COMMANDERS REPORT Well, another Squadron year is almost over and it has been another successful year for our program with a few changes along the way.congratulations and many thanks to all the volunteers who assisted with the various programs and events and to all of our current, Bridge members who put this all together. This year, we taught the brand new course Electronic Charting which adds to the basic GPS course by illustrating the use of charts on screens. The Boating and Weather Courses were successfully run in the fall and BoatPro, Navigating with GPS and Maritime Radio are slotted for the spring. Currently, we have the Celestial Navigation Course underway which is probably the most challenging course that is offered and teaches the use of the Sextant for taking sights used for locating oneself in the days prior to electronics and GPS systems. In addition, we held a very successful SAFE BOATING DAY at Maitland Marina which was a success under the leadership of Gord Grant. This will be carried on as an annual tradition. Our Squadron also participated with the Bayfield River Valley Trail Association through the able leadership of Bob and Dawn Merriman to assist in creating a walking trail in the area and for the first time, participated in the Goderich Santa Claus Parade. Currently we are working on filling up our slate with additional volunteers for the next Squadron Year and can always use more assistance with events and on the Bridge. Please email me or Jos Rommens or Dean Nisbett if you would like to have fun with the volunteers. (Please add email addresses) Regards, Chris Thatcher, Cdr. In Memoriam We sadly announce that P/Cdr Bill Linfield, S passed away on Monday February 25, 2008 during a gallant battle with prostate cancer. Bill had served the Goderich Squadron in many capacities; as Commander in 1989-90, as PCOC from 2002 2005 and most recently as Historical. He was an effective instructor to the benefit of many students - recently for Weather and BoatPro courses. Many active members of the squadron were initially recruited by Bill. In 2005 he was awarded life membership status by achieving 20 merit marks. Bill pursued many other interests, especially his enthusiasm for banjo playing and actively supporting conservation through the Ausable-Bayfield Conservation authority. Bill always made sure that things were done correctly and could be counted on to ask the necessary questions. Bill also readily volunteered to do the extra things like staff information displays and host events with Linda in their stone home. Around the Goderich Squadron we will miss him in many ways; his guidance, his willingness to help, his personal directions to gunk holes, and his enthusiasm for a good cause. Our sympathies are extended to Linda and the family.

February 04, 2008 CANADIAN POWER AND SAIL SQUADRONS WESTERN ONTARIO DISTRICT Notice of the District Annual General Meeting Notice is hereby given that the Annual General Conference of Western Ontario District of the Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons/Escadrilles canadienne de plaisance will be held at: For the purpose of Altadore Quality Hotel & Suites Convention Centre 580 Bruin Boulevard, Woodstock, Ontario Saturday, April 26, 2008 at 1400 1. Considering and, if thought fit, approving the Resolution set forth in Schedule A of this Notice. 2. Receiving a report from the s and Committees of this District. 3. Receiving the Audited Report of the District Treasurer on the financial position of this District. 4. Electing to office those members whose names and addresses appear in the report of the District Nominating Committee annexed to and forming part of this Notice of Meeting. 5. Appointing an Internal Audit Review Committee for the District Year 2008-2009. 6. Considering such other business as may be properly brought before the Annual District Conference Dave Corke, AP Secretary, Western Ontario District. Schedule A BE IT RESOLVED THAT Article 9.15.1 of the Western Ontario District Regulations be repealed: "The District Nominating Committee shall consist of three members, being the Immediate Past District Commander, the Past District Commander once removed, and the Past District Commander twice removed, all of whom shall hold their position by virtue of their office and will not require election or appointment. The Chairman of the Committee shall be the Past District Commander twice removed." And the following is to be enacted: "The District Nominating Committee shall consist of 3 members, being the District Commander, the immediate Past District Commander and the Past District Commander once removed, all of whom shall hold their positions by virtue of their office and will not require election or appointment. The Chairman of the Committee shall be the immediate Past District Commander." Rationale: This will bring our Regulations in line with the Model District Regulations and will be a more practical Committee. The current D/C and immediate Past have more working knowledge of potential candidates than a P/D/C twice removed. Note: Members eligible for election as District s are set out in Article 12 of the District Regulations, Section 12.1 which reads as follows: "No member of this District shall be eligible for election as provided in Section 11.6.1 of these Regulations at any Annual District Conference unless nominated by the District Nominating Committee or by a petition in writing signed by not less than five members of this District who shall confirm the consent of their nominee to such nomination. All such nominations: a) by the District Nominating Committee shall be filed with the District Secretary at least four weeks prior to the date of the meeting at which such election shall take place: b) by petition shall be filed with the District Secretary not less than two days prior to the date of the meeting at which such election shall take place. "
