Course: Psychosocial Interventions in Migration, Displacement and Emergency IV Edition - A.Y. 2013/2014 CALL FOR APPLICATIONS ART. 1 General information The Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna di Studi Universitari e di Perfezionamento, Pisa, Italy, in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) is offering a Course in Psychosocial Interventions in Migration, Displacement and Emergency. The Course will take place at the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna s campus in Pisa, from 12 th to 24 th May 2014. Classes will be spread from Monday to Saturday, for a total of 12 days and for an average of 8 hours per day. The language of instruction will be English. ART. 2 Curricula and Learning Objectives With its 4th edition, the Course intends to respond to the need for specialized knowledge and specific psychosocial support and mental health care in emergency settings as well as in other migration situations. To this effect it offers 2 distinct curricula: Psychosocial support in Emergency and Psychosocial support in Migration. At the moment of applying for the course candidates shall indicate which curriculum they intend to apply for. The course will provide a given frame of understanding of the psychosocial dimension of migration, displacement and crisis- all while presenting affected societies, as well as of the processes within the migration cycle of vulnerable groups, harmonized ethics, approaches and tools associated with psychosocial support. The course will enable participants to acknowledge the complexity of MHPSS interventions in crisis situations or during the migration process, conceptualize holistic responses, understand the interrelation of the different sectorial responses and gain advanced specific knowledge in each sector of intervention. The course will have a practical orientation, and will rely heavily on case studies to enhance participants skills and abilities to effectively design psychosocial support interventions. Practical exercises will include advanced role-playing and simulations. Ample space will be devotedd to testimonies and considerations drawn from the personal experience of trainers and participants. ART. 3 Structure & Contents The two curricula will share a common core of coursework covering aspects that are relevant to both emergency and migration, supplemented by 2 specialized modules covering elements that are unique to each curriculum. The common core will give an overview of both specific psychosocial programming and psychosocial approaches to different dimensions of humanitarian assistance in post crisis situations and during the migration process of different vulnerable groups, such as: a) Mental health and psychosocial paradigms in migration and displacement: psychological, social, cultural and anthropological perspectives. b) How to foster a non-harmful humanitarian assistance in emergency and non-harmful migration assistance in migration. c) Principles of psychological counseling d) Care for the most vulnerable and referral e) Medical/non-medical responsess f) Psychological First aid The specialized module on Emergency will focus on: g) International standards in MHPSS in Emergencies and legal framework 1

h) Participatory needs assessment i) MHPSS in Camp Management and Coordination j) Small scale conflict management and transitional justice k) Creative and art based interventions l) Emergency psychosocial project cycle while the specialized module on Migration will focus on: m) IOM Programming in vulnerablee migration and legal framework n) Psychopathology of migration o) Analysis of system deficits p) Psychosocial assistance to migrants: 1: Victims of Trafficking, 2: Unaccompanied Minors, 3: Vulnerable returnees q) Reflections and review of personal experiences with experts Contents will be organized in different didactic units, depending on the curriculum chosen by participants: The curriculum on Psychosocial support in emergency will include the following didactic units: 1. Epistemology, systems, international standards, legal framework, theories 2. Tools & standards for psychosocial considerations in basic services and security 3. Tools & standards for psychosocial considerations in family and community supports 4. Tools & standards for psychosocial focused services 5. Understanding of specialized services The curriculum on Psychosocial support in migration will include the following didactic units: 1. Epistemology, systems, international standards, legal framework, theories 2. Tools & standards for psychosocial considerations for victims of trafficking 3. Tools & standards for psychosocial considerations for unaccompanied minors 4. Tools and standards for psychosocial assistance in reception centers and return 5. Understanding of specialized services The specialized module on Migration will include the following didactic units: 1. Introduction to IOM programming in migration, legal framework, psychopathology and systemic approach to migration 2. Psychosocial assistance to victims of trafficking, unaccompanied minors, and assistance in reception centers and return ART. 4 Entry Requirements & Available Places The course addresses the needs of psychologists, social workers, educators-teachers, medical doctors and psychiatrists, nurses, applied artists (e.g. dance therapists), humanitarian workers, migration experts, emergency experts, development workers or similar, who meet the following minimum requirements: Have at least a 3 years University degree or equivalent in relevant disciplines, issued by a University institution or equivalent. Have at least 2 years of work experience in a related field. Have a proficient working knowledge of English. Knowledge of any other language and/or any further relevant training, voluntary or professional experience would be an asset. Relevant publications are also an advantage. Applicants must meet these requirements at the time of the application. The course can accept up to 40 participants, tentatively 20 for each curriculum. In case it is not possible to reach the quota of admitted students in any of the two curricula, places will be used for the other. 2

