, K-12 music teacher, professional musician or music related profession. Student must be enrolled in a technical program, 2 or 4 year college for the fall of 2012. DESIGN PLUS SCHOLARSHIP A $500 scholarship intended for a student planning to pursue a career in architecture, interior design, or a related technical field. DOUG ELENBAAS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP $200 scholarship for a student with a strong commitment to athletics. REL GORES ARTISTIC SCHOLARSHIP A $1000 award to be given to a student entering either the field of theater or art. Student must be enrolled in a 2 or 4 year college degree program for the fall of 2012. VIOLET HANSEN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP This award is intended for one or two students with plans to go into elementary education. Emphasis is on students who have significant financial need. Student must be enrolled in a 2 or 4 year college degree program in education for the fall of 2012. EDWARD & EDNA HINDERT LIBRARY AWARD - $200 to each of two students for recognition of their devotion to learning, use of the library, and love of reading.

NAME HOLLAND FRIENDS OF ART SCHOLARSHIP Awarded to a student who shows exceptional talent, promise, leadership and dedication in the field of the visual arts. Student must be planning to attend an art school or major in art. See Mrs. Propst for special application. H.O.P.E. Scholarship The Hispanic Organization for Pride in Education will be providing a scholarship for an exemplary Hispanic student. This student should be a role model for others, having made solid academic achievements while at West Ottawa High School as well as been involved in other activities or employment. Student must have been accepted to a 2 or 4 year college with plans to attend in the fall of 2012. EVELYN M. JOYNER MEMORIAL BUSINESS SCHOLARSHIP A significant renewable award for a student planning to pursue a career in business or accounting. Must have 3.0 high school GPA and be enrolled in a 2 or 4 year college for the fall of 2012. S. CHRISTA MCAULIFFE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND - Scholarships provided by West Ottawa faculty and staff for seniors with plans to enter a career in education. Academic performance, contributions to the community, commitment to a career in teaching, and previous experience working with children will be considered. Student must be enrolled in a 2 or 4 year college for the fall of 2012. JOEY METZELAARS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP - $1000 scholarship for a student who has been involved in the WOHS athletic program, particularly lacrosse. Seniors who may have experienced the death of their mother prior to graduation are also encouraged to apply for this scholarship. Student must be accepted to and planning to attend a two or four year college. RICHARD RITHAMEL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP $250 scholarship for a student who has made a significant contribution to the track team while maintaining solid academic performance. MRS. MARY SKOGLUND LAST CLASS SCHOLARSHIP - $1,000 scholarship for a student who had Mrs. Skoglund as a teacher at Macatawa Bay sixth grade in 2005-2006. Students must be accepted to either a community college or a four year college or to a recognized technical school that requires tuition. Students must also submit a separate application to be found in the guidance office and due on April 13. The recipient will be determined by means of a random drawing of all qualified applicant names. SENIOR CLASS SCHOLARSHIPS - Scholarships for students who have made significant contributions to the Senior Class of 2012, have a recommended GPA of 3.0 or higher and who plan to attend a 2 or 4-year college. ARATI SHARANGPANI MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP - $500 for a West Ottawa senior orchestra brass player to assist in meeting future educational needs. The candidate will have demonstrated academic potential and have made significant contributions to the W.O.H.S. Music Department. JENNIFER SIERSMA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP A scholarship for a senior player on the girl s soccer team. Student must have been accepted to a two or four-year college or have plans to pursue technical training. Must display leadership along with dedication and love for the sport of soccer. ANDREW SMITH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP $500 scholarship for a West Ottawa senior planning to work towards a technical, two or four-year degree. Minimum GPA of 2.5 with involvement in work, school or community activities. Student must exemplify dependability, modesty, genuine concern for others and hard work. STUDENT SENATE SCHOLARSHIPS - Scholarships for seniors who have made significant contributions to Student Senate during their high school career. PHILIP A. WALDRON SCHOLARSHIP - A scholarship given annually to a senior who has a GPA of 3.8 or higher, has taken a challenging curriculum, and has demonstrated broad interests through participation in a variety of school and/or community activities. WESLEY WALDRON SCHOLARSHIP - A scholarship given annually to a senior who has a strong GPA, has taken a challenging curriculum, and has demonstrated broad interests through participation in a variety of school and/or community activities. WEST OTTAWA MEMORIAL FUND SCHOLARSHIPS - A limited number of scholarships given to collegebound seniors who have strong academic achievement who have not received any other internal scholarships.

