ACCESS PCI PUBLICATIONS PCI publishes three magazines: the award-winning PCI Journal, Ascent, and ASPIRE. Each is targeted to a specific audience of decision makers who drive the marketplace. PCI Journal is a bimonthly publication which includes peer-reviewed papers that report on the latest research on the analysis, design, materials, construction, and repair of precast/prestressed concrete structures and pavements. Many of these papers will later inform the design handbooks and building codes used in our industry. PCI Journal is a must-have for engineers, academics, regulators, and other industry stakeholders. PCI members receive complimentary subscriptions to PCI Journal. Ascent magazine is a quarterly publication of the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute and is a great resource for architects and other stakeholders in the buildings industry. Each issue features in-depth case studies highlighting industry trends and innovative design, comprehensive articles on specific design challenges from industry experts, and special features on sustainability. PCI members receive complimentary subscriptions to Ascent. ASPIRE TM, The Concrete Bridge Magazine, has one true focus: to bring practical and cutting-edge knowledge (design ideas, practical solutions, lessons learned) to the designers, specifiers, and owners of concrete bridges. This highly rated quarterly publication is produced by PCI in cooperation with some of the associations of the National Concrete Bridge Council (NCBC). PCI members are eligible to receive a complimentary subscription to ASPIRE (upon request). The PCI Bookstore is the source for the precast/prestressed concrete industry for purchasing all technical publications (manuals, state-of-the-art guides, CDs, epubs, and more) published by PCI. Visit the bookstore online at www.pciorg/bookstore. 7

This members-only benefit creates a yearly cohort of 12 members who spend a year working together for their own betterment and that of the entire industry. The program lauds an industry retention rate of more than 90%. 9

PCI EDUCATION PROGRAMS MAKE A DIFFERENCE. We have used lunch-and-learns and webinars to make many great contacts with potential customers. PCI HELPS US GET OUR FOOT IN THE DOOR. Corey Greika, Coreslab Indianapolis Student Education Did you know PCI impacts the prestressed concrete curricula at universities all across the country? PCI s Prestressed-in-a-Box program offers standard presentations that professors can use to incorporate prestressed concrete topics into their current programs, or create entire courses dedicated to prestressed concrete. In addition, PCI offers the Engineering Student Competition (www.pci. org/bigbeam) and encourages university student teams to cooperate with local prestressed concrete producers to cast and test a prestressed beam. If you have questions about any of the education benefits of your membership, please e-mail us at education@pci.org. * PCI is a registered provider with the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) to provide Professional Development Hours to engineers in all 50 states, and with The American Institute of Architects (AIA) to provide Learning Units to architects. Some programs carry additional credentials, such as the Continuing Education credit from the U.S. Green Building Council Inc. (USGBC) and the International Code Council (ICC). 10

ACCESS TECHNICAL RESOURCES AND SUPPORT Industry Representation and Influence PCI staff, code consultants, and member volunteers represent the interests of the precast concrete industry in more than 30 codes, standards, and professional organizations, and in many cases, take leadership roles. Of particular note is the activity in the American Concrete Institute (ACI) for concrete structural design, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) for design loads, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) for transportation structures, and the International Code Council (ICC) for general building code provisions. Long-standing effort in these arenas has established technical credibility and influence for the benefit of the industry. Knowledge Generation PCI is unique in the world of associations in that the membership combines engineering professionals with operational expertise. Through the work of more than 60 councils, committees, and subcommittees, a Body of Knowledge has been developed that has great technical depth and practical application. Participation in these groups provides an opportunity to be at the leading edge of technical developments while also contributing to further advancement of the Body of Knowledge. Technical Resources In 2014, PCI was accredited as a Standards Developer by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). This allows PCI technical documents that go through a consensus approval process to be registered as American National Standards, adding to the credibility of documents that are already considered industry standards for precast concrete structures and systems. PCI technical resources include manuals, guidelines, recommended practices, ASPIRE, and PCI Journal. These publications are routinely referenced for specifying, designing, building, and inspecting precast concrete building and transportation structures. 11

PCI PROVIDES A LARGE RESOURCE OF PEOPLE with an enormous amount of knowledge and experience THAT I AM ABLE TO TAP INTO. Julie Buchanan Buchanan Engineering Group LLC PCI MEMBERS HAVE ACCESS TO TECHNICAL SUPPORT to help solve problems, gather information, interpret and understand codes and standards, and CONNECT TO A WORLD OF RESOURCES. Technical Support for PCI Members The PCI technical staff comes from the industry and design communities. Inquiries from members, members customers, and potential customers are handled on a daily basis. In addition to staff, industry expert members and technical committees are called upon to handle thousands of inquiries every year. Research & Development PCI has invested millions of dollars and thousands of work hours into practical, solution-based research. This has produced results ranging from improved designs for greater efficiency and lower cost to major market-changing breakthroughs, such as improvements in seismic design. PCI R&D efforts have helped develop precast design and technology into its current state. Research reports are available on the PCI website and most projects result in summary papers published in PCI Journal. PCI has gained substantial backing from outside sources such as the National Science Foundation (NSF), Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), and private foundations, greatly multiplying and leveraging the money invested by PCI members. No other industry organization has such a program in place. 12

BELONG NETWORK One of the most vital activities of any organization is networking. PCI s membership includes almost every major precast concrete producer, erector, supplier, and recognized professional individual associated with the precast concrete structures industry. Through our annual convention and membership conference, regional meetings, educational seminars, and group activities, PCI members enjoy unparalleled networking opportunities with their industry peers, as well as with top industry leaders, influential government officials, and mainstream customers. PCI has served as the incubator for several joint ventures and partnerships that are reshaping the industry. PCI members have established some of their most treasured personal and business relationships through PCI activities. PCI Members-Only Events Many PCI events, such as the PCI Committee Days and Membership Conference, Summer Conference, Zone Meetings, and the CEO Summit are open to members only. For a complete list of PCI events, visit the calendar page of the website, www.pci.org/ News_And_Events/Calendar. 13

