Hope to see you at Stanford on March 11. The Medea Project: Theater for Incarcerated Women/HIV Crcle by Kmberly Paton, CCA North Board Member O n December 5 th I attended a performance at San Francsco State Unversty by The Medea Project: Theater for Incarcerated Women/HIV Crcle. Over the last year Dr. Alexandra Pappas has been workng wth the women of the Medea Project, and she s credted wth brngng ths amazng experence to our campus. The drector, Rhodessa Jones, works wth the women of The Medea Project to explore how an arts-based approach can help reduce the numbers of women returnng to jal and can ad women lvng wth dagnoses of HIV/AIDS. The performance was an expresson of each woman s experences wth HIV, abuse, ncarceraton, addcton, judgment, solaton, self-loathng, and eventually Cast members of the Medea Project acceptance, healng, and freedom through adaptons of Greco-Roman mythology lke Pandora, Daphne, and Medea. I watched the women dance, chant, yell, stomp ther feet, and ultmately heal themselves and the audence through ther performance of Classcal myths made panfully relatable to the experences of so many women n our world. The performance symbolzed much for me, but two takeaways that I wll share are nspraton and encouragement. I was nspred by ther grt and honesty. I both shared some of ther experences and could not magne lvng others. I thought about how much courage t takes for humans to share any level of emoton wth other humans, especally n our technologcally drven world n whch lfe-alterng conversatons often take place va text message. I was nspred by ther ablty to share ther most raw and frghtenng emotons wth so many strangers. I 5

was encouraged by ther defense of Classcs, a defense lke nothng I have seen before. I was encouraged when I heard all of the women, who have had no formal tranng n Classcs, share what I am studyng n such an approachable and relatable way. Classcs, and all of the Humantes, constantly calls for letters behnd your name to be able to convncngly explan the mportance of a dscplne, and these women convnced me of the value of Classcs better than any traned Classcst ever has. I gve my grattude to The Medea Project for the healng power of ther work and for ther defense of Classcs, ntentonal or not. The CCA North Fall 2016 Conference by Rchard Martn, CCA North Presdent T he CCA-N Autumn conference, held October 1, 2016 at Stanford Unversty, lved up n every way to ts ttle: Classcs--Rght Now! Four fne talks took the enthusastc audence from the latest recepton of the mythc Amazons to contemporary war epsodes rvalng the Ilad, and provded up-to-the mnute reports on the usefulness of cogntve studes and computer-asssted annotaton for teachng our felds. All told, the ancent past never sounded more relevant. smlartes centered on what seems an nnate human flaw, the tendency to turn the Other (enemy, captve, refugee, or smple outsder) nto targets for the worst abuse. Whether Homerc poetry offered a way out of such thnkng alongsde representng ts brutalty remans an open queston. Turnng to the challenges of teachng the Classcal languages n contemporary condtons, Scott Roos (Stuart Hall and Convent School) presented the very latest fndngs connectng Cognton Theory and the Latn Classroom. The presentaton started by lookng at practcal applcatons from Human Cogntve Archtecture and Cogntve Load Theory. He then shared vsual organzers and concept maps wth examples that he had created for use wth hs students, endng wth suggestons on how to encourage the proven learnng ad of self-explanaton by usng prompts. Sarah Harrell (Bentley School) gave a captvatng account of Wonder Woman: An Amazon for the 21st Century. Explorng the endurng fascnaton of the Amazon myth, and ts latest avatars, Sarah ranged over the orgns of Wonder Woman n the suffragette movement; reasons for the appeal of the myth n present-day Amercan socety (possbly energzed by the nomnaton of Hllary Clnton); and her own nnovatve hgh-school mn-course that uses these stores to teach crtcal thnkng about ancent Greek culture. A great prep for next June s blockbuster superherone move! Bárbara Alvarez Rodríguez (Stanford Unversty) graphcally llustrated The Many Faces of Volence n a soberng talk that juxtaposed mages from today s toughest conflcts worldwde wth volent scenes or rhetorc from Homerc epc. In ancent and modern nstances, as she ponted out, the most dsturbng Fnally, Stephen Sansom (Stanford Unversty) brought together Kanye and the Scholasts n hs talk on annotaton n the dgtal age. Focusng on three onlne annotaton platforms (Genus.com, Hypothes.s, and Google Docs) and artculatng the pedagogcal and hermeneutc questons they rase, he proceeded to show, among other great tps, how a ste bult orgnally for markng up rap musc lyrcs can be employed for class-based, shared commentary and annotaton of any Classcal text from Kanye to Catullus, as t were. Both Stephen s and Scott s presentatons made the teachers n the room eager to rush out and try these latest advances, whle those by Sarah and Bárbara prompted reflectons on why and how we should ncorporate antquty (even n ts fantastc or depressng aspects) nto our dealngs wth present-day concerns. Our warmest thanks to the speakers and all who helped make ths a thought-provokng meetng. Aequora: Teachng Lteracy wth Latn by Kmberly Paton, CCA North Board Member I n summer 2016 I had the opportunty to lve and work n Rome, Italy for the Padea Insttute for Humanstc Study, a non-proft educatonal organzaton dedcated to promotng the study and apprecaton of the classcal humantes wth a focus on 6

Latn and Ancent Greek languages and lteratures. Another Classcs graduate student, a Latn teacher/textbook author, and I were tasked wth wrtng a non-tradtonal Latn textbook, now ttled Aequora: Teachng Lteracy wth Latn, targeted toward elementary and mddle school students n the Unted States. The goal of the textbook s to use Latn grammar and vocabulary as a tool for mprovng Englsh lteracy whle also ntroducng students to Greek and Roman culture, hstory, and mythology. We researched and syntheszed all of the case studes on Latn and lteracy conducted n the Unted States from the 1970s to today. We dug up the actual Latn textbooks of Rudolph Mascantono, the poneer of studes on Latn and lteracy n the 1970s, and we set out to wrte a textbook suted for today s students wth hs work as our foundaton. I created several chapters on Roman hstory and culture, ncludng lessons on the Roman famly, food n Ancent Rome, gladators, aqueducts, and the Roman army. My colleagues created engagng grammar lessons on parts of speech and nteractve readngs of Greek and Roman mythology. Together we created exercses connectng Latn words to Englsh dervatves and Latn parts of speech to Englsh parts of speech, and a seres of games to soldfy students understandng of the vocabulary and grammar. Along wth the textbook we also created a teacher s manual, whch gudes both experenced Latnsts and teachers wth lttle to no Latn experence through the currculum. An Englsh lteracy specalst collaborated wth us on dentfyng the Common Core standards that our textbook met and generated pre- and post-tests, whch gauge the mprovement of the students Englsh lteracy. Most recently, one of Padea s multtalented Dgtal Humantes Interns also completed a supplemental Spansh secton for each lesson to make the textbook even more benefcal to students whose frst language s Spansh. Aequora, Padea s afterschool Latn program and the orgn of the textbook s ttle, has already mplemented the currculum n ts stes spannng all along the East Coast and the South. Latn s a brdge not only between languages, but also between socetes, space, and tme. Aequora: Teachng Lteracy wth Latn s just one of the ways that Padea s workng to brdge the wdenng gap between Classcs and the modern world, and t s a prvlege to be surrounded by such lkemnded and open-mnded Classcsts, and to be able to help them acheve ths goal. CJCL State Conventon 2017 by Dobbe Vasquez, CCA North Secretary, CJCL Open Certamen Char L ookng for somethng beyond the classroom for your Latn classes?