The following WEST OTTAWA scholarships require an essay or separate application due to North Guidance by Friday, April 13. AMERICAN LEGION POST #28 SCHOLARSHIPS Student must be a direct descendent of a Post 28 member or deceased member. Student must have an above average high school record and be planning to attend college. A special application is available in the Guidance Office and must be mailed directly to Post 28 no later than April 15, 2012. TONYA DAMS MEMORIAL ART SCHOLARSHIP A $1000 scholarship for a student planning to pursue a 2 or 4 year degree in the fine arts. This scholarship is intended for a student who has financial need. Please write an essay addressed to The Tonya Dams Family telling them what art means to you and how it has impacted your life. Also explain what you have done in the greater community (outside of school) with your art and what you hope to do with your art talent in the future. Essay due to WOHS Guidance by Friday, April 13. CHARLES C. FERRELL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP This $1,000 scholarship is for a WOHS senior who shows promise and strong potential. Must be a hard worker who will succeed in college. There must be some financial need. Student can have an average GPA. Student must be enrolled in a 2 or 4 year college for the fall. Turn in an essay to the Ferrell Family telling about your school contributions, future plans and why you need a scholarship. Essay due to WOHS Guidance by Friday, April 13. LAWRENCE HILLDORE MEMORIAL SERVICE SCHOLARSHIP A $1000 scholarship for a student who has given outstanding service to their community. Turn in an essay addressed to The Lawrence Hilldore Family telling about your community service experiences, what your community service has meant to you, your career goals, and your educational plans. Essay due to the WOHS Guidance Office by Friday, April 13. EVELYN M. JOYNER MEMORIAL BUSINESS SCHOLARSHIP A significant renewable award for a student planning to pursue a career in business or accounting. Must have 3.0 high school GPA and be enrolled in a 2 or 4 year college for the fall. Please write an essay addressed to Evelyn Joyner Memorial Scholarship explaining your interest in a career in business and why you have financial need. Essay due to the WOHS Guidance Office by Friday, April 13. KONING/KIEKOVER SPORTS MEDICINE OR ATHLETIC TRAINING SCHOLARSHIP A $500 scholarship for a senior planning to pursue a career in sports medicine, athletic training, kinesiology, physical therapy or related field. To apply students are asked to write an essay about how they became interested in this field, what area specifically they hope to pursue, and how they plan to contribute to others in this career. This essay must be submitted to the WOHS Guidance Office by Friday, April 13. I.F.D. LEADERS IN MATHEMATICS SCHOLARSHIP Three $2,000 scholarships for seniors planning to pursue a degree in mathematics or engineering or related field. Student must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and have a record of extra curricular, community service, and leadership activities. Applicants must be accepted into a four year program of study at an accredited higher education institution. Financial need will be a consideration. Students are asked to write an essay to the IFD Leaders in Mathematics Scholarship Committee answering the question, How do you see mathematics influencing your future. In addition, a recommendation titled I.F.D. LEADERS IN MATHEMATICS SCHOLARSHIP from a past or present WOHS mathematics instructor must be submitted to the Guidance Office by Friday, April 13. LAKEWOOD ELEMENTARY SCHOLARSHIP - To be awarded to a senior who attended Lakewood Elementary School for a minimum of three consecutive years (one of which must have been 5 th grade). Student must have maintained a 3.0 GPA while at WOHS. Lakewood s Student Council will match the funds raised from a student raffle. The minimum amount of the scholarship will be $500. To apply, please write a letter addressed to the Lakewood Student Council. The letter must include memories about your years at Lakewood, experiences while at WOHS, extra-curricular activities, volunteer work, employment, financial needs, college or technical school you plan to attend, and future career aspirations. Submit this letter to the Guidance Office by Friday, April 13. CHRISTINE OBERSTADT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP - $1000 for a student in good academic standing with a GPA of 2.5 or above. Must have plans to further their post-secondary education at an accredited 2 or 4 year college. Looking for an individual whose personal character and daily actions promotes diversity, inclusivity and acceptance amongst the WOHS student body and their community. Please submit an essay titled Christine Oberstadt Memorial Scholarship stating in what ways you have displayed these characteristics. Essay due to the Guidance Office by Friday, April 13.

ROTARY SCHOLARSHIP A $1,000 scholarship given to a senior who has a GPA of between 2.5 and 3.2. Consideration will be given to students who have financial need, a demonstrated effort to learn, and a strong desire to continue his/her education beyond high school. A special application with essay instructions must be picked up in the Guidance Office and is due to Guidance by Friday, April 13. MRS. MARY SKOGLUND LAST CLASS SCHOLARSHIP - $1,000 scholarship for a student who had Mrs. Skoglund as a teacher at Macatawa Bay sixth grade in 2005-2006. Students must be accepted to either a community college or a four year college or to a recognized technical school that requires tuition. Students must also submit a separate application to be found in the guidance office and due on April 13. This must be signed by three teachers who will vouch for the student s character and good citizenship in the school and community. The recipient will be determined by means of a random drawing of all qualified applicant names. DEBRA STASKIEWICZ MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP - This $1,000 scholarship is intended for a senior who plans a career in education. Preference will be given to a student planning to work with special needs students. Extra-curricular activities, community activities and GPA are factors. A special application must be picked up in the Guidance Office and is due back by Friday, April 13. VIETNAM VETERANS OF AMERICA SCHOLARSHIP - The Holland chapter of the Viet Nam Veterans of America offers a scholarship for children or grandchildren of any veteran (includes National Guard or Reserves). The DD Form 214 is required or the equivalent for National Guard veterans. A special application must be picked up in the Guidance Office and must be postmarked no later than April 28, 2012. The application includes a counselor recommendation, so see your counselor well before the due date! WAUKAZOO ELEMENTARY SCHOLARSHIP - To be awarded to a senior who attended Waukazoo Elementary School for a minimum of two years and has been a 5 th grade graduate of Waukazoo. Student must have maintained a 2.8 GPA while at WOHS. Funds for this scholarship were generated by efforts of the current year s Student Council and students! To apply, please write a letter addressed to the Waukazoo Student Council stating something about your experiences and memories at Waukazoo, WOHS experiences, extra-curricular activities, volunteer work, employment, financial needs, career goals, and college or technical school you plan to attend. Try to keep the letter to one page if possible. Submit this letter to the Guidance Office by Friday, April 13. WEST OTTAWA EDUCATION ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP - Seniors with a career goal of teaching, a good academic record, good character and a variety of school and community activities may apply. A special application must be picked up in the Guidance Office and returned by Friday, April 13. WORLD PANTHER DIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIP For a senior who has embraced and encouraged acceptance of those from diverse backgrounds. Students with special leadership in school activities that have promoted diversity will be given special consideration for this award. Please write an essay about your commitment to diversity.
