What is the ERC? Basic Principles An autonomous pan-european funding body to support frontier research Set up by the EU in 2007, led by scientists, supported by ERC Executive Agency Applications can be made in any field of research Principal Investigators (PIs) from anywhere in the world can apply provided their host institution is established in EU MS/AC Scientific excellence as the only valid evaluation criterion International peer-review (panel members appointed by ScC, from 49 countries) Significant budget to encourage the highest quality research in Europe & to attract the best scientists in Europe/ in the world http://erc.europa.eu

Evaluation of ERC Projects 25 panels (Panel Chair and 10-16 panel members): PE (10), LS (9), SH (6) http://erc.europa.eu/evaluation-panels Evaluation criterion: excellence of the research project and the PI Evaluation elements applying to the excellence of the research project and the PI can be found in the ERC Work Programme 2015, p. 31-32!
Evaluation Elements Applying to the Excellence of the PI does not apply for StG/CoG Step 2 fully agree agree partially disagree partially strongly disagree Evaluation Summary Reports 2013
Evaluation Elements Applying to the Excellence of the Research Project (StG, CoG, AdG) Step 1 Step 2 What is the challenge? What competitive edge do you and your team have compared to other efforts worldwide? ERC Work Programme 2015, p. 31
Outcome of Evaluation Restrictions for Submission of Proposals (under the ERC WP 2015 ) Step 1 Step 2 A - is of sufficient quality to pass to step A - fully meets the ERC's excellence 2 of the evaluation criterion and is recommended for funding if sufficient funds are available B - is of high quality but not sufficient to B - meets some but not all elements of the pass to step 2 of the evaluation ERC's excellence criterion, will not be funded C - is not of sufficient quality to pass to step 2 of the evaluation PI whose proposal was evaluated as category C in the StG, CoG or AdG calls for proposals under Work Programme 2014 may not submit a proposal to the StG, CoG or AdG calls for proposals made under Work Programme 2015 and 2016. PI whose proposal is finally evaluated as category B in the StG, CoG or AdG calls for proposals under Work Programme 2014 may not submit a proposal to the StG, CoG or AdG calls for proposals made under Work Programme 2015. A PI may submit proposals to different ERC frontier research grant calls made under the same Work Programme, but only the first eligible proposal will be evaluated. Be realistic! Is it the right time for you to apply now?
Why to Apply for an ERC Grant? Independence, recognition & visibility Assessment of the working conditions after applying to ERC PI s own choice of topic PI s own choice of team 5-year financial autonomy Grants are portable ERC has become a quality label Annual Report on the ERC activities and achievements in 2014
