ACCESS COMMUNICATIONS As a member of PCI, you have access to the latest industry and institute news and events via the PCI website, My PCI Update newsletter, department e-newsletters, and subscriptions to the esteemed PCI Journal and Ascent magazine. My PCI Update: My PCI Update is a monthly electronic newsletter. It includes news on what is going on within the institute, as well as member information about other events and opportunities. PCI Member Newsletters: PCI sends out periodic electronic member newsletters that provide in-depth details about what is going on in specific areas of the institute and industry. ACCESS PCI PUBLICATIONS PCI publishes three magazines: the award-winning PCI Journal, Ascent, and ASPIRE. Each is targeted to a specific audience of decision makers who drive the marketplace. PCI Journal is a bimonthly publication which includes peer-reviewed papers that report on the latest research on the analysis, design, materials, construction, and repair of precast/prestressed concrete structures and pavements. Many of these papers will later inform the design handbooks and building codes used in our industry. PCI Journal is a must-have for engineers, academics, regulators, and other industry stakeholders. PCI members receive complimentary subscriptions to PCI Journal. Ascent magazine is a quarterly publication of the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute and is a great resource for architects and other stakeholders in the buildings industry. Each issue features in-depth case studies highlighting industry trends and innovative design, comprehensive articles on specific design challenges from industry experts, and special features on sustainability. PCI members receive complimentary subscriptions to Ascent. ASPIRE TM, The Concrete Bridge Magazine, has one true focus: to bring practical and cutting-edge knowledge (design ideas, practical solutions, lessons learned) to the designers, specifiers, and owners of concrete bridges. This highly rated quarterly publication is produced by PCI in cooperation with some of the associations of the National Concrete Bridge Council (NCBC). PCI EDUCATION PROGRAMS MAKE A DIFFERENCE. We have used lunch-and-learns and webinars to make many great contacts with potential customers. PCI HELPS US GET OUR FOOT IN THE DOOR. PCI s Prestressed-in-a-Box program offers standard presentations that professors can use to incorporate prestressed concrete topics into their current programs, or create entire courses dedicated to prestressed concrete. In addition, PCI offers the Engineering Student Competition (www.pci. org/bigbeam) and encourages university student teams to cooperate with local prestressed concrete producers to cast and test a prestressed beam. ACCESS TECHNICAL RESOURCES AND SUPPORT Industry Representation and Influence PCI staff, code consultants, and member volunteers represent the interests of the precast concrete industry in more than 30 codes, standards, and professional organizations, and in many cases, take leadership roles. Of particular note is the activity in the American Concrete Institute (ACI) for concrete structural design, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) for design loads, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) for transportation structures, and the International Code Council (ICC) for general building code provisions. Long-standing effort in these arenas has established technical credibility and influence for the benefit of the industry. Knowledge Generation PCI is unique in the world of associations in that the membership combines engineering professionals with operational expertise. Through the work of more than 60 councils, committees, and subcommittees, a Body of Knowledge has been developed that has great technical depth and practical application. Participation in these groups provides an opportunity to be at the leading edge of technical developments while also contributing to further advancement of the Body of Knowledge. Technical Resources In 2014, PCI was accredited as a Standards Developer by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). This allows PCI technical documents that go through a consensus approval process to be registered as American National Standards, adding to the credibility of documents that are already considered industry standards for precast concrete structures and systems. PCI technical resources include manuals, guidelines, recommended practices, ASPIRE, and PCI Journal. These publications are routinely referenced for specifying, designing, building, and inspecting precast concrete building and transportation structures. 11

Technical Support for PCI Members The PCI technical staff comes from the industry and design communities. Inquiries from members, members customers, and potential customers are handled on a daily basis. In addition to staff, industry expert members and technical committees are called upon to handle thousands of inquiries every year. Research & Development PCI has invested millions of dollars and thousands of work hours into practical, solution-based research. This has produced results ranging from improved designs for greater efficiency and lower cost to major market-changing breakthroughs, such as improvements in seismic design. PCI R&D efforts have helped develop precast design and technology into its current state. Research reports are available on the PCI website and most projects result in summary papers published in PCI Journal. PCI has gained substantial backing from outside sources such as the National Science Foundation (NSF), Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), and private foundations, greatly multiplying and leveraging the money invested by PCI members. No other industry organization has such a program in place. 12