Each curriculum will be activated with no less than 10 participants and the overall course will be activated with a minimum of 34 participants. 20 places out of 40 (10 for each curriculum) are reserved to qualified IOM professionals/consultants that will be identified directly by IOM following an internal selection. The remaining 20 places (10 for each curriculum) will be assigned by the Scuola to qualified candidates following a public selection process, as per art. 5 and 6 of the present call. In case it is not possible to reach the quota of foreseen admitted students in any of the 2 selections managed by the Scuola and the IOM respectively, places will be offered to reserve candidates of the other selection process, on the basis of merit. Exclusively for the Emergency curriculum: up to a maximum of 5 places (out of the 20 available for this curriculum) may be made available to interested applicants of the past 2 editions (2012 and 2013) who were admitted to the course with a score of at least 80/100. Said places shall be assigned on a first-come first-served basis. Exclusively for the Migration curriculum: up to a maximum of 8 more places (in addition to the 20 available for this curriculum) may be made available to former participants for the attendance of the specialized module of this curriculum, upon payment of a reduced tuition fee. Said places shall be assigned on a first-come first-served basis. ART. 5 Application Procedures Interested IOM candidates shall refer directly to their Office for applications, or contact: gschinina@iom.int. All other candidates to be selected by the Scuola shall apply online at: www.sssup.it/psycho2014/applications. The selection process managed by the Scuola will be held in two rounds. The application deadline for the first round is set on 10 March 2014 at 12 CET, while the application deadline for the second round is set on 3 April 2014. Applicants are strongly encouraged to apply for admission in the first round. This is especially valid for those who are citizens of non EU countries in order to have enough time to obtain their visa. The online application system comprises: 1. Registration and login procedurere (create a User ID and Password ) 2. N. 7 pages of questions, which will require candidates to specify: a. Surname, name, place and date of birth, citizenship b. The specific curriculum (on Emergency or Migration) they intend to apply for c. Address and contact details for any communication and willingness to notify any changes in contact details d. Consent to be interviewed by phone if deemed relevant by the selection committee e. University degree(s), grading and awarding university institution f. Relevant publications (if any) g. Relevant training experience (if any) h. Relevant work experience including present position and years of service i. Relevant volunteering experience (if any) j. Knowledge of English and of any other language k. Motivation statement l. Whether they are self-sponsorednomination letter from the latter must be provided) or sponsored by any organization or their employer (if that is the case, a m. Whether they ask to be considered for an eventual financial support, and whether they would accept a position in the course without said support 3. Uploading of CV/résumé in pdf or word format. In case of failure of the online application system, applicants are advised to contact the Course Secretariat at a.lenci@sssup.it. Late applications, or applications missing any mandatory information will not be taken into consideration. On the first day of the course, successful applicants will have to sign and hand in to the course Secretariat a hard copy of the application form. If requested, they will also have to provide evidence of university qualifications and work experiences as stated at the time of the application. Missing supporting documents as well as lack of correspondence with the information specified on the application will result in the applicant s exclusion from the course. 3

ART. 6 Selection Criteria The selection process managed by the Scuola is carried out on the basis of a review of the candidates application forms and CVs. An ad hoc Selection Commission will select the applicants by awarding up to 100, based on the following criteria: 1. Relevant training in the sector (including BA, MA, PhD) up to 20 2. Relevant work experiences (and years of service/duration of employment) up to 23 3. Remarkable relevant volunteering experience up to 7 4. Language skills 5. Publications if relevant 6. Motivation statement up to 10 up to 7 up to 23 7. Candidates who work on relevant issues related to the course within government in developing Countries, international organizations or cooperation offices, and/or who are supported by sponsoring organizations/institutions up to 10. Only candidates scoring a minimum of 60/100 will be short-listed. At the end of the process, the Selection published on the Scuola s website. IOM will conduct its own selection based on internal criteria. At the end of the process, IOM will transmit to the Scuola its own list of admitted and reserve students. The results of the selections will be timely notified to applicants by email. Commission will prepare the list of admitted and reserve students which will be ART. 7 Tuition Fee The Course fee is 1.650,00 EUR and includes attendance costs, tutorship, reference material, lunch/dinner at the canteen of the Scuola Sant Anna for the entire length of the course, access to the library of the Scuola, and free access to the wireless connection within the Scuola premises. Accommodation is facilitated by the Scuola Superiore Sant Anna but covered by the participants. Any other expenses such as visa and travel costs, etc. - are to be covered by the participants. Depending on financial availabilities, a limited number of scholarships may be made available towards meeting the tuition fee, or travelling, or living expenses in Pisa. If available, said contributions will be awarded by the abovementioned Commission whose decision will be final, taking into consideration the curriculum and motivation of the candidate, the principles of geographical diversity and gender balance, and according to the specific instructions received by the funding institutions. Preference will be given to non OECD citizens. Admitted applicants who wish to attend the admission letter. Admitted students who are citizens of non-eu countries residing outside Italy, as soon as they receive notification of admission, shall contact the competent Italian Embassy or consular authorities in their country of residence in order to apply for a short-term visa for study purposes. Participants who wish to obtain a maximum of 5 academic credits are expected to take a multiple choice test related to the attended curriculum. Former participants admitted to attend the specialized module of the Migration curriculum and attending at least 80% of it will receive a certificate of attendance. They will be given as well the possibility to achieve a maximum of 2 academic credits by taking an ad hoc multiple choice test. ART. 10 Personal Data In accordance with Italian Legislative Decree no. 196 30/06/2003 (Personal Data Protection Code), please note that the personal details collected by Scuola Superiore Sant Anna, the holder of such data processing, will be used solely for the purposes pertaining to the management of this Course, in accordance with the applicable regulations. Scuola Superiore Sant Anna General Director shall be responsible for such data processing. Anyone concerned can assert the rights under art. 7 of the Italian Legislative Decree 196/2003 with the Scuola Superiore Sant Anna.
