Have you been pondering about upgrading your automation equipment or if welding or cutting automation will benefit your production time, quality, or costs? Brandon E. Pleasant, Inside Sales representative for Gullco International, Cleveland, has assembled facts and figures to answer these questions at the Cleveland Section s February 10 th meeting. Focusing on Why Automation, he will briefly touch on types of automation before honing in on Fixed Automation. Using a combination of photo and video slides of Industrial Welding Applications, Brandon will discuss the need for welding automation as well as introduce types of Industrial Welding Applications, solutions and benefits. Gullco International, Newmarket Ontario, manufactures automated welding carriages, cutting carriages, gouging machines, welding automation and accessories for applications around the world. After graduating from Kean University, Brandon gained knowledge of the welding automation products as he began seven years ago with Gullco as the Warehouse Manager in Cleveland, then advanced to Repair Technician/Technical Repair Manager, and currently works in Inside Sales/Technical Sales for the firm. Stud Welding in the Spotlight Ian Houston, Construction Engineering Manager, and Edd Turner, Senior Field Sales Representative, for Nelson Stud Welding, Elyria, drew questions and discussions and instructed attendees how to operate stud welding equipment during the section s January 13th meeting. The team highlighted how stud welding products and applications, and design aids can assist engineers and shop owners improve production operations and help reduce costs. Clinic to Provide In-Depth Study of D1.1 Code Need to learn more about the current AWS D1.1 Code? Then join the six-session American Welding Society D1.1 Code Clinic that starts February 25, 2015 in Cleveland. Cleveland Section Education Committee Chairman Dan Harrison has signed on industry experts to present an in-depth study of the latest D1.1 code during the sessions. Plus, attendees can earn 18 hours of Professional Development Credits. Location The Code Clinic will run Wednesday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m. starting February 25 at Lincoln Electric, 22801 St. Clair Avenue, Euclid, OH 44117 Reservations Requested, Call Mary Alice Beck, 216-383-4753, or email, MaryAlice_Beck@lincolnelectric.com. Cost The cost, including the current D1.1 Code book and study guide, for AWS members is $600.00 and for nonmembers $695.00. The non-member cost includes an AWS membership. District 10 CWI Roundtable Mark your calendar for Saturday, March 7, 2015 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Lincoln Electric for a roundtable discussion on the different gauges that are in the marketplace are used, why people like them and why, pros and cons of different gauges, calibration, wear on performance, etc. The Lincoln Electric plant is at 22801 St. Clair Avenue, Euclid, OH 44117, a few miles west of the I-90 I- 271 interchange between E222 St. and Babbitt Road. At this CWI Roundtable, CWIs from District 10 are encouraged to join in the show & tell to give other CWIs ideas of types of tools that can improve their inspection work. The three-hour roundtable comes with PDH credit. Email richaharris@windstream.net to save a seat. Praxair Funds Welding Scholarships Praxair Inc. will fund more than $200,000 in scholarships over the next five years for AWS and SkillsUSA. The scholarships will support the education and hands-on training of student welders in the U.S. The Cleveland Section will receive $2,000 a year for the next five years for scholarships. The Application Deadline is March 1, 2015 for the following Fall Term. Basic applicant criteria includes: resident of Ohio, at least a high school senior and 18 years old, have a 2.5 overall grade point average, applying to a certificate welding program or to a two-year or four-year degree focused on welding at a college/university within the Cleveland Section. Proof of financial need is not required to qualify. For more detailed eligibility criteria and application information contact: AWS Foundation, Inc., 8669 N. W. 36 Street, #130, Miami, FL 33166. 800-443-9353, extension 250. The Cleveland Scholarship Committee will determine the recipient in late spring or early summer of this year. No awards will be paid to the recipient. All awards are for tuition and fees only. The AWS Foundation will pay directly to the academic institution. The Praxair fund the scholarships through the firm s Praxair Distribution Inc. (PDI) subsidiary. PDI supplies gases and welding-related equipment in the U.S. In supporting the AWS scholarship program, PDI hopes to call attention to high paying jobs in welding industry, help to address the shortage of welders in the United States, and improve access to scholarship dollars for students pursuing a career in welding. Nominees for Section Offices The officers of the Cleveland Section are taking the names of nominees for section offices to start the annual election process. Elected section officers include the chairman, first and second vice chairmen, secretary, and treasurer, and a member at large. All current Cleveland Section AWS members can run for these offices. The election will be held during the April meeting. In addition to the section offices, the volunteers are welcome to help promote welding and support the Cleveland Section. There are currently openings on various committees. Many of these openings only require one to three hours of your time each month. Talk to any of the section officers or board members for more details.

Got A Hungry Buddy? Pass the word: First time attendees at a Cleveland Section meeting eat for FREE when you flash your AWS membership card. The adult rate is $17.00, student rate is $9.00, just show your school identification. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. with a social hour, meal, and speaker or plant tour that often qualifies for PDH credits. Cleveland Section Library Need to review a code before bidding on a new job? Got an inspection question? Seeking material specifications? You may find answers to these and many other questions at the Cleveland Section s library of AWS books, codes, and other publications. Give librarian Mark Demchak, owner of Total Quality Testing, a call to set a time to use the library (216-676-6900). CWI Seminars and Exams Two seminars and certification exams to qualify as an AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) are scheduled for July and October 2015 in Cleveland. The first seminar runs July 12-17, 2015, and the exam is Saturday, July 18. The second seminar dates are October 25-30, and October 31 for the exam. Apply early and register for either of these seminars and exams in order to meet the application deadlines: June 8 for the July seminar and exam, and September 21 for the October seminar and exam. The worldwide welding industry recognizes the CWI certification as a method to help ensure the highest level of quality workmanship. The seminar provides a way for skilled and knowledgeable individuals, with limited time to study, to prepare for the AWS certification exam. Seasoned instructors teach the material you need to know and how to use and understand the latest standards. PLEASE NOTE: To take the AWS certification exam, you must submit an exam application separately to the AWS Certification Department six weeks prior to the exam date you have selected. Scholarships Help Complete Degrees, Improve Skill Levels The Cleveland Section scholarships recipients range from students just learning to weld to students enrolled in four-year university degree programs, to career welders learning a new process, or returning to college. The Cleveland Section has three named scholarships, the John Gerken, the Jack Buck, and the Ray Sacha. Each of these awards has a specific focus. The Gerken Award helps pay for welding education at the community college and university level for up to four years. The student earning the Buck Award will attend the Lincoln Electric Welding School to learn pipe welding. The Sacha Award is to develop welding skills for students pursuing a post secondary degree in a welding related program and will have their tuition covered at the Lincoln Electric Welding School. These scholarships are awarded to residents within the Cleveland Section boundaries -- Sandusky to Ashtabula, Cleveland to Akron. It is not necessary to be an AWS member or related to an AWS member to receive a scholarship. Plus, the Section administers an annual $2,000-a-year scholarship for the next five years for Praxair Inc. This scholarship supports the education and hands-on training of welding and metal fabrication students. For scholarship details contact our Scholarship Chairman, Bob Gardner at 440-286-4590. Your skills and just two or three hours a month will continue the strong technical education programs, activities, and scholarships that support the welding industry in the Cleveland area.