BELONG GET INVOLVED PCI has more than 60 volunteer groups, which include councils, committee, subcommittees, and task groups. There is likely a group (or a few) to fit your particular interests. These groups develop the Body of Knowledge, oversee institute programs, and generate ideas for industry implementation. There are many benefits to getting involved on an industry committee. Overwhelmingly, those involved identify a several-fold return on their time investment and report this to be an important, valuable, and rewarding experience. Getting involved provides these opportunities: Gain knowledge from and build relationships with professionals working in the industry and related fields Personal and career growth Learn where the industry is going and the challenges it faces from a global viewpoint Discuss common industry problems and find solutions that directly affect industry and industry-related businesses Leadership development of the employees of PCI members in all membership categories as well as academic institutions Provide input and influence in the development of future guides, standards, codes, and other PCI publications A complete list of PCI s committees and councils can be found on the PCI website under Committee Central. Only PCI members are eligible to participate on a committee/council. A brief description of each type of group is included in the infographic on the following page. 17

Transportation Activities Council (TrAC) COUNCILS Business Performance Council (BPC) Technical Activities Council (TAC) COMMITTEES are formal groups created by councils, the PCI Executive Committee, or the PCI Board of Directors. Committees address specific topics within an area of interest or carry out tasks assigned by a council. SUBCOMMITTEES are semiformal groups created by committees to further subdivide an area of interest to facilitate focus on a specific component of that area. Research & Development Council (R&D) Quality Activities Council (QAC) COUNCILS Educational Activities Council (EAC) Marketing Council (MKT) TASK GROUPS are information groups created to accomplish a specific task. This task may or may not be part of a bigger project. Typically, a task group serves until its assigned task is completed. COUNCILS: Councils are formal groups created by the PCI Board of Directors to address broad-based areas of interest where subordinate committee(s) either exist or may be created in the future. 18

CONNECT ATTEND The PCI Convention and National Bridge Conference is PCI s largest event and is open to both members and nonmembers. The PCI Convention and National Bridge Conference provides an opportunity for networking, learning about new products, gaining continuing education, and attending committee meetings. All members are encouraged to attend. The PCI Committee Days and Membership Conference is an annual meeting that draws nearly 400 committee members and those interested in committee work to discuss current initiatives within the institute. Here, much of the Body of Knowledge for precast concrete is developed. Committee Days is only open to members and provides a great opportunity to network and collaborate with others in the industry. At the PCI Summer Conference, select committees and the PCI Board of Directors meet to discuss various issues. This is a members-only event. The PCI Zone Meetings are also members-only events. The meetings include a reception, presentation, meeting, and often social events. Visit the PCI event calendar for more details about upcoming events. If you have questions about any of PCI's events, please e-mail us at events@pci.org. 19

Some of my best and most valued relationships have come from PCI networking. BEING A MEMBER OF PCI HAS CHANGED MY LIFE. Harry Gleich Metromont PCI CONVENTIONS ENABLE ME TO LEARN SO MANY NEW THINGS. Christopher Williams Purdue University I GET TO SEE ALL the people I don t usually get to see at convention: VENDORS, PRODUCER CLIENTS, AND POTENTIAL CLIENTS. Ned Cleland Blue Ridge Design Inc. THIS CONVENTION PROVIDES AN OPPORTUNITY FOR practicing engineers, code writers, academia, and industry professionals to collaborate on making sound engineering specifications, balancing safety and pragmatic means and methods of construction, while keeping precast products economically viable. CONNECT MARKETING PCI, in collaboration with PCI Regions, executes several powerful marketing activities and programs to promote PCI certified precast concrete and, ultimately, members products and services. PCI conducts market research, identifies opportunities and threats, sets strategic directions, raises general awareness of the benefits of precast concrete, develops marketing resources, and measures overall performance. PCI members gain access to these market reports and information, which helps them set the direction of their own businesses. PCI and PCI Regions also strive to connect projects and customers to PCI members. This includes providing unique opportunities for PCI members to promote and differentiate themselves. Awareness PCI conducts marketing activities to raise awareness of the benefits of precast concrete, such as national marketing and advertising campaigns; participating in national tradeshows; executing an industry public relations program; providing targeted continuing education programs; publishing the quarterly Ascent magazine, which is distributed to more than 30,000 architects, owners, and key decision makers; publishing the quarterly ASPIRE magazine, which reaches approximately 25,000 transportation engineers and officials; developing strategic relationships with target industry organizations and audiences; and other activities. Marketing Resources PCI and PCI Regions develop marketing and promotional resources, such as flash drives, brochures, videos, presentations, promotional kits, and more to increase the awareness of the attributes of precast concrete in the marketplace. Only PCI members have access to PCI marketing resources and information, which can be used to help promote their companies and the precast concrete industry. 21

A POWERFUL BRAND One of the most powerful benefits of being a member of PCI is the PCI brand. PCI is recognized worldwide as the technical institute for the precast concrete structures industry. The PCI brand is associated with quality, technical excellence, competence, integrity, confidence, and leadership. PCI members share this identity and brand equity. As a result, many owners, contractors, and specifiers prefer to do business with PCI members. PCI members increase their stature in the minds of their customers just by being members. THE POWER OF THE PCI BRAND is intangible, but very real. Being involved with PCI helps differentiate me in the eyes of my customers.
