1 of 6 4/6/2017 1:16 PM GETTYSBURG COLLEGE S MONTHLY E-NEWSLETTER gettysburg.edu Make a Gift Vol. XVII, No. 8 - April 2017 Founders Day Gettysburg College s 185th birthday is Friday, April 7. Look for an email from President Riggs that day to learn how you can take part in the celebration; in the meantime, start planning your best Orange & Blue attire for the occasion! Commencement Weekend is May 20-21. A highlight on May 20 is Spring Honors Day at 1 p.m. in the Chapel, where Carol Hirst Clark 61, John Hohnecker 81, Inga Holl Musselman '82 and Robert Ortenzio 79 will be presented with Distinguished Alumni Awards. Graduation ceremonies begin at 11 a.m. Sunday on the north side of Penn Hall and all are welcome for the outdoor ceremony. Learn more. Alumni College and Reunion Weekend are just two months away, and you can see the full schedule of events and register online now.the 2s & 7s classes will hold landmark reunions, though all alumni are invited back for the June 1-4 festivities, which begin with Alumni College classes covering a breadth of topics, along with the Orange & Blue Golf Classic, which still has some afternoon flight openings. See the full schedule. Fred Fielding 61 and a class assignment inspired the career of Sira Grant 11, who

2 of 6 4/6/2017 1:16 PM graduated 50 years after he did. How did that happen? Looking for a team to root for in this weekend s Men s NCAA Final Four? How about South Carolina, where Perry Clark 74 is an assistant coach! Tom Boll 74 teaches a course at Syracuse University s Newhouse School of Public Communications entitled Real News, Fake News: Literacy for the Information Age, about which he was recently interviewed. Read the story. John Sanders 00 is a concert promoter living in Chicago and has booked Lady Gaga to play at SpringFest on campus later this month (thanks in part to a Gettysburg sophomore who has a family connection to the NYC-born Gaga).* Pam Iovino 79 was honored at the PA Commission for Women s Female Veterans Day event at Governor Wolf s residence on March 29. She is former Assistant Secretary at the Department of Veterans Affairs and a former Navy Captain. Amy Gibson Wenger 98 will once again honor the memory of her classmate Denise Wilson Schaefer as organizer/director of the 3rd Annual Dee s Dash 5K & Fun Run on Sunday, April 23, in Olney, MD. Learn more. Leah Bower 06, a History and Studio Art double major, was recognized by The National Energy Technology Laboratory with an Excellence in Technology Transfer Award. The award is presented annually by the Federal Laboratory Consortium for Technology Transfer in recognition of outstanding work by laboratory employees in the transfer of technology from federal laboratories to the commercial marketplace. Zach Conway 11 wrote a Q&A piece in Forbes with Joshua Fields Millburn of The Minimalists. Read the interview. The Spring 2017 edition of the Gettysburg Review, the College s award-winning national literary quarterly, is now available. It is the first release of what will be the Review s 30th anniversary volume and features art, fiction, essays and poetry. Purchase a copy or subscribe in print or digital format. To accommodate the building interest in the Inside the Middle East Tour trip, which will be Sept. 8-16, the registration deadline has been extended to May 19. Get more info and register to join fellow Gettysburgians on this unique opportunity that will provide unparalleled, insider access in Israel and the Palestinian Territories. Bryant Terry a James Beard Foundation Leadership Award-winning chef, educator and author will deliver an interactive presentation at The Majestic Theater on Wed., April 4, at 7:30 p.m., entitled Food Justice: At the Intersection of Food, Politics, Poverty, Public Health, and the Environment. In addition, 12 G-burg students will be showcasing their research that correlates to the Gettysburg Cycle Year of Food. How does the Garthwait Leadership Center impact students? Read Brooke Gutschick 17 s story to find out.

3 of 6 4/6/2017 1:16 PM Noah Pompan 18 was one of the winners of the College s Entrepreneurial Fellowships last year. Read about his idea and how he launched his product. To keep up with the ways our alumni, parents and friends communicate and help you stay in better touch with Gettysburg, the division of Development, Alumni & Parent Relations is looking into sending infrequent text messages (perhaps 5-10/year). We hope these messages connect you to Gettysburg in a way that is both convenient and beneficial. If you do not wish to receive text messages, simply email us at text@gettysburg.edu and put stop in the subject line. You also will be able to opt-out at any time after receiving a text. Fenway Park, Wrigley Field, Yankee Stadium, Citizens Bank Park, PNC Park, Camden Yards and Nationals Park will be some of the locations for Gettysburg events this spring/summer, as once again G-burg Clubs have organized outings at Major League and minor league baseball games. The Philly event is hosted by Denny Shupe P 11. Learn more and register. Nearly 600 Class of 2017 students will graduate on May 21, and many are busily seeking their first job. To give them and other Gettysburgians an opportunity to become an asset at your workplace, post job openings through the College s GettysburgWorks online site. Thanks! See what resources are available to alumni through the College s Center for Career Development, including online assessment tools, resume and cover-letterwriting tips, job openings and more. Late in 2016, several generous donors reached a very special milestone in their lifetime support of Gettysburg College, each surpassing the $1 million mark in donations. Among them are Jere E. 65 and Angela Gravino 64 Estes who support their alma mater through a combination of outright contributions and planned gifts, including charitable gift annuities. Later this spring, they will be among the contributors whose names will be engraved onto our Benefactors Wall. Visit our website to learn more about gift and estate planning. See the latest news, learn about the five priorities of the Campaign, and see how you can make a difference ALL gifts count and matter! The total goal is $150 million, and thus far with 14 months remaining more than $130 million has been raised to benefit current and future Gettysburg students.
