3 Member Spotlight Never Missing an Opportunity to Assist Our Clients Jennifer Pederson, CPA NCCC Treasurer An advisor to private companies for nearly 40 years, Cohen & Company helps businesses and their owners identify and seize opportunities to drive profitability and minimize tax obligations. From tax requirements levied by legislation such as the Affordable Care Act to best practices to help keep you compliant, our team proactively advises clients from day one. For example, one recurring tax issue we often counsel business owners on is the responsibility to properly classify workers as employees or independent contractors. Adding fire to the already burning flame, late last fall the Department of Labor (DOL) issued an Administrator s Opinion stating it will team up with the IRS to more actively enforce these classifications. That means if you re a business using independent contractors, particularly ones not under a business-tobusiness contract, you need to ensure now more than ever that they truly are independent contractors in the eyes of the IRS. If not, you risk fines, penalties and interest if subjected to an audit. Our Never Miss Blog discusses the issue of classification, including voluntary disclosure opportunities and potential safe harbors, as well as the top 20 questions the IRS uses to determine if a worker is an independent contractor or employee in more detail. With one of the largest tax and audit departments in Northeast Ohio, comprised of approximately 155 audit and 145 tax practitioners, and one of the most technically competent teams in the profession, we are equipped to stay on top of the numerous issues that impact our clients. The third largest CPA firms in Northeast Ohio and 75 th in the nation, our more than 400 professionals also provide integrated services beyond tax and accounting such as strategic business planning, transaction services, cloud accounting, management consulting, estate planning and wealth management. If you re a business using independent contractors, particularly ones not under a business-to-business contract, you need to ensure now more than ever that they truly are independent contractors in the eyes of the IRS. As a firm, service, quality, innovation and fun are the principals that drive us. Our extensive resources mean we can provide the technical depth of a national firm, but we remain immersed in the local and regional business environment and focused on serving our clients in exceptional ways. We invite you to engage with us to learn more. Reach out to Jenn Pederson, CPA, at jpederson@cohencpa.com, a tax manager at the firm and North Coast Chamber of Commerce member who works closely with growing companies and their accounting departments. Or connect with us at www.cohencpa.com or on Twitter @CohenCPA, LinkedIn or Facebook.