BELONG NETWORK One of the most vital activities of any organization is networking. PCI s membership includes almost every major precast concrete producer, erector, supplier, and recognized professional individual associated with the precast concrete structures industry. Through our annual convention and membership conference, regional meetings, educational seminars, and group activities, PCI members enjoy unparalleled networking opportunities with their industry peers, as well as with top industry leaders, influential government officials, and mainstream customers. PCI has served as the incubator for several joint ventures and partnerships that are reshaping the industry. PCI members have established some of their most treasured personal and business relationships through PCI activities. BELONG PCI REGIONS PCI Regions are an integral part of PCI. There are currently 12 PCI Regions that serve as area hubs for implementing marketing programs, conducting face-to-face continuing education opportunities, providing connections between clients and precast producers for project design assistance, supplying PCI resources to the marketplace, and supporting the education of university professors and students in precast concrete. BELONG GET INVOLVED PCI has more than 60 volunteer groups, which include councils, committee, subcommittees, and task groups. There is likely a group (or a few) to fit your particular interests. These groups develop the Body of Knowledge, oversee institute programs, and generate ideas for industry implementation. There are many benefits to getting involved on an industry committee. Overwhelmingly, those involved identify a several-fold return on their time investment and report this to be an important, valuable, and rewarding experience. Getting involved provides these opportunities: Gain knowledge from and build relationships with professionals working in the industry and related fields Personal and career growth Learn where the industry is going and the challenges it faces from a global viewpoint Discuss common industry problems and find solutions that directly affect industry and industry-related businesses Leadership development of the employees of PCI members in all membership categories as well as academic institutions Provide input and influence in the development of future guides, standards, codes, and other PCI publications A complete list of PCI s committees and councils can be found on the PCI website under Committee Central. Transportation Activities Council (TrAC) COUNCILS Business Performance Council (BPC) Technical Activities Council (TAC) COMMITTEES are formal groups created by councils, the PCI Executive Committee, or the PCI Board of Directors. Committees address specific topics within an area of interest or carry out tasks assigned by a council. SUBCOMMITTEES are semiformal groups created by committees to further subdivide an area of interest to facilitate focus on a specific component of that area. Research & Development Council (R&D) Quality Activities Council (QAC) COUNCILS Educational Activities Council (EAC) Marketing Council (MKT) TASK GROUPS are information groups created to accomplish a specific task. This task may or may not be part of a bigger project. Typically, a task group serves until its assigned task is completed. COUNCILS: Councils are formal groups created by the PCI Board of Directors to address broad-based areas of interest where subordinate committee(s) either exist or may be created in the future. 18
CONNECT ATTEND The PCI Convention and National Bridge Conference is PCI s largest event and is open to both members and nonmembers. The PCI Convention and National Bridge Conference provides an opportunity for networking, learning about new products, gaining continuing education, and attending committee meetings. All members are encouraged to attend. The PCI Committee Days and Membership Conference is an annual meeting that draws nearly 400 committee members and those interested in committee work to discuss current initiatives within the institute. Here, much of the Body of Knowledge for precast concrete is developed. Committee Days is only open to members and provides a great opportunity to network and collaborate with others in the industry. At the PCI Summer Conference, select committees and the PCI Board of Directors meet to discuss various issues. This is a members-only event. The PCI Zone Meetings are also members-only events. CONNECT MARKETING PCI, in collaboration with PCI Regions, executes several powerful marketing activities and programs to promote PCI certified precast concrete and, ultimately, members products and services. PCI conducts market research, identifies opportunities and threats, sets strategic directions, raises general awareness of the benefits of precast concrete, develops marketing resources, and measures overall performance. PCI members gain access to these market reports and information, which helps them set the direction of their own businesses. PCI and PCI Regions also strive to connect projects and customers to PCI members. This includes providing unique opportunities for PCI members to promote and differentiate themselves. Awareness PCI conducts marketing activities to raise awareness of the benefits of precast concrete, such as national marketing and advertising campaigns; participating in national tradeshows; executing an industry public relations program; providing targeted continuing education programs; publishing the quarterly Ascent magazine, which is distributed to more than 30,000 architects, owners, and key decision makers; publishing the quarterly ASPIRE magazine, which reaches approximately 25,000 transportation engineers and officials; developing strategic relationships with target industry organizations and audiences; and other activities. Marketing Resources PCI and PCI Regions develop marketing and promotional resources, such as flash drives, brochures, videos, presentations, promotional kits, and more to increase the awareness of the attributes of precast concrete in the marketplace. Only PCI members have access to PCI marketing resources and information, which can be used to help promote their companies and the precast concrete industry. 21
